Traditional games adopted to teach children with special needs

The India Saga Saga |

Taking a unique initiative, Madras Dyslexia Association has adopted traditional games in their remedial techniques for teaching children with special needs.

The Association Special Educators claim to have witnessed significant improvements among children with the use of traditional games, which are vital in developing the pre-skills for all children. The improvements include in areas such as the children’s overall focus, fine motor skills from playing some of these games.

On 30 August, in Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi had brought to focus an important pedagogical tool, namely playing with toys.

Speaking about this initiative, Mr. D. Chandrasekhar, President, Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) said: “We at MDA are constantly in the process of inventing, reinventing, upgrading our remedial techniques in order to bring about the slightest difference possible in the child’s development. After a long day of school, children with dyslexia come for remedial classes, and then they attend therapy classes, after which they’re tutored at home and they finish their homework and whatever little time left, they’d like to spend it in front of the screen or playing against it.”

“Therefore, at Ananya (our fulltime remedial centre) when we make our Individualised Education Plan (IEP), we try and add in a pinch of traditional games in order to tweak their pre-skills, which are vital for the academic development. When you’re working with these traditional games, we realized that they were naturally multi-modal and multi-sensory and usually cater to more than one skill. These games can be easily adapted to suit the strengths and the needs of each child,’’ Dr Chandrasekhar said.

Traditional games have a way of seamlessly teaching physical growth and development, social-emotional development, sensory-motor development, communication skills, problem-solving, concept building skills, understanding and processing skills, executive functions, perceptual readiness for learning, listening, reading and writing besides several life skills, including social skills.

How does playing traditional games benefit children- especially children with Specific Learning Disability (SLD)?

The skills developed/built through the play of traditional games are very important life skills as well as academic skills that cannot be ignored.

Some of the practices and games and their benefits include:

The ritual bath, which helps develop gravity control (vestibular control), body awareness (proprioception) and midline crossing.

The ‘Thooli’ (baby hammock), which helps develop gravity control (vestibular control), body awareness (proprioception).

‘Pallanguzhi’ (mancala), which helps develop numeracy skills, fine motor and graphomotor skills, midline crossing, attention and focus develop.

‘Paandi’ (hopscotch), which helps develop balance, gravity control (vestibular control), proprioception, tactile stimulation, spatial awareness, focus and attention

‘Goli,’ which helps develop proprioceptive stimulation, vestibular control, fine motor control, spatial awareness, visual discrimination and tracking.

‘Bambaram’ (top), which helps develop proprioception, bilateral coordination, muscle tone improvement, spatial orientation, fine motor control and attention and focus.

Kite flying, which helps develop large motor movement, muscle tone, and spatial orientation.

Five stones, which helps develop attention, focus, sequential memory, multi-tasking, active working memory, eye-hand coordination, visual tracking, visual motor association, vestibular control and proprioceptive stimulation.

Further, Mr. Chandrasekhar said that India is a country really rich in culture and the cultural aspects of India are not confined to art, music and architecture but also extends to play. These games do not require any expensive props and everybody could play them regardless of age or gender. They cater to specific developmental aspects needed for children, keeping in mind the geographical and cultural backdrop.

BIMSTEC Summit in January 2021: PM Modi, Sheikh Hasina to participate

The India Saga |

Amidst ongoing border standoff and escalating tensions between India and China, it is confirmed that the 5th BIMSTEC summit will be held in January 2021.

Highly placed government sources in New Delhi have confirmed that all heads of the governments of member states including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina will participate in the summit meeting.

Sri Lanka ,the current chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) has proposed to host the fifth Summit of the regional grouping in the first half of January next year. Member states will discuss  the proposal and finalise the date and other agendas like holding the ministerial level meeting in Colombo ahead of Summit, sources added.

The summit was initially proposed for later this month but due to Covid-19 pandemic, it was postponed. After the summit in Sri Lanka ,the chairmanship of the regional bloc will be handed over to Thailand for the period of 2021-22. The Secretary-level meeting also approved the nomination of a new Secretary-General from Bhutan. The current Secretary General of BIMSTEC is ambassador Mohammad Shahidul Islam of Bangladesh who will be replaced by Tenzin Lekphell from Bhutan after the summit.

Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Srilanka and Thailand are the members of BIMSTEC that is often touted as a parallel of SAARC . In fact, Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla while speaking on Foreign policy on Friday did indicate that India is now seriously promoting BIMSTEC as SAARC grouping functioning is blocked by one member country. He was blaming Pakistan for blocking all initiatives for good cause for economic development of the region.

He was also mentioning how the Corona pandemic has made matters difficult for diplomacy as diplomats are not meeting physically among themselves which creates a lot of confusion. He said,”for this reason only I had to travel to Dhaka for dispeling all misconception about our relationship. And I found PM Sheikh Hasina was so happy to receive me. “

He also said that in Dhaka he had met at least 40-50 people in a short span of time which was necessary for networking with the people. Answering a question on the influence of China in Bangladesh, Mr Shringla categorically said that “this bilateral relationship should not be viewed through the rubric of the third country. Bangladesh is our nearest and close neighbour which comes under our neighborhood first policy”

He said, Bangladesh is now a rapidly growing country in terms of economy. India has invested $ 10 billion as Line of credit and loan for developing infrastructure and community based small projects. It is India’s highest assistance to any country in the world.

Higher Demand For Medicines Pushes Sanjivani Pharmacy To Ramp Up Presence Across 14 Tier-II, Tier-III Locations This Year

The India Saga Saga |

COVID-19 pandemic may have brought the shutters down on everything from the swanky malls to your neighborhood grocery shop, but one place that kept its doors open to the rest of the world was the local chemist. The local pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies as well as distributors have not only kept the economy going but they have also sustained India’s fight against coronavirus by providing timely medicines to patients. In keeping with this positive spirit, noted retailer-distributor of drugs for the past 14 years, Sanjivani Pharmacy, has decided to ramp up its presence in Tier-II and Tier-III cities of the country in this fiscal year. Sanjivani Pharmacy is one of the first chains of branded chemists, which began its operations in 2006, and within a few years, it became the most trusted brand for millions of customers in small-town India. This was one of the first pharmacies in the national capital region to open 24×7 services.

The pandemic has fuelled the demand for preventive as well as curative medicines, leaving more and more people dependent upon the neighborhood pharmacy. Moreover, there is huge scope in personalized, doorstep delivery of medicines & pharmaceutical equipment, owing to social distancing norms. The nation-wide lockdown has provided Sanjivani Pharmacy the chance to push its expansion and provide medicinal help in areas not covered thus far. In this direction, the company has opened more than 50 stores across the country between April and June 2020. Almost all of these new stores have been opened in cities and towns with a hitherto negligible medicinal supply network. With these new stores, the Sanjivani Pharmacy franchise model has helped the company reach out to the most remote corners of the country with medicinal supply in the current times of pandemic. NB Marketing Pvt. Ltd. is the parent company of Sanjivani Pharmacy and it sees immense potential in the Indian scenario. As Mayank puts it, “With the current situation of Coronavirus, people are now more conscious and aware than ever before, especially towards preventive and curative medicines. So, the need to have more pharmacy stores to serve the ever-growing demand becomes imperative.”

With the COVID infection showing no signs of relenting anytime soon, Sanjivani Pharmacy is looking forward to setting up 200 more stores across India by the end of the current fiscal. In doing so, the company is going to focus mainly on Tier II and Tier III cities and towns. Mayank Garg, Founder-Chairman of the Pharmacy, informs, “We feel that the Tier II and Tier III locations, where there isn’t any proper infrastructure to supply medicines to people’s doorsteps, are the best way to expand the business. We aren’t looking at from a purely commercial viewpoint. We also want to ensure that the chain of treatment continues unhindered. It shouldn’t be because of a shortage of medicines or pharmacies that a patient should succumb to any illness during these trying times.”

Sanjivani Pharmacy holds expertise in the distribution and retail of a large variety of medicines and medical equipment. With the COVID-19 pandemic, almost all of India was forced to stay indoors. As a result, Sanjivani Pharmacy stepped in to fulfill the demand and supply gap for people confined to their homes. Apart from opening new stores, the Pharmacy also arranged for personalized services to facilitate an easy experience for the customers through features like “no-minimum orders delivery” & “early morning or late night special shifts.” Doing so ensured that essential medicines were never too far away from the people in need and there was minimum wastage of time in delivery. Another innovative method introduced is “fast door-to-door service” which provides customers with medicines within one hour of the order being placed.

Mayank further adds, “Our company specializes in quality healthcare at an affordable price to people. Our array of products includes products that are allopathic, homeopathic, Ayurvedic, surgical, and cosmetic.”

Besides being awarded the “Franchiser of the Year” award 2017 at the 15th International Franchise & Retails Show, Sanjivani Pharmacy has also bagged significant institutional orders from healthcare brands like Tata Projects, Max Healthcare, and the Embassy of Dubai. Now with opening 50 new stores and looking forward to setting up about 150 stores more, Sanjivani Pharmacy is set to provide an opportunity to small-town pharmacists/retailers to associate with world-class solutions service in the field of pharmaceutical retail & distribution.

India is ready to resolve all unresolved issues with Bangladesh: Foreign Secretary Shringla

The India Saga |

Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla gave enough hint publicly to resolve all outstanding issues with Bangladesh soon. Mr Shringla was speaking on Friday in a webinar organised by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), a subsidiary organisation of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Foreign Secretary was speaking for the first time after his two-day visit to Dhaka recently. While choosing not to mention the name of the country and the issues, in a language couched in diplomatic intricacies, he said: “We see a lot of opportunities in our immediate neighbourhood. There are also challenges.”

He asserted:“We will work appropriately to resolve these.” Then he politely reminded in his own style ,”it must be noted ,that our capacities and resources are growing and we will always be prepared to adopt the necessary strategies and the tactics as required,.”

For a long time Bangladesh is expecting a just resolution of the Teesta water sharing agreement. It is not happening just because of the internal political problem of India. At the same time South Block is conscious of the fact that it cannot be delayed now for the emerging new situation on the geo-political map.

While explaining in detail the vision of Indian diplomacy during the pandemic Corona,  Mr Shringla emphasised that, the fundamental orientation of India’s policy remains Neighborhood First.

“We have demonstrated the priority accorded to neighbors in South Asia at the highest levels. This was evident during the Covid crisis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first regional engagement of Covid was with leaders of South Asia at the highest level.”  He reminded the audience that his first visit “after the pandemic was to neighbor and close friend Bangladesh”

On this occasion, he told the audience that in the coming year India is going to play a major role in the world stage. India will be member of Security Council in 2021, marking the 75th year of Independence and within two years will be President of G-20 countries. He said,” we will hold the Presidencies of BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation . All this are recognition of enhanced global standing and also provides opportunity for us to convey our perceptions ,our experience, and our priorities- not just for ourselves but for the shared world.

Remembering Nehru’s younger sister Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit – a freedom fighter, diplomat and politician

The India Saga |

The famous Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, first female President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and sister of independent India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was one of the leading women in public life. She was born on August 18, 1900 in Prayagraj to barrister Motilal Nehru and Swaroop Rani and lived a life in an elite aristocratic family.

Her father and brother were wholly involved in the country’s freedom movement. She also found herself drawn to the independence struggle and following her family’s footsteps got fully engrossed in it and was imprisoned on three occasions.

She was married to a fellow participant in freedom movement Ranjit Sitaram Pandit in 1921, a successful barrister from Kathiawar  in Gujarat and classical scholar who translated Kalahan’s epic history Rajtarangini into English from Sanskrit .

Her husband was a Maharashtrian Saraswat Brahmin, from Ratnagiri.  He was arrested for his support of Indian independence and died in Lucknow prison in 1944, leaving behind his wife and their three daughters Chandralekha Mehta, Nayantara Sehgal and Rita Dar. Nayantara Sehgal is a well known writer and novelist.

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandi was India’s Ambassador to the United States from 1949 to 1951 and later became Governor of Maharashtra from 1962 to 1964. After her brother Jawaharlal Nehru’s death, she represented his constituency Phulpur in Lok Sabha 1967 to 1971.

She was also was elected to the provincial legislature of the United Province in 1937 and was designated minister of local self-government and public health.

After India attained independence, she entered the diplomatic service and became India’s Ambassador to the Soviet Union, United States, Mexico, Ireland as well as  the Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Spain.

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit had slammed her niece and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s decision to impose emergency in 1975 and opposed it under the leadership of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan.

It was in 1987, I was assigned to record her memoirs for the oral history of freedom movement for All India Radio archives. I was cautioned not to force questions but to prompt and remind her of various phases of freedom movement which she had witnessed. She allowed me an hour’s time slot every week at her Rajpur Road residence in Dehradun.

It appeared that the bitterness in her mind and heart towards Indira Gandhi on imposition of emergency had diminished as the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had visited his grand-aunt only a few days ago in 1987 to pay his respect. This made her happy as she never expected the visit. She was also very sad on the assassination of her niece Indira Gandhi.

During her conversation with me traces of long acrimony were evident at times as Indira Gandhi’s dominance in the life and affairs of Pandit Nehru had sidelined Mrs Pandit in all spheres.

During her opposition to emergency, she addressed public meetings throughout the country with Janata Party leaders and her being there gave an impetus to the movement. Being from the Nehru family, she used to be much sought after in public meetings and was a star attraction as people thronged in good numbers to listen to her in the protest rallies.  I was also a witness to her rally at Bhopal’s Sadar Manzil ground attended by a large gathering.

Vijaya Laksmi Pandit had a sharp memory as she narrated the happenings photographically of successive events she witnessed in her life both in national and global scenario. She passed away in 1990.
