Scrap rubbers such as worn-out vehicle tyres contribute to environmental pollution, and there is an urgent need for safely repurposing them.

A team of researchers from India and Germany has devised a new process to retrieve almost all different types of rubber from used and discarded vulcanised scrap rubber. The process not only reclaims a high amount of rubber but also is of superior quality which can be repurposed into other products including making new tyres. 

It is estimated that nearly one billion scrap tyres are discarded annually. Incinerating them emits potent greenhouse gases, whereas pyrolysing them leaves carbon black and different hydrocarbon oils without rubber residue. The few recycling processes are elaborate and expensive with very little value addition to rubber.

Devulcanization of rubber is a better way of repurposing used rubber. The few conventional methods to devulcanize rubber material are prone to toxic emissions and yield a very low degree of devulcanization in the end. 

“Our chemical procedure is very safe with no toxic emissions as it involves what is called the chain capping reaction during devulcanization. Also, the silica reinforcement during devulcanization through coupling reaction exhibits enhanced strength of the material,” explained Dr Debapriya De, lead researcher at MCKV Institute of Engineering, Howrah, while speaking to India Science Wire.

For their study, the team procured commercial shredded waste rubber material and added a specific devulcanizing agent called TESPT to break sulphur bonds of vulcanisation. The resulting material was ground and subjected to mechanical rolling process from which elastomeric sheets of original thermoplastic like rubber were obtained. 

The reclaimed material was assessed chemically, morphologically and mechanically. The material exhibited good mechanical properties, tear strength, abrasion resistance, and dynamic mechanical properties with comparable toughness and composition to fresh rubber.

This rubber can be used in making products like automobile floor mats, soft tiles, boots and sheets. Also, by mixing the devulcanized rubber with fresh rubber, compounding agents and silica, it can once again be vulcanised into new tyres, saving precious amounts of raw material and industrial costs said Dr. De.

The team included Debapriya De and  Soumyajit Ghorai (MCKV Institute of Engineering, Howrah); Dipankar Mondal (University of Calcutta); Sakrit Hait, Anik Kumar Ghosh, Sven Wiessner and Amit Das (Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V, Dresden, Germany). Rabies is a major public health problem. According to WHO, it claims over 59,000 lives each year, mostly in Asia and Africa. Recent studies estimate that India witnesses 17.4 million animal bites annually with 20,800 rabies deaths, being the highest in the world. With a large stray dog population, India needs a huge quantity of anti-rabies vaccine every year.

A rabies vaccine relaunched on Wednesday by Chiron Behring Vaccines, a part of Bharat Biotech, promises to address the need to a great extent. It is a purified chick embryo cell (PCEC) anti-rabies vaccine to be sold under new trade name, Chirorab. The vaccine was earlier marketed under trade name Rabipur. It is an inactivated vaccine used for active pre and post-exposure immunisation against Rabies. The vaccine is being manufactured with the original technology and at the same site, a WHO pre-qualified facility, in Ankleshwar, Gujarat.

Speaking on the occasion, Department of Biotechnology (DBT) secretary Dr. Renu Swarup said, “India has taken a lead in development and manufacture of vaccines and this has been recognized globally. Some of these vaccines have been developed in public private participation (PPP) mode with public research institutions working closely with private companies. Our public policies are geared to promote such collaboration further and thus help develop effective vaccines for various diseases.”

Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Biotech, Dr. Krishna Ella said Â“in our ongoing commitment to address the supply shortage of rabies vaccine, we are making additional investments to increase production capacity to over 15 million doses annually.” The vaccine will be made available to government hospitals in various states through tenders, with the remaining available for the private markets and exports. 

Dr. Charles Ruprecht, former head of the Rabies programme at Centres of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said Â“the renewed local production of human rabies vaccine should help achieve the ‘Zero By Thirty’ goal for human rabies prevention in the Indian sub-continent and the region as a whole.”

Hoechst originally set up the facility to manufacture the vaccine in 1989. It took the name of Chiron Behring Vaccines after Chiron Corporation acquired it. It was subsequently taken over by Novartis in 2006 and GSK in 2015. Bharat Biotech acquired the company in March this year leading to restarting of commercial operations in May 2019. Chiron Behring is WHO Pre-qualified manufacturer of rabies vaccines.

The immunogenicity, efficacy, and safety of the vaccinehas been assessed in several clinical trials in pre- and post-exposure regimens, using both intra-muscular and intra-dermal routes of administration. It has been evaluated in over 25 controlled clinical trials in five countries in more than 7,000 subjects, the company said. During the past 30 years, over 80 million doses of this vaccine have been distributed worldwide. (India Science Wire)

I m so enthusiastically in this period cause  I am  Ambassador of Opera style in India… I don t think a real artist should ever be inhibited in anything otherwise it’s not pure art..and me, in my life I have never been inhibited, my motto is MAKE WHATEVER YOU LOVE AND YOU BELIEVE IN WITH ALL YOUR ENERGIES ..NEVER BE SCARED! 

I will just give an example…I was a child of 14 years old and my colleagues were 40 years old, so they treated me like parents cause i spent much more time with them rather than with my real family (to prepare an opera show you have to live in the theatre at least 30 days for each production, and most of the shows take place during Christmas time so it has happened that I haven t spent Christmas festivities with my family sometimes even for 10 years because I was abroad for work) so my colleagues who were much older than me used to take care of me because for them was very unusual to see a small child body with a big adult opera voice inside it..so they used to call me ” little diamond” so I feel the whole world to be my house .. As for my Birth, my mother used to say that I was born not crying but singing! 🙂 The passion for music was born with me. I have spent almost all my childhood on a piano and practicing singing… it’s very difficult to become an opera singer..not anyone can become it..you must yes have the gift of voice from God but also you have to learn the technique for not losing your voice and for reach very high or very low notes and to increase the power of your voice.. you have to study a lot the technique of using diagrammatic muscles and the bones of your faces to gain the best resonances in your voice because in opera shows we don’t even use microphones because opera voice is very strong..one time happened to me to break a glass with my voice..but special physical situation must occur… THAT ‘ S my LIFESTYLE!. In an opera singer s life you must sleep at least 8 hours per night, you do not have to drink alcohol or to smoke, avoid acid foods, you have to practice every day until 90 years old ..you never finish to learn and your vocal chords a muscles must be worked out every day with constant and patience. .so its a continuous discover of sounds and u start to feel all the resonances of your body once you reach a very high level of skills..me for examples I m very happy because I have reached four octaves of extensions in my voice that very few people in the world of opera singing have achieved.

it s like the life of an athlet..you have to do vocalize in the morning after you wake up you have to warm up your voice with some vocalizes and some muscles and breathing exercises.. it’s very important! only after that you can go to the piano and start singing your songs..which actually in opera style are called “arias”. there are some virtuosisitic songs in which you have to sing very fast even 50 notes very fast in just one breath and with lyrics and you have to be careful to not let your tongue to get disconnected..for achieving this virtue you have to first start in a very slow way and little by little increase velocity. .till you see as a light in your voice..It s such a fascinating mood that even if during my childhood I lost all the moments of life that normally a child does( like playing with dolls or going out with friends) I don t regret. I m always like a little child who is discovering new music sounds, cause I m always a researcher, I am discovering a new world, learning a new language and all these things make me so happy.

I ve Always done the thing that my heart and my voice suggested to me and on this base, I have built my creativeness and just when you are happy and in peace with yourself the most beautiful things come out and you are able to let me also the audience enjoy. So I will continue in this path and I m already selecting among all the proposals that I have received the one which is sounding better in my soul..so stay tuned..I will surprise you soon with a great new striking effect !..maybe not only as a singer but I ll explore also my other artistic skills!
