Cannot Prevent Earthquakes, But We Can Minimize the Damage: MoES

The India Saga Saga |

Uninvited it comes in and goes away with precious lives and properties or leaves one with virtually nothing! That’s how devastating high-magnitude earthquakes can get. The scary pictures of Uttarkashi (1991), Bhuj (2001), Japan (2011), etc. might still be fresh in the memories of many who got to witness them on TV sets in their homes. Unfathomable damage they can cause.

Although such earthquakes cannot be prevented, is there a way out to mitigate the damaging effects of such earthquakes? Probably yes, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) thinks so. Through seismic hazard microzonation of vulnerable areas and putting in place adequate mitigation measures, the Ministry believes that the impact of high-intensity earthquakes can be reduced to a great deal. The ambitious project of MoES is aimed at seismic hazard microzonation of major Indian cities and areas falling under high seismic zones IV and V.

Earthquake-vulnerable areas falling in seismic zones IV and V include the entire North-Eastern states, Delhi, Kutch areas in Gujarat, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

As per the plan of the Ministry, seismic hazard microzonation of important cities having population of half a million is to be carried out in a phased manner. It includes capital cities of a few states and some other cities in vulnerable areas. Authorities believe that it would effectively help them have an idea about the sites, which are more prone to seismic hazards within a particular city and accordingly mitigation measures may be adopted for the safety of the common masses.

So far, micro-seismic mapping of Sikkim and eight cities (Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Jabalpur, Ahmedabad, Dehra Dun, and Gandhidham) has been completed. Currently, work in four other cities – Coimbatore, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, and Mangalore – is in progress. Micro-seismic mapping of Agra, Amritsar, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Dhanbad and Meerut will be taken up soon after.

In the absence of a reliable prediction model for earthquakes, unlike in the case of Tsunamis, scientists believe that having well-thought and well-planned mitigation measures in place becomes more important.

“Predicting earthquakes accurately is not possible; though efforts are going on to develop a valid prediction model. But seismologists can provide seismic hazard microzonation maps which can effectively give an idea about the areas which are more prone to seismic hazards and accordingly mitigation measures may be adopted”, said Dr J.R. Kayal delivering NEIST (North East Institute of Science & Technology) Science Forum (NSF) Science Talk at CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat.

Japan is a leading example of how effective and well-implemented mitigation measures could make its citizens live in peace despite Japan falling in the high seismic zone and vulnerable to frequent earthquakes. Experts say that the civil engineering practice in Japan is fully compliant to seismic by-laws, where retrofitting of old and seismically vulnerable structures have been aggressively pursued and new structures are designed with seismic resilience.

India seems to be wanting in this direction. For having a successful mitigating measure in place, it is necessary to religiously adhere to building by-laws and retrofitting of structures should be aggressively taken up, particularly high rise buildings, bridges, hospitals, schools, and other major infrastructure.

“We have been working on identifying high hazardous areas for quite some time and we are in the process of undertaking seismic hazard microzonation, i.e. mapping on a larger scale for selected cities. The work has already been completed in eight cities and is in progress in some other cities. We are committed to developing mitigating measures for earthquake vulnerable areas and we are continuously working with other Government agencies to achieve the target”, said Dr B.K.Bansal, Director, National Centre for Seismology. Mobile Journalism, the changing face of Golden Age of Journalism

The India Saga Saga |

When a Dutch journalist Trian Speil first started using his mobile phone to cover a football match, many eyebrows were raised and people thought he was crazy. Speil noticed that the footballers were not bothered about the device that was recording their game, His act of recording the match using a handheld device made Speil realise that it does not alter the sanctity of journalism. And that was how mobile journalism or MoJo as it is called, came into existence.

The technological transformation of mobile phones and multimedia has been taking place for a long time. But it was until the birth of the commercial touch screen mobile devices offering flat subscriptions of the internet that excellent spread production and creation of news content began to flourish.

Mobile phones now act as critical equipment in the media industry. Not only did it change the way viewers or readers consume news but also paved the way for the future of content mediums and types. Accessing mobile phones news application have also gained traction from the everyday lives of people.

Mobile journalism is an emerging form of news media storytelling where reporters use portable electronic devices with network connectivity to edit and distribute news and is fast catching up.

One of the first instance of mobile journalism recorded is from wearable technology pioneer Steve Mann as a feature in a personal visual assistant he designed, he identified as a roving reporter.

In the beginning, he faced concerns. He then responded by writing on The Tech of MIT on July 24, 1996, as a guest column “Wearcam Helps Address Privacy issues. In the column, Steve stated he was wearing his experimental eyeglass to bring awareness to the huge and growing number of surveillance cameras that were watching over citizens activities, MoJo has now become an essential part of skill for journalists.

MoJo in India has caught up with the rest of the world and the endless streams of news and first-hand accounts of events around the country are testimony to its proliferation even at the grassroot levels.

Today, the biggest challenge facing the news media houses is the changing means of distribution of news through the mobiles, which deliver news at a greater pace in more accessible formats and when consumers demand them.

During the past decade, digital technology has transformed digital technology and accelerated the way journalists work. To do their job quickly, busy reporters need the simplest technology.

The number of Smartphone users in India is expected to rise by 84 percent to 859 million by 2022 from 468 million in 2017, according to a joint study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India and PWC.

And India has the world’s highest data usage per Smartphone at an average of 9.8 GB per month, Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson said adding this will double to 18 GB by 2024, fuelled by rich video content.

India’s data consumption has exploded, largely due to Reliance’s Jio’s entry in the market in September 2016, with all other operators also offering cheap data tariffs.

Mobile data traffic is growing as more Indians spend time streaming videos, which is expected to account for 75 percent of overall mobile traffic by 2024. The rapid growth in especially mobile internet use in India in recent years has been accompanied by a boom in news digital journalism. More and more newspapers are shifting to digitalized versions.

Indian media, to have started to realise the potential and usage of MoJo in the media industry. Few renowned Indian media houses have already begun working towards adopting the new practice, A number of media organisations have also developed mobile applications to provide on-your-fingertips services to its consumers,’Growing trends in internet connectivity and Smartphone handsets stands as a major factor to support the MoJo as an upcoming journalism practice in Indian media. Media organisations have just begun with experiencing cultural shifts in their newsrooms, Once MoJo starts to expand its empires, the existing newsrooms are expected to undergo a major and more-in-depth cultural shift in terms of practices, equipment and editing procedures, MoJo has introduced the Indian media to a new trend, The organizations, as a result, are undergoing and experiencing cultural shifts, but not all the Indian media have been exposed to the possibilities of employing the method, Still, a larger set of audience in India consume news information on the television and newspapers.

But with the growth of mobile phone companies and internet service providers, India makes a rich and potential state for MoJo and accepted by the Indian media sooner or later.

Dr. Asha Goel’s Murder: Hearing Of Trial Delayed Again,Canadian Family Makes 89th Trip to India

The India Saga Saga |

The trial against the gruesome murder of the Canadian national Dr. Asha Goel at Malabar Hills in Mumbai in 2003 has once again been delayed. The court has set 18th January as the next hearing.

On Monday, Asha Goel’s son Sanjay Goel, along with his father Dr. Sadan Goel, came to India for the 89th time in the last 16 years seeking justice for Dr. Asha Goel’s killing.

Speaking to media, Son Sanjay said, “Today we were here for the hearing of eleven separate pre-trial motions and petitions from the defense. The Indian judiciary gives voice not only to the victims but also to the accused but unfortunately, that process gets abused. One of the pleadings from the defense was laughable. It said one of the officers of the Mumbai Crime Unit traveled to Canada and compromised forensic and scientific evidence in Ontario. Mr. Sanjay burst out laughing at this point and later apologized to the judge mentioning that’s It wasn’t his intention to disrespect the court but the defense pleading was laughable. We have been destroyed with this delayed justice.”

He further said that this delay is nothing short of monumental. “When we consider that the police have scientific evidence and confession, it makes no sense the trial is still awaited. My dad is in 80s but he is still here hoping for justice.”

Talking about his mother Dr. Asha Goel, Sanjay said, “She came to Canada when she was 21 or 22. At that time, to the best of my knowledge, she was the youngest Obstetrician in Canadian history. She helped deliver more than 10,000 children. It’s a great loss for not only us but the community at Orangeville in Canada.”

Son Sanjay alleged that the Canadian government didn’t help the cause despite his mother’s legacy in Orangeville.

Backgrounder

In August 2003, she was stabbed to death in a property dispute at Malabar Hills Flat in Mumbai. Dr. Asha Goeal, 40, an obstetrician and gynecologist who worked in Saskatchewan was murdered amid a bitter dispute over the inheritance of $ 10 million (about 70 million) that pitted her against her brothers. Her son says that she wanted to restore peace between her brothers and was brutally killed in cold blood in 2003.

According to a report published on a Canada-based news portal, only days after she confronted one brother, her battered body was found in his apartment in Mumbai. Since then, her husband, son, and son-in-law have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in a two-year fight to bring her killers to justice. Yet the justice has not been served as even the trial has not started in the Mumbai High Court.

According to court documents in 2006, police allege that Subhash Agrawal, 56, was part of a conspiracy to kill his sister Asha Goel. Subhash resides in Canada and terms this accusation as a smear campaign against him.

Subhash challenged the accusations in Mumbai High Court in 2006 saying that he is the target of a vindictive smear campaign and that there is “not even a whisper” of evidence against him.

Crime Branch Role and Chronology

According to Mumbai Crime Branch senior investigator Jaywald Hargude, the three were questioned and pointed to Suresh as the mastermind.

In December 2006, police filed charge sheets — a summary of evidence and a recommendation of charges to Indian court — against Mr. Parab and the three he named.

In those charge sheets and in subsequent court filings, police also accused Subhash of conspiring with the men and declared he is a wanted man.

“The investigation in this case clearly points towards the existence of a criminal conspiracy which was essentially hatched by none other than the deceased’s own brothers,” Mr. Hargude wrote in a court filing. The motive that shattered the powerful, wealthy Indian family? A quarrel over the inheritance, he wrote.

Now, yet after the 89th trip to India, the victim family is wandering for justice.

Coworking Cafes – Teapot Tempest or the Next Big Thing?

The India Saga Saga |

Rising real estate rentals, diminishing brand loyalty among millennials and rising operating costs in metros have been brewing trouble for innumerable cafes operating across India. Unable to survive the heat, many coffee shops are compelled to shut shop within 18 months into the business.

For instance, rentals – as a percentage of operating costs – have nearly doubled in the last few years eating away almost 15-20% of their overall revenue on an average – in prime locales, they can go as high as 25%. To make matters worse, the rise of tea bars such as Chai Point and Chaayos is also eating into the traditional coffee-led café segment.

Necessity – The Mother of Reinvention

Given the changing dynamics and brands facing a deluge of competition, it is imperative that cafes remain upbeat, creative and ahead of the pack. Their new-age millennial customers are also constantly looking for more. This has given rise to the co-working culture in coffee bars or cafes, leading to a stupendous rise in the number of not only the usual coffee chains but also concept cafes or bistros across cities.

To keep their business afloat, cafes are continuously re-strategizing their business and need to be at their creative best. For instance, in Delhi, cafes such as Social Offline and Flyp@MTV were regular cafes wherein around 45-50% of the seats remained vacant during the day. They have now reinvented themselves and not only turned their establishments into café-cum-coworking hubs but also transformed into full-blown bars later in the evening.

This strategy adroitly wires into the quintessential millennial ethos of working hard and partying harder. It is the time-honoured formula of maximum utilization of existing resources with an aggressively creative twist.

The widespread opportunities for such reinvention also help them to re-establish their brands. From mere hang-out joints, many cafes are becoming hubs where the millennials work from, with the perfect chill ambience, hi-tech facilities and free Wi-fi – with the added benefit of F&B, which enables them to stretch their working hours painlessly and in style.

Not an Easy Transition

For cafés, this would appear to be a highly commendable capacity planning strategy. However, achieving such a metamorphosis is not as easy as one may think. There are several challenges to achieving successful conversion:

  • Space constraints – For many cafes, transforming into co-working hubs will require additional space – and scaling up is not always feasible, especially in the CBD and SBD areas where cafés invariably strive to operate in.
  • Location, location, location – The success of this new formula also depends on the location of the property. For a co-working space to operate with a minimum vacancy, the location of the centre/cafe must be prime. ANAROCK research indicates that co-working centres located in CBD areas have the least vacancy, while those in less central areas fail to attract footfalls.
  • Significantly higher investments – Such cafes will have to invest a lot more than in mere swankiness. Tech-savvy millennials want to work out of completely technologically-enabled facilities offering both wired and non-wired internet connectivity, as well as state-of-art infrastructure.
  • Parking Â– Garden-variety cafes can operate without a lot of reserved parking spaces as they tend to depend significantly on walk-in customers in the immediate neighbourhood. However, the game gets real when they transition into coworking – they need more parking spaces if they want to increase their base of working professionals.
  • Operating permits – The licenses for setting up a café (health trade, F&B, playing music/video, etc.) are already tedious to obtain. If an establishment wants to turn itself into a cafe-cum-coworking hub, it will need to get additional permits since these are in a way similar to office spaces.
  • Cybersecurity – There will be a considerable onus on ensuring safety and also cybersecurity within the premises because co-working exposes a business to several risks. For companies dealing with high volumes of confidential data, sharing space with external places such as cafes can be potentially challenging. Today, cybersecurity is a major strategic challenge for any organisation, and café-cum-coworking spaces must invest in reducing this risk.

‘Coworking cafes’ can be the ideal launchpad for start-ups – but eventually, such firms will require more professional, formal, secure and safe business environment at a reasonable cost. Cafes with co-working options are essentially informal spaces where one can begin the journey. However, as their business progresses, more organized and dedicated coworking spaces are logically the next level for any start-up – of course, at a higher cost.
