A retired lieutenant general in the Indian army lamented the unrest in his home state of Manipur, a violent region in the northeast of the nation, last week.

As of now, the state is “stateless,” as L Nishikanta Singh tweeted. “Life and property can be destroyed anytime by anyone, just like in Libya, Lebanon, Nigeria, Syria, etc.”

Beginning of the Civil war 

Manipur is on the verge of a civil war, according to many, nearly two months after it was shaken by ethnic violence. Over 100 people have died and over 400 have been injured in fights between the Kuki and Meitei communities, which make up the majority. In about 350 sites, nearly 60,000 people who had been displaced had sought refuge.

A total of 40,000 security personnel, including police, paramilitaries, and army soldiers, are attempting to stop the violence. Since the violence started, only 25% of the more than 4,000 guns that mobs stole from police armouries have been voluntarily surrendered back.

Both sides of the conflict have raised their level of mistrust and accuse the security forces of being biassed. Mobs have demolished or damaged more than 200 churches and 17 temples. Local legislators’ and ministers’ homes have been attacked and set on fire. 

Normal life has been severely hampered by a nighttime curfew that is still in effect in the majority of the 16 districts, closed schools, and suspended internet services. Protesters have stopped a major route used to transport supplies. Arson and occasional killings occur. A muted response has been given to the federal government’s request for a peace council to mediate a cease-fire.

According to Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace’s Binalakshmi Nepram, this is the worst period in Manipur’s history. “Homes were burned in two days [after the unrest started], and people were lynched, burned, and tortured. In Manipur’s recent history, there has never been violence of this magnitude. 

There are 45 million people living in eight states in the troubled and secluded north-east of India, representing more than 400 different communities. It has taken years for more than a dozen peace negotiations to mediate between various parties in the area. Manipur, which is nestled along the Myanmar border, has experienced ethnic conflict before.

Future conundrum in State 

The state is immensely diverse—and deeply divided—having 33 ethnic tribes. About 40 insurgent factions reside there. In opposition to contentious anti-insurgency laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which gives the security forces the right to search and seize property, Meitei, Naga, and Kuki insurgents have conducted protracted armed campaigns, frequently targeting Indian security forces. Militias from the Meitei, Naga, and Kuki have also engaged in conflict over divergent national goals.

Romanian Authorities on Tuesday announced that the Controversial Social Media Influencer Andrew Tate has been indicted for Human Trafficking, Rape and Creation of Criminal Organsiation. The Romanian Authorities further announced the extension of house arrest of Tate’s brother, Tristan Tate who along with two of his associates were also charged. Both the brothers have been charged with serious crimes after several lengthy rounds of investigations done by DIICOT. Earlier, in December 2022, the Tate Brothers were detained at a prison, however, it was Yesterday, on June 20th, 2023, that the duo were slapped with charges of Human Trafficking, Rape and Creation of Criminal Organistaion. However, all of them have denied the serious charges levelled against them. 

It is also learnt that DIICOT (Directorate For Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism), has further put forth recommendations to confiscate the properties of the brother duo including Cars, Expensive Watches, land, other properties and Bitcoin. The 36-year-old Influencer has been placed under house arrest in Bucharest since March, along with his 34-year-old brother Tristan and two other associates, aged 32 and 28, after being charged on suspicion of human trafficking. However, recently, the Romanian officials upped the charges to the more serious crime of “human trafficking in continued form”. The Tate brothers and two of their associates were informed about the human trafficking charges on June 12, when they were summoned to Romania’s organised crime unit’s Headquarters.

Are jiya ho Bihar ke lala! Well, undoubtedly the cult classic has a big following all over India but the Bihar ke lala did truly leave his charisma abroad as well. The film received numerous positive reviews abroad. The movie secured four nominations at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival. Even the reporters in Hollywood compared it to a Tarantino-style flick.

• Awaara (1951)

Made it to the list of 100 all-time greatest films by TIME magazine

The 1951 classic which was directed, produced and also starred Raj Kapoor focused on the socio-economic differences and their effects on individuals. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed film from 2002 was critical along with financial success in India. Because of this praise, India submitted the movie for the Academy Award and it was nominated for a BAFTA for best foreign language picture. In a recent list of the top 10 films of the millennium worldwide, Time Magazine named it the finest global film of 2002. In Empire magazine’s list of ‘The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema,’ it was ranked #74.

As a supporter of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the former leading party of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), is now raising concerns with the BJP over its implementation, which will not only affect Hindus but also Muslims, according to news reports. The BJP and the unified Shiv Sena were on the same page about a number of crucial ideological issues, including the UCC, up until 2019, when they parted.

On Sunday, Uddhav said that “We favour the Uniform Civil Code, but those promoting it should not assume that it would only generate problems for Muslims; it will also cause problems for Hindus, and numerous questions will arise. He also said that former  chief minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar used to say that Cow slaughter must be prohibited from Kashmir to Kanyakumari as there is no ban on cow slaughter.” 

In an election year, the sensitive topic was brought up once again when the Law Commission of India requested suggestions from civic and religious organisations last week regarding the Uniform Civil Code. The Congress and other opposition parties have criticised the action as the Centre’s “desperation” to press forward with its polarising agenda, despite the Bharatiya Janata Party’s defence of it.

Member of Parliament and congress’ general secretary for communication Jairam Ramesh, issued a statement in which he said that the Law Commission had not provided any justifications for revisiting the issue beyond general statements like “the relevance and importance of the subject” and “various court orders.” He also said, “This new attempt shows the Modi government’s desperate search for a legal defence for its ongoing policy of divisiveness and distraction from its evident failures.

The Uniform Civil Code is not a “political instrumentality” that should be hastily implemented, according to the former ally of the BJP, Janata Dal (United). Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, avoided answering a question from reporters on Monday by referencing the intense heat wave engulfing the region.

The Trinamool Congress charged that the Centre was ‘desperately’ promoting divisive politics. “When you are unable to complete jobs. when the price surge is beyond your control. When the social fabric is torn. When you break every promise you made. In your desperation, all you can do is fuel the fire with your bitterly divisive politics before 2024.” PTI cited TMC MP Derek O’Brien as saying, “Uniform Civil Code.”

On President Joe Biden’s invitation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left India on Tuesday, June 20, for a five-day6*/trip to the United States. PM Modi is currently on his first state visit to the US since taking office in 2014.

PM Modi stated this before departing for the US: “The visit to the US would be a chance to deepen and diversify our alliance. There are many facets to India-US relations, and engagements across industries are deepening. 

Throughout his mandate, PM Modi visited the US regularly, but none of the visits were considered official state visits, which constitute the highest rank in terms of diplomatic protocol.

PM Modi has visited the US frequently since taking office in 2014 and has met with three presidents: Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. As PM Modi begins his first official state visit to the US, here is a look at some of his other journeys there.

2014

After taking office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled on a working trip at the request of former President Barack Obama. At New York’s Madison Square Garden, PM Modi was greeted with a rousing welcome by tens of thousands of Indian Americans before meeting Barack Obama for official discussions. 

2015

At the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York, Prime Minister Modi spoke to the UNGA.

2016

While PM Modi was in the US for his second official business visit in 2016, Obama and PM Modi had three bilateral meetings. Joe Biden, a former vice president, extended the invitation. Additionally, PM Modi delivered his first speech to the US Congress, where he covered a range of subjects, including terrorism, trade, economic ties, and collaboration in the military and security.

2017

PM Modi paid a visit to then-President Donald Trump at the White House during his three-day tour to the US. Furthermore, Trump invited PM Modi to the White House for a historic “working dinner.” PM Modi also spoke to the Indian diaspora at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner, Virginia. 

2019

During his visit to the US in September 2019, PM Modi spoke to the Indian-American community in Houston at an occasion called “Howdy Modi!” Approximately 50,000 people of Indian heritage from all over the US attended the event, which was hosted in Houston, Texas.
