Five Indian films that gained international recognition

The India Saga Saga |

You know how Adipurush has made Indian cinema reach a global level but only in the wrong way? Leaving all that behind, there have been a lot of Indian movies that not only do extremely well in the homeland but also leave an impact on the international stage. Over the years there have been a plethora of movies that stood out and gained amazing international acclaim. Let us have a look at some of them:

  • Lagaan (2001)

Nominated for an Academy Award

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the 2001 epic has been one of the most celebrated Indian films to date. The movie which has a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes is also the third Indian movie that was nominated for an Academy Award. In the year 2010, the film was ranked No. 55 in Empire magazine as well. So I guess we all love it wholeheartedly.

  • The Lunchbox (2013)

Bagged the Grand Rail D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival

After a lot of efforts from Indian, German, France and US production companies, The Lunchbox, one of my favourites, was screened at International Critics Week at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival as well. The film there won the Critics Week Viewers Choice Award. In addition to that it was nominated at the British Academy Film Awards 2015 for the Film Not in the English Language.

  • Gangs Of Wasseypur (2012)

Secured four nominations at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival

Are jiya ho Bihar ke lala! Well, undoubtedly the cult classic has a big following all over India but the Bihar ke lala did truly leave his charisma abroad as well. The film received numerous positive reviews abroad. The movie secured four nominations at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival. Even the reporters in Hollywood compared it to a Tarantino-style flick.

  • Awaara (1951)

Made it to the list of 100 all-time greatest films by TIME magazine

The 1951 classic which was directed, produced and also starred Raj Kapoor focused on the socio-economic differences and their effects on individuals. The movie gained instant recognition in East Asia, the Soviet Union, Africa and the Middle East. All the reviews, positive comments and popularity led to Awaara getting included in the All-Time 100 Greatest Films by TIME magazine.

  • Devdas (2002)

Bagged BAFTA award nomination

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed film from 2002 was critical along with financial success in India. Because of this praise, India submitted the movie for the Academy Award and it was nominated for a BAFTA for best foreign language picture. In a recent list of the top 10 films of the millennium worldwide, Time Magazine named it the finest global film of 2002. In Empire magazine’s list of ‘The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema,’ it was ranked #74.

So this was our list, do tell us your favourite film that gained international recognition.

“Uniform Civil Code is a matter of concern for Hindus too,” says Uddhav Thackeray

The India Saga Saga |

As a supporter of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the former leading party of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), is now raising concerns with the BJP over its implementation, which will not only affect Hindus but also Muslims, according to news reports. The BJP and the unified Shiv Sena were on the same page about a number of crucial ideological issues, including the UCC, up until 2019, when they parted.

On Sunday, Uddhav said that “We favour the Uniform Civil Code, but those promoting it should not assume that it would only generate problems for Muslims; it will also cause problems for Hindus, and numerous questions will arise. He also said that former  chief minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar used to say that Cow slaughter must be prohibited from Kashmir to Kanyakumari as there is no ban on cow slaughter.”

In an election year, the sensitive topic was brought up once again when the Law Commission of India requested suggestions from civic and religious organisations last week regarding the Uniform Civil Code. The Congress and other opposition parties have criticised the action as the Centre’s “desperation” to press forward with its polarising agenda, despite the Bharatiya Janata Party’s defence of it.

Member of Parliament and congress’ general secretary for communication Jairam Ramesh, issued a statement in which he said that the Law Commission had not provided any justifications for revisiting the issue beyond general statements like “the relevance and importance of the subject” and “various court orders.” He also said, “This new attempt shows the Modi government’s desperate search for a legal defence for its ongoing policy of divisiveness and distraction from its evident failures.

The Uniform Civil Code is not a “political instrumentality” that should be hastily implemented, according to the former ally of the BJP, Janata Dal (United). Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, avoided answering a question from reporters on Monday by referencing the intense heat wave engulfing the region.

The Trinamool Congress charged that the Centre was ‘desperately’ promoting divisive politics. “When you are unable to complete jobs. when the price surge is beyond your control. When the social fabric is torn. When you break every promise you made. In your desperation, all you can do is fuel the fire with your bitterly divisive politics before 2024.” PTI cited TMC MP Derek O’Brien as saying, “Uniform Civil Code.”

No Nut November:- Reasons why NNN is the Wackiest Sex-related Social Media Challenge of All Time

The India Saga Saga |

This is the generation that largely likes to call themselves as either Millennials or Gen Z and they have their own way of carrying forward a trend. Nowadays, numerous social media challenges and trends are creating a buzz among the people. Ice-bucket Challenge, No Shave November, Sober October and No Nut November are some of the challenges/trends that have gained huge popularity in recent years with a large number of people across the globe practising/participating in these trends. Among some of the aforementioned trends, No Nut November is the one which has been a talk of the town since the term was coined in 2010. Whether one likes to admit it or not, No Nut November is a trend which is not an easy nut to crack (pun-intended).

For starters and people who are not familiar with what actually is No Nut November, we will decode it for you.

What is No Nut November?

Addressing the elephant in the room and talking straight to the point, NNN is basically an yearly internet challenge for males to abstain from sexual activities during the 2nd last month of the year, November. It originated in 2010 and rapidly grew in popularity on social media during and post 2017.

When did the Challenge NNN actually start?

As per several unconfirmed internet sources, the term No Nut November was coined in the year 2010.

Rules to be followed under No Nut November challenge

There are several laid rules for a person who is willing to take up the NNN Challenge. These so-called stringent rules are as per Urban Dictionary and here they are:-

  • You cannot have sex, masturbate, or nut in any way, shape or form
  • Watching pornography and having boners are allowed, but you can’t nut
  • You are only allowed one wet dream. If you have more than one, then consider yourself out.
  • You do not have 3 strikes; you only have one shot at it. If you miss it, you’re out.
  • If you have passed the month with a total of 0 nuts, you are a victor and you shall qualify for Destroy Dick December (Not Recommended)
  • Look, man, just don’t nut in 30 days.

Reasons why No Nut November is the Wackiest Sex-related Social Media Challenge of All Time

There is no doubt that some of the youngsters would find this challenge a way to prove their determination and will power to control their sexual urge. However, there are people who might find the No Nut November challenge one of the most ‘Wackiest’ Sex-related Social Media Challenge of all time! Yes, you heard it right ‘Wackiest’ and you might be wondering why is this so? “No Nut November” is an internet phenomenon and a voluntary challenge where participants pledge to abstain from ejaculating (commonly referred to as “nutting”) for the entire month of November. While some people find it amusing or entertaining, others may view it as a humorous and lighthearted way to promote self-control and discipline. However, it is important to note that it is not a universally accepted or recognized concept, and its origins are rooted in online communities rather than any formal organisation or scientific research.

The notion of abstaining from sexual activities for a month can be seen as a personal challenge or an expression of self-control, but it is not a medically or scientifically endorsed practice. Many medical professionals actually recommend regular sexual activity as part of a healthy lifestyle, as it can have numerous physical and psychological benefits.

The idea of “No Nut November” has gained attention primarily through social media and online communities, where people engage in humorous discussions, memes, and challenges related to the concept. However, it’s essential to remember that engaging in sexual activities is a personal choice, and individuals should always prioritise their own well-being, pleasure, and consent.

Ultimately, whether one finds “No Nut November” to be wacky or not is subjective, and opinions on the matter may vary greatly.

How is Navratri Celebrated? Worshipping Goddess Durga:

To worship Goddess Durga during Navratri, one must first purify their mind, body, and soul. Devotees often observe fasts and abstain from consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and other impure substances. The primary focus is on maintaining a pious and disciplined lifestyle during this period.

1. Establishing the Kalash: A sacred pot, known as the Kalash, is placed symbolically to invite the goddess’s presence. It is filled with holy water and adorned with fresh flowers and leaves.

2. Performing Aarti: Aarti, a ritual of waving a lamp in front of the deity, is an essential aspect of Navratri worship. It involves singing hymns and praising the goddess’s divine attributes, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of bells and drums.

3. Garba and Dandiya Raas: These vibrant and energetic folk dances are an integral part of Navratri celebrations. Devotees form circles and dance gracefully around an idol of the goddess, accompanied by rhythmic music. Dandiya Raas involves the use of decorated sticks, adding to the festive spirit.

4. Fasting and Prayers: Many devotees observe fasts during Navratri, consuming only certain foods like fruits, milk, and specific grains. Importance of Dussehra or Navratri

Navratri literally translates to “nine nights” in Sanskrit, where “nava” means nine and “ratri” denotes night. It is believed that during these nine nights, the divine power of Goddess Durga manifests in various forms to bless her devotees and eradicate evil forces. Each night represents a different aspect of the goddess, starting with Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and concluding with Siddhidatri.

Navratri is a time of spiritual rejuvenation, introspection, and seeking the blessings of the divine mother. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Devotees observe fasts, engage in prayer, perform rituals, and participate in cultural activities to celebrate this festival.

Ahead of PM Modi’s visit to the USA, NASA wants India to join the space Lunar mission

The India Saga Saga |

Days ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s trip to the US from June 21 to 25, NASA officials are talking more and more about including India in the Artemis Accords, an American-led initiative to send people back to the Moon by 2025 with the ultimate goal of advancing space exploration to Mars and beyond.

A US space specialist predicted that when PM Modi and US President Joe Biden met at the White House next week, collaboration in space would be one of the main topics of conversation. Bhavya Lal, the assistant administrator for technology, policy, and strategy in the office of the NASA Administrator, recently expressed his desire that India would join the other 25 nations that have signed the Artemis Accords as the 26th.

Bhavya Lal, who completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees in nuclear engineering at MIT after completing her secondary education in Delhi, formerly held the position of acting chief technologist for NASA. According to her, the Artemis programme needs more collaboration between the US and India.

The US began its Artemis programme in November 2022 by sending the unmanned Orion spacecraft towards the Moon and returning it to Earth safely as a lead-up to a manned lunar mission. Intriguingly, India and the US decided earlier this year to enhance space collaboration in a number of sectors, including human space exploration and commercial space partnership, under the ‘Initiative on Critical and emerging technology’ (ICET) banner.

Isro’s space exploration initiatives would benefit greatly if Modi and Biden discussed India’s participation in NASA’s Artemis mission and cooperation in human space exploration. In a few weeks, India will also launch its Chandrayaan-3 mission and Aditya L-1 Sun mission.

The world’s most costly earth observation satellite programme, the $1.5 billion NISAR satellite project, has been a joint effort between Isro and NASA up to this point. When it is launched next year, it will record how the Earth’s changing ecosystems, dynamic surfaces, and ice sheet collapses. NASA had also launched its payload to the Moon aboard Chandrayaan-1, an Indian spacecraft that discovered the Moon’s first signs of water.

SP’s preparation for 2024 elections: West-centric plans, temple rush, and abolishment of social evils

The India Saga Saga |

The Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP), which has suffered defeats in four straight elections despite establishing fresh alliances, is carefully preparing for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, making pilgrimages to holy sites.

Recently, the party held training camps in Lakhimpur and Sitapur where Akhilesh and all other key officials gave speeches to the crowd in order to convey the party’s message to its members. The SP leader offered aarti at Naimisharanya, a well-known Hindu pilgrimage in the Sitapur district, and made fun of the governing BJP, which frequently accuses the SP of towing a “soft Hindutva” line.

“Hum bahut soft hain hum log pehle se. Zaroorat bas ab hard hone ki hai. Yeh soft ka mamla chalne wala nahin hai (We needed to become hard since we were already so soft. This gentleness won’t help),” Akhilesh declared.

Since SP officials have avoided going to the Ayodhya Ram temple while it is still being built, it appears that the party is also prepared to embrace the Hindu God totally. Shivpal Singh Yadav, general secretary of the SP, presented a bronze statue of Ram on Saturday at Ramlila Tiraha in Jaswant Nagar, his assembly district in the Etawah district. “Ram sabke hain (Ram belongs to all),” stated Shivpal during the aarti of the idol that Jaswant Nagar Palika had installed.

After a long absence, SP is again hosting training camps for its employees. Akhilesh’s Lok Jagran Yatra will pass through each of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh where these camps will be organised.

Akhilesh launched the Lok Jagran Yatra earlier this month from Lakhimpur with the slogans of “samajik nyay” and “jaatiya jan ganana” (social justice and caste census), focusing on OBC voters. This was very similar to the “Samajwadi Vijay Yatra” he held prior to the 2022 Assembly elections, in which the SP significantly increased its tally.

Akhilesh called for an end to groupthink during a gathering of employees on Thursday at the SP state headquarters in Lucknow. He advised them to prepare for the elections with “ek jutata, nishtha, imaandari (unity, dedication and honesty).

It has finished compiling data on the performance of MPs from competing parties on each seat as part of its poll strategy of constituency-specific plans, and it has gotten input from its district presidents on the strengths and weaknesses of its organisational structure.

To discuss each seat, Akhilesh personally meets with district organisational units, but for the first time, there are also specific in-charges for each Lok Sabha constituency. Party officials said that inactive employees had been eliminated and new “zonal units” had been established.

“Names of SP supporters were discovered to be missing from electoral records in previous elections, including by-elections in which the SP lost to the BJP. To beat the SP, the BJP abused its authority. The responsible parties shall monitor changes to the electoral rolls to make sure that all eligible voters are added to the list,” a party leader said.

The SP ran in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in coalition with the BSP and the Rashtriya Lok Dal. The SP had only gained five seats, compared to the BSP’s ten. Due to recent by-election losses to the BJP in Rampur and Azamgarh, the SP currently only has three MPs in the Lok Sabha.

Adipurush Day 3: Prabhas’ movie tops the Pathaan record with worldwide opening weekend, enters INR 340 crore club

The India Saga Saga |

Om Raut’s epic Adipurush made an astonishing Rs 340 crore at the global box office during its debut weekend, despite controversy and a decision to rewrite a few of its dialogues. On June 16, the movie starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon was released, and reviews were largely negative. The film’s box office performance hasn’t been hurt by the trolling, though. “Adipurush continues to captivate audiences across generations, crossing an astounding 340 crores on the opening weekend at the box office,” the film’s producers T-Series said in a statement about the day three box office take for the movie.

After Pathaan, Adipurush is the second movie this year to earn Rs 300 crore in just three days. The Prabhas-starring film has made Rs 340 crore, surpassing Pathaan’s first-weekend earnings of Rs 313 crore. The box office earnings were revealed in the midst of the film’s intense reaction.

Additionally, the producers declared that they will be eliminating key dialogues that caused outrage in several regions of India. The film’s director Raut and dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir Shukla spoke out when it was criticised for demeaning the epic Ramayan. In a tweet, Shukla said that despite having written more than 4000 lines for Adipurush, feelings had been wounded “because of five lines.”

“I can offer innumerable justifications for my dialogues, but they won’t lessen your suffering. The producer-director of the movie and I have decided to change some of the dialogues that are hurting you and add them to the movie this week.” He further wrote, “May Shri Ram Bless you all. Adipurush is not the Ramayan, but it was inspired by the epic, he has previously stated.

T Series also issued a statement that read, “Team Adipurush Values the Input of the Public and the Audience, Revamps Dialogues for a Unifying Film Experience. The discussions are being changed with the CBFC’s input and counsel.

Adipurush’s visual effects have also drawn criticism. After the first look of the movie was released, the team had to put the project on hold while they addressed issues from the audience in the department. Prabhas plays Raghava in the epic Ramayana-inspired movie, which also stars Kriti Sanon as Janaki and Saif Ali Khan as Ravana. The film also features Sunny Singh and Devdatta Nage as Lakshman and Hanuman, respectively, and has a stated budget of Rs 500 crore.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force, was fatally shot inside Canadian Gurdwara

The India Saga Saga |

When Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, visited India in 2018, Captain Amarinder Singh, the then-chief minister of Punjab, sent him a list of wanted people that included Hardeep Singh Nijjar

On Sunday night in Canada’s Surrey, two unidentified youngsters shot and killed Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the leader of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib and the commander of the Khalistan Tiger Force.

Nijjar, 46, a native of the Jalandhar village of Bhar Singh Pura, was widely known, according to the Union government, for his active involvement in operationalizing, connecting with, training, and paying members of the Khalistan Tiger Force. Additionally, he was accused of a brutal crime. He was charged in an investigation launched by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He recently travelled to Australia to participate in the referendum voting and was a member of Sikh for Justice.

In the course of the investigation, it was found that Nijjar had shared images and videos on social media, posted offensive information, and made statements that may be used to “spread insurrectionary imputations” through angry utterances.

A report from the NIA states that “the incriminating evidence thus gathered substantiates that he is involved in exhorting seditionary and insurrectionary imputations and also attempting to create disharmony among different communities in India.”

During Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s trip to India in 2018, the then-Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, sent him a copy of the wanted list that contained his name. A red corner notice was issued against Hardeep Singh Nijjar because he was charged in several cases that the Punjab Police had opened and were under investigation.

According to a Punjab government order in 2020, Nijjar’s native hamlet of Bhar Singapura in the Phillaur subdivision of the Jalandhar district had 11 kanals and 13.5 marlas of land taken from him. A resident remarked that although Hardeep’s parents frequently return to the area and had most recently done so before to the lockdown, his family had long ago migrated.
