Adopting A Healthy Lifestyle Helps Reduce The Risk Of Dementia : WHO

The India Saga Saga |

People can reduce their risk of dementia by getting regular exercise, not smoking, avoiding harmful use of alcohol, controlling their weight, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, according to new guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).

“In the next 30 years, the number of people with dementia is expected to triple,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia. The scientific evidence gathered for these Guidelines confirm what we have suspected for some time, that what is good for our heart, is also good for our brain.”

The Guidelines provide the knowledge base for health-care providers to advise patients on what they can do to help prevent cognitive decline and dementia. They will also be useful for governments, policy-makers and planning authorities to guide them in developing policy and designing programmes that encourage healthy lifestyles.

The reduction of risk factors for dementia is one of several areas of action included in WHO’s Global action plan for the public health response to dementia. Other areas include: strengthening information systems for dementia; diagnosis, treatment and care; supporting carers of people with dementia; and research and innovation.

WHO’s Global Dementia Observatory, launched in December 2017, is a compilation of information about country activities and resources for dementia, such as national plans, dementia-friendly initiatives, awareness campaigns and facilities for care. Data from 21 countries, including Bangladesh, Chile, France, Japan, Jordan and Togo, have already been included, with a total of 80 countries now engaged in providing data.

Creating national policies and plans for dementia are among WHO’s key recommendations for countries in their efforts to manage this growing health challenge. During 2018, WHO provided support to countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Qatar, Slovenia and Sri Lanka to help them develop a comprehensive, multi-sectoral public health response to dementia.

An essential element of every national dementia plan is support for carers of people with dementia, said Dr Dévora Kestel, Director of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at WHO. “Dementia carers are very often family members who need to make considerable adjustments to their family and professional lives to care for their loved ones. This is why WHO created iSupport. iSupport is an online training programme providing carers of people with dementia with advice on overall management of care, dealing with behaviour changes and how to look after their own health.”

iSupport  is currently being used in eight countries, with more expected to follow.

Dementia: A rapidly growing public health problem

Dementia is an illness characterized by a deterioration in cognitive function beyond what might be expected from normal ageing. It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language and judgement. Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer disease or stroke.

Dementia is a rapidly growing public health problem affecting around 50 million people globally. There are nearly 10 million new cases every year. Dementia is a major cause of disability and dependency among older people. Additionally, the disease inflicts a heavy economic burden on societies as a whole, with the costs of caring for people with dementia estimated to rise to US$ 2 trillion annually by 2030.

Currently there is no cure for dementia. However, much can be done to support people living with dementia. Early diagnosis is important; regular health checks can help to ensure that accompanying physical illnesses are diagnosed and treated; and health and social care systems, when adequately resourced, can ensure care at all stages of dementia.

2.5 Million Newborn Die Every Year Because Of Low Birthweight : Study

The India Saga Saga |

More than 20 million babies were born with a low birthweight (less than 2500g; 5.5 pounds) in 2015—around one in seven of all births worldwide according to the first-ever estimates documenting this major health challenge.

These findings and more are documented in a new research paper developed by experts from the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, published in The Lancet Global Health.

More than 80% of the world’s 2.5 million newborns who die every year are of low birthweight. Those low birthweight babies who survive have a greater risk of stunting, and developmental and physical ill health later in life, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“Low birthweight is a complex clinical entity composed of intrauterine growth restriction and preterm birth,” says co-author Dr Mercedes de Onis from the Department of Nutrition at WHO.

“This is why reducing low birthweight requires an understanding of the underlying causes in a given country. For example, in Southern Asia a large proportion of low birthweight babies are born at term but with intrauterine growth restriction, which is associated with maternal undernutrition, including maternal stunting.

“Conversely, preterm birth is the major contributor to low birthweight in settings with many adolescent pregnancies, high prevalence of infection, or where pregnancy is associated with high levels of fertility treatment and caesarean sections (like in USA and Brazil). Understanding and tackling these underlying causes in high-burden countries should be a priority.”

Although close to three-quarters were born in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the problem remains substantial in high-income countries in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. High-income countries have seen virtually no progress.

What is being done to tackle this major public health problem

Reducing the incidence of low birth weight requires a comprehensive global strategy, which must include improving maternal nutritional status; treating pregnancy-associated conditions such as pre-eclampsia (hypertensive disease of pregnancy); and providing adequate maternal care, perinatal clinical services and social support.

Affordable, accessible and appropriate health-care is critical for preventing and treating low birthweight. Reductions in death, illness and disability in newborn babies will only be achieved if pregnancy care is fully integrated with appropriate care for low birthweight babies.

Kunal Kamra

@kunalkamra88

Without you this milestone would have been impossible. Thank you bro @narendramodi

How can we forgot Shyam Rangeela who did a hilarious parody of Akhsay Kumar’s Non – Political Interview with Narendra Modi.  The questions that were asked in the real interview were only modified to make them sound like they were a part of the parody interview. For example, Akshay Kumar’s “Kya Aap Aam Khate hai?” was replaced with “Kya Aap kulfi khate hai?”  However, the one thing remained constant throughout was Shyam Rangeela saying, “Dekhiye main bahut hi gareeb parivaar se hoon.” LOL! One of the most hilarious questions asked in the spoof video was what kind of difficulties were faced by PM Modi when he used to sell tea.  This one was hilarious when Shyam Rangeela Said ‘I sleep for only three hours at night. I sleep during the day to cover the rest of the hours.’ The interview received its equal share of both appreciation and criticism on social media.

Comedian Rajeev Nigam is also among one of them his latest video on Radar Wale Baba | The Multi Shades of Modi Ji.

The Indian stand up industry is still unorganised and uncertain for comics.

He has also experienced variations in the plot that demanded, kissing & bed scenes, drunk state, action drama, supernatural powers & death.

Stress A Leading Cause Of High-Risk Pregnancy In First-Time Mothers

The India Saga Saga |

Mumbai: While the birth of a child is an exhilarating phase for a first-time mother, it is also a taxing time, both physically and mentally. The woman is suddenly thrust into a new role from all the pampering in the pregnancy phase. To add to this the fluctuating hormone levels and it is not uncommon for her to feel low. Experts believe that even though some amount of anxiety is common, many first time mothers are highly stressed during pregnancy and the number is surely going up.

Dr. Pooja Bandekar, Head of Unit, The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, said, “The stress levels in the first time mothers are surging up. There is a 10 percent increase from the last five years. Advancing age, lessen threshold for pain, a sedentary lifestyle, problems like obesity diabetes, hypertension, and other factors like IVF pregnancies can be the reasons. The stress does not directly affect the baby as the factors causing stress are tackled and the babies are evaluated accordingly. Stressors aren’t allowed to pass on to the baby as the corrective measures are taken on time. To de-stress, relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, change of activity along with physical and physiological rest is recommended.”

Dr. Anu Vinod Vij, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, said, “I have seen 7-8 % of first-time mothers experiencing stress since last five years. Stress is commonly seen in the first time mothers who are in the higher age group, are career oriented and the ones who have conceived with assisted reproductive treatment (ART), which refers to treatments used to assist people in achieving a pregnancy wherein depending on the cause of infertility, the following types of treatment like ovulation induction (OI), artificial insemination (AI), as they are tense that how will this pregnancy go forward?

The women may also exhibit symptoms like weakness, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, owing to stress. Moreover, they may also get high blood pressure which is the part and parcel of high age group.”

“Both physical and emotional changes take place during pregnancy.  Sometimes, the first time mothers may feel depressed, anxious and experience mood swings like crying for no reason. At times, they may feel happy out of proportion to the stimulus.  Furthermore, stress will cause high blood pressure and high pulse rate which will indirectly affect the baby. Psychologically, there is a connection between the mother’s and baby’s psyche.  That is why mothers are advised to be happy and optimistic and be in a productive atmosphere so that baby psyche is maintained,” she added.

Stress in the first time mothers can be tackled with the help of a coping mechanism.

“Relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, music therapy, and also identifying the triggers of stress, can be helpful. Furthermore, women who are stressed must discuss it with husbands and family members without any delay as this will help them deal with stress. In extreme cases, the woman will be referred to a psychiatrist, who will counsel and prescribe her medications. I urge the first time mothers that don’t let your feelings bottled up, as this can make your diagnosis difficult. Hence, speak to your doctor about your stress and its symptoms, and this will allow you to get back on track,” concluded Dr. Vij.
