Shubho Mahalaya: Durga Puja Celebrations Bring Festivities

The India Saga Saga |

People are bracing up for the festivities with prayers that the Goddess Durga would slay the evil and lift the gloom around. Beautiful pandals decked with diverse designs and themes have come up in all corners of West Bengal and Bihar, besides other states.

Bengalis, known for the Durga Pujo festivities and accompanying feasts are preparing pandals in Kolkata in grand traditions even while the mood appears somewhat dampened due to the Covid pandemic.

The much-awaited and auspicious festival of Durga Puja is about to begin from October 22, 2020. The biggest festival of Bengalis across the globe coincides with 9-day long Navratri festivity which is dedicated to Maa Durga and her different avatars for each day of the Navratra.

Celebrations this year are low-key because of the novel coronavirus outbreak, which has affected people worldwide. Social distancing, wearing masks, gloves and proper sanitisation are the need of the hour to keep the virus at bay. State governments on their part have issued specific guidelines for Durga Puja, Navratri and Ram Lila festivals.

The five-day festival of Durga Puja usually begins six days after Mahalya, but this year it is different due to mala mass-lunar month having two moons. This year Mahalya, which is the beginning of the Devi Paksha and end of the Pitru Paksha, took place on September 17 and Durga Puja starts from October 22.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the Durga Puja celebrations in Bengal as he inaugurates puja pandals in Kolkata via video conferencing today, while the BJP has made preparations to broadcast his greetings message at all the polling booths. The state goes to polls next year.

“Sisters and brothers of West Bengal, tomorrow, on the auspicious day of Maa Durga Pujo’s Maha Sashti, I would join the divine celebrations via video conferencing and shall also be extending my greetings to everyone,”. PM Narendra Modi tweeted on Wednesday.

While Swarup Prasad Ghosh kick-starts celebrations, Dona Ganguly will perform. Summit and Souren will join the event and thereafter Babul Supriyo will be presenting Rabindra Sangeet. PM’s speech will begin at noon.

The BJP Bengal unit in-charge Kailash Vijayvarghiye said, “Durga Puja is the essence of Bengal. People have instilled their faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party in Lok Sabha Elections. We are acknowledging the People’s mandate and what better occasion than seeking blessings of Maa Durga also.”

India’s Brahmos Hits Target With Perfection

The India Saga Saga |

BrahMos is India’s cutting edge missile system, which achieved another milestone after it hit the target with perfection on Monday in a test executed off the coast of Odisha.

The Stand-off Anti-tank (SANT) missile took off in a perfect trajectory off the coast of Odisha on Monday to hit the pre-determined target, marking the successful completion of the test, sources said.

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing the BrahMos missile system for the Indian Air Force (IAF). It will have both ‘Lock-on after Launch and Lock-on Before Launch’ capability, the sources informed. Equipped with an advanced nose-mounted seeker, the missile can destroy targets 15km to 20km away.

“While the earlier version of the missile has a strike range of about eight km, the upgraded variant with infrared imaging seeker can cover at least double the distance. One more trial of the missile has been planned on Tuesday. A series of successful tests would pave the way for its induction and serial production,” a defence official said.

The IAF has congratulated the DRDO on the successful test-firing of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired from the Indian Navy’s indigenously-built stealth destroyer INS Chennai, hitting a target in the Arabian Sea, the DRDO said in a statement.

This was the 11th missile test-fired by India within one and a half month. This test has come in the wake of twin successes of ‘Laser-Guided Anti Tank Guided Missile (ATGM)’ from KK ranges at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra on September 22 and October 1.

India Bags Worst Ranking In Global Hunger Index at 94

The India Saga Saga |

The Global Hunger Index 2020 has ranked India at 94 among 107 countries in terms of hunger. India continues to be in the severe hunger category. The study revealed that around 14 percent of India’s population is undernourished. The disappointing ranking has come despite the National Food Security Act.

Last year, India’s GHI rank was 102 out of 117 countries. South Asia and Africa South of the Sahara have the worst hunger conditions among global regions, the GHI reported.

The GHI is a tool designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger at the global, regional, and national levels. Data from the United Nations and other multilateral agencies are used for the calculation. The GHI score is calculated on four indicators – undernourishment, child wasting, the share of children under the age of five, who are wasted with low weight for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition, and child mortality- the mortality rate of children under the age of five.

India ranks lower than most of its South Asian neighbours – Pakistan(88), Nepal (73), Bangladesh (75), Sri Lanka (64), and Myanmar (78) and only Afghanistan fares worse, at the 99th place.

Shweta Khandelwal, the head of Nutrition Research and Additional Professor at Public Health Foundation of India, said the country has one of the most impressive portfolios of programmes and policies in nutrition in the books.

“Research shows that our top-down approach, poor implementation processes, lack of effective monitoring and siloed approaches in tackling malnutrition often result in poor nutrition indices. We must integrate actions to make public health and nutrition a priority across each sector”. She further told PTI.

It must also be stated that India is implementing a national nutrition plan, with focus on 115 aspirational districts, which are at the bottom of the pyramid of the social health indicators.

Kejriwal launches “Red Light On, Gadi Off ” campaign to curb air pollution

The India Saga Saga |

In the face of rising pollution in the national capital, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched “Red Light On, Gaadi Off” campaign to curb vehicular pollution. The campaign seeks to encourage motorists to switch off vehicles while waiting on traffic signals.

The Delhi Chief Minister said: “It has been seen that we often do not switch off our vehicle engines while waiting at traffic signals. That is called idling. The ‘Red Light On, Gaadi Off’ campaign will aim to bring a behavioural change in that regard. It will help reduce air pollution.”

Around 10 million vehicles are registered in Delhi, said Kejriwal, adding the even if one million of them actively follow the campaign, experts suggest that it can reduce PM10 emissions by 1.5 tonnes a year and PM2.5 emissions by 0.4 tonnes a year.

The air quality of Delhi NCR region is fast deteriorating with the onset of Winter months. With stubble burning in northern states, vehicular emissions and carbon emissions are seen adding to the pollution burden of the national capital.

The campaign will also seek to tackle the menace of stubble burning under which the farmers in Delhi region are being provided with a decomposer solution that would decompose the stubble without emitting the harmful emissions in the atmosphere.

While requesting people to join the campaign, Kejriwal said, “Covid-19 has led to distress among people. Let’s ensure that pollution doesn’t make things worse for us.”

Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director at the Centre for Science and Environment, said, “For this campaign to work in terms of behavioural change, it is very important to make sure traffic signals have timers and that the timers are functional. Several survey estimates have shown that reduced idling can lead to energy saving and less toxic exposure to particulate matters, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide.”Contact us – www.indiasaga.com.
