Book Review

The story of the book set in the next Treta Yuga starts from the theory of creation of Universe and how mankind came into existence. It then depicts how civilizations emerged and social norms, political structures and economic models were shaped with time.

The shift of the world from good to bad and bad to worse explains how greed, lust, selfish motives and other vices made the mankind turn corrupt. The mentor of mankind, the powerful first born- Prathamjiv creates a clan of Daityas and with invincible power he becomes a dictator, ruling the entire earth without the ideals of justice, equality and freedom.

When the earth is gripped with tyrannical rule, two prodigal warriors start their journey of becoming heroes; essentially to liberate the mankind from adharma. As their stories progress, the book is full of adventures, adrenaline twists and turns and many memorable scenes. In particular the battles depicted in the story are very real and detailed, full of strategies and counter-strikes and it makes the readers imagine every scene very clearly. Apart from the battle scenes, there are many more hypnotic sequences like a chase and couple of fight scenes in the Kailash mountain region and the flow of river Ganga from Lord Shiva’s hair-locks. The book also shows mystic creatures like Yakshas and Narklokis and describes their ways of life in an exciting way.

Another notable point of the book is the use of romance in a strong manner and the female characters are shown to be really empowering and mighty.  Full of many characters with their own sub-plots, the book is truly an epic saga with various twists that would surprise the readers many-a-times. The ending of the book is a huge world war which has been written like a screenplay and readers can visualize the events in it.

Righting The Wrongs And Resolving The Tobacco Problem Through ENDS

The India Saga Saga |

The debate has intensified in India as to the merits of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) or what is commonly referred to as e-cigarettes, with passion displayed on both sides of the argument. Despite it being a relatively contemporary debate, research has been undertaken for over ten years and it is clear that these new technologies do not pose significant health risks.

Nonetheless, ENDS are incorrectly viewed as equally harmful as conventional cigarettes. However, an objective review of the evidence is unequivocal in the benefits of the category with the objective of harm reduction. They can play a critical role in addressing a major public health crisis in India and the world.  ENDS are not risk-free, but even the most stubborn critics in the tobacco control movement must now acknowledge that they are a much less harmful alternative to tobacco cigarettes. And smokers not intending or unable to quit must have access to less harmful alternatives.

The science proves that e-cigarettes give smokers what they seek – nicotine – without the harm associated with tobacco combustion toxicants. Findings from Public Health England show that e-cigarettes are 95 per cent less harmful. My own research into chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a major cause of tobacco related death that was tracked over a 3.5 year period found that regular use of vaping products ameliorates several health effect indicators in COPD and demonstrates that these beneficial effects are likely to continue in the longer term. By markedly reducing the number of conventional cigarettes smoked per day and hence exposure to their numerous hazardous toxicants, EC use may not only enhance COPD outcomes, but may also bestow an overall health advantage.

Although reducing the negative health burden of tobacco smoking is a clear priority for COPD patients who smoke, high failure rates are frequently reported in these patients. Moreover, approved smoking cessation therapies (ie, nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion, and varenicline) only seem to promote modest enduring cessation in smoking COPD patients. This is because the subjects may find it challenging to completely stop using nicotine and/or require longer treatment regimen, support, or nicotine maintenance to possibly aid in attaining continued abstinence from smoking. For these individuals, tobacco harm reduction (THR), that is, the use of combustion-free nicotine delivery systems  could be a pragmatic compromise with the possibility of significant health gains. Although it is important to acknowledge that nicotine is a potent psycho-stimulant and young people should avoid its use, in conventional cigarettes, it is not nicotine but tobacco combustion chemicals that are the overwhelming cause of tobacco-related disease and death. As respiratory physicians, we should be more concerned of the damage associated with the harmful and potentially harmful constituents generated after combustion than nicotine consumption per se.

A rapid reduction of smoking prevalence has been shown in all countries where the tobacco harm reduction principle, including regulating ENDS, has been integrated with existing tobacco control policies. I believe that full substitution of tobacco cigarettes with these new technologies may well reduce the risk of future tobacco-related diseases. I’m not saying these new technologies will completely solve the problem, but neither will the tobacco control policies we have now. I believe an integration of two solutions, like new nicotine delivery systems and tobacco control policies, would lead to the best results, as currently shown in those countries where e-cigarettes have become popular.

The advisory from the Indian government to prohibit ENDS does not take into account that it is incumbent upon a welfare oriented government to work together with the scientific community to better protect the millions of Indian smokers by adopting a harm reduction strategy.

A tool that helps tackle nicotine addiction and also helps reduce the use of traditional tobacco-based cigarettes is an opportunity that cannot be missed. It is an opportunity for society to address one of the world’s most serious public health issues by taking advantage of technological innovation allowing much less harmful nicotine consumption. India and the world needs to recognise the potential of ENDS in reducing the adverse health effects of smoking.

A Free Press Is ‘Cornerstone’ For Accountability And ‘Speaking Truth To Power’: UN

The India Saga Saga |

At a time when disinformation and mistrust of the news media is growing, a free press is “essential for peace, justice, sustainable development and human rights”, said the UN Secretary-General, in his message for World Press Freedom Day, marked on Friday.

No democracy is complete without access to transparent and reliable information, said António Guterres, describing unfettered journalism as “the cornerstone for building fair and impartial institutions, holding leaders accountable and speaking truth to power.”

This years commemorations which began on Thursday across the world, are focussing on the powerful role that good reporting plays in championing democracy and free elections, when disinformation is becoming a larger problem in even the world’s oldest and most sophisticated democratic systems.

“Facts, not falsehoods, should guide people as they choose their representatives”, said the UN chief, noting that “while technology has transformed the ways in which we receive and share information, sometimes it is used to mislead public opinion or to fuel violence and hatred.”

According to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), almost 100 journalists were killed going about their work in 2018, with hundreds imprisoned. A total of 1,307 journalists were killed between 1994, and last year.

Mr. Guterres said he was “deeply troubled by the growing number of attacks and the culture of impunity…When media workers are targeted, societies as a whole pay a price.”

Researchers At IIT Mandi Show Zinc Supplementation Suppresses Fat Deposition In The Liver

The India Saga Saga |

Latest research has shown that zinc oxide nanoparticles can prevent fat accumulation in the liver and thereby prevent Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).

The research by IIT Mandi recently published in the journal of Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine has shown using cell and mice models that zinc supplementations either in the form of nanoparticles or salts are effective in reducing fat accumulation in the liver and inducing peripheral insulin sensitivity.

The researchers first treated human hepatocellular carcinoma cells with zinc oxide nanoparticles and tested the lipid accumulation in the cells in comparison to untreated cells. They also injected the nanoparticles into the bodies of mice fed with fatty diet and monitored cell signaling, gene expression and also assessed the cellular energy levels.  The mice were also subjected to glucose tolerance tests to assess insulin function and compared with mice fed with normal diet and fat-fed mice not treated with the nanoparticles.

In the cell tests, the researchers found that the presence of zinc oxide nanoparticles prevented accumulation of fat in them. In the mice models, they found that the zinc supplements prevented the cellular factors that enhance fat storage in the livers of fat-fed mice. In nutshell, Zinc supplements ameliorate fatty liver disease through negative energy balance, and hepatic lipogenic regulation in diet-induced obese mice.

The research team was led by Dr. Prosenjit Mondal, Assistant Professor, School of Basic Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, and Dr. Debabrata Ghosh from CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR-IITR), Lucknow,

Liver, the largest internal human organ, secretes bile, stores glucose in the form of glycogen, and converts vitamins, minerals and amino acids into their biologically absorbable forms. While hepatitis viral infections and alcohol-induced liver malfunctions used to be the main cause of liver diseases in the past, the dramatic shift towards sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy food habits has caused them to be outpaced by Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease or NAFLD.

“NAFLD is a condition in which the body creates too much fat that gets stored in the liver cells, called steatosis, which could lead to scarring or cirrhosis, and eventual liver failure”, says Dr. Prosenjit Mondal.

WHO reports that the number of deaths due to liver diseases in India was 259,749 in 2017. Nearly 120 million Indians are estimated to suffer from NAFLD, with a higher incidence rate amongst obese and diabetic people.

“Insulin resistance is one of the hallmarks of NAFLD”, the researchers write in their article. In addition to converting blood glucose into storable forms such as glycogen, insulin also induces lipid generation from non-fat sources, a process called lipogenesis. A complex array of cellular factors and enzymes regulate lipogenesis. When this signaling becomes faulty, due to bad lifestyle and/or genetic predisposition, insulin function is impaired and there is excess lipogenesis, resulting in increased fat accumulation in the liver.

The study was funded by Seed Research grant from IIT Mandi, and Science & Engineering Research Board grant, India to Dr. Prosenjit Mondal.

Co-investigators on the study were research scholars, Ms.  Surbhi Dogra, Ms. Khyati Girdhar, Mr. P. Vineeth Daniel, Mr. Swarup Chatterjee, Mr. Abhinav Choubey & faculty Dr. Subrata Ghosh from IIT Mandi and Dr. Satyakam Patnaik and Aditya K Kar from CSIR-IITR.

Researchers Crack Genetic Code To Develop High-Yielding, Climate Resilient Chickpea

The India Saga Saga |

Scientists from 21 research institutes globally, claim to have successfully completed sequencing of 429 chickpea lines from 45 countries to identify genes for tolerance to drought and heat. The study also mapped the origins of chickpea and its ascent in Asia and Africa.

Dubbed as the largest-ever exercise of whole-genome resequencing of chickpea, the team led by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in close collaboration with the BGI-Shenzhen, China, involved 39 scientists from leading research institutes world over.

In simple terms, this means potential development of newer varieties of chickpea with higher yields, which are disease-and-pest-resistant, and better able to withstand the vagaries of weather, a statement by ICRISAT said.

The results of the three-year-long efforts have now been published in Nature Genetics online with the title, ‘Resequencing of 429 chickpea accessions from 45 countries provides insights into genome diversity, domestication and agronomic traits’.

More than 90% of chickpea cultivation area is in South Asia. Drought and increasing temperatures are said to cause more than 70% yield loss in chickpea globally. Chickpea being a cool season crop is likely to suffer further reduction in productivity due to rising temperatures.

“The genome-wide association studies identified several candidate genes for 13 agronomic traits. For example, we could identify genes (e.g. REN1, ß-1, 3-glucanase, REF6) which can help the crop tolerate temperatures up to 38oC and provide higher productivity,” says Dr Rajeev Varshney, the project leader and Research Program Director, Genetic Gains, ICRISAT.

Dr Xu Xun, CEO and President, BGI Research, China, co-leader of the project said, “BGI is very excited to work with CGIAR institutes like ICRISAT in high-end science research which could enable development of drought and heat-tolerant chickpea varieties for India and Africa. BGI has been enjoying a collaboration with ICRISAT for the past decade and we look forward to work together on many exciting projects in the years to come”.

The study established a foundation for large-scale characterization of germplasm, population genetics and crop breeding. It also helped understand domestication and post-domestication divergence of chickpea.

“This new found knowledge will enable breeders to enhance the use of diverse germplasm and candidate genes in developing improved (Climate-change ready) varieties that will contribute significantly to the increased productivity and sustainability of agricultural development in developing countries,” said Dr Peter Carberry, Director General, ICRISAT.

The study was done in close collaboration with partners from the National Agricultural Research Systems. India, for instance as the biggest consumer of pulses in the world, faces increasing production gap. This new research could take India closer towards attaining self-sufficiency in pulse production.

“This is a significant contribution to global agricultural research and these unique, scientific solutions will help mitigate issues the world is facing right now. Science is key to ongoing efforts within ICAR and ICRISAT and also the way forward for agriculture in the country,” said Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education & Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

The study also confirms that chickpea came to India from Fertile Crescent/ Mediterranean via Afghanistan and may have been introduced back to the primary centers of origin after 200 years. The new study speculates about possible introduction of chickpea to the New World directly from Central Asia or East Africa rather than the Mediterranean.

“Our study indicates Ethiopia as secondary center of diversity and also maps a migration route from Mediterranean/ Fertile Crescent to Central Asia, and in parallel from Central Asia to East Africa (Ethiopia) and South Asia (India),” Dr Varshney added.
