On May 8th, 2023, Monday, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister of India said that the situation in Manipur is under control as a curfew was imposed in the violence-hit northern eastern state. He also requested the people of the state to maintain peace. During the interaction with India Today/Aaj Tak, Amit Shah gave assurance that the government of Manipur will consult all the stakeholders before taking any decision regarding the matter of Scheduled Tribe status from the community of Meitie.  

After days of violence and arson which left 54 dead, hundreds of people hospitalised, and thousands of people displaced. On May 3rd, the violence broke out in the state between Naga and Kuki tribes and the Meitie community over the needs of ST status. More than 23,000 displaced people are currently sheltering in the camps. The violence took place after the protest march organised by the Kuki tribal groups sparked clashes with the non-tribal Meitei community.

The government allowed the people to step out of their houses between 7-10 am on May 7th in Churachandpur, where the violence took place at its peak. The army of India said that no major violence was reported overnight. Almost 23,500 people are presently being provided shelter by the Indian Army. The Indian army said in a statement that 120-125 Army and Assam Rifles have been working tirelessly for the past 96 hours to quell the violence.

Mobs of people have burned buildings and cars, vandalised hotels and shops, and destroyed churches across the various districts such as Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, and Kangpokpi. The police and army personnel were deployed to take charge in the clashes. Amit Shah has cancelled all his rallies in poll-bound states in Karnataka, where the upcoming elections will be held, and is focusing on the Manipur violence. 

On May 8th, 2023, Monday, JP Nadda, the national president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that ‘The Kerala Story’ exposes a ‘new type of terrorism’ that does not use ammunition. He further added that the controversial film also exposes ‘poisonous terrorism.’ On Sunday, he attended the special screening of the film in Garuda Mall, where he was also campaigning for the upcoming Assembly polls. JP Nadda became the latest leader from his party to endorse the Adah Sharma-starrer film. 

The chief of BJP said after attending the screening “I just got to watch The Kerala Story, we know about a new type of terrorism. We have heard bullets, bombs, and automatic weapons being used for terrorism. The movie exposes a threatening type of terrorism that is without ammunition. The film successfully exposes such ‘poisonous terrorism’ as well as the conspiracy behind it.” He further added that this kind of terrorism isn’t related to any religion or state. 

Earlier, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi also said that the film ‘The Kerala Story’ based on terrorism, brings out the ugly truth of terrorism and exposes the strategies used in the formation of terrorism. The recent order from Kerala high court which mentions that the court has made serious observations on the film, as well it refused the stay of the release too. On the other hand, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan made an announcement that ‘The Kerala Story’ has been made tax-free in the state. 

As the movie exposes the conspiracy of religious conversion, love jihad, and terrorism. Adah Sharma-starer ‘The Kerala Story’ including Yogita Bihani, Sonia Bilani, and Sidhi Idnani in the key roles. The film came into notice when in its trailer it has been mentioned that from Kerala almost 32,000 girls went missing, and later they were seen as a part of the terrorist group, ISIS. After that, the movie faced controversies regarding that, then they changed the perspective and depicted the film as a story of three women from Kerala.

Well, the neutral-coloured carpet at the Met Gala which had swirls of red and blue was woven by artisans from Kerala and was designed by Tadao Ando, a Japanese architect. Neyatt by Extraweave, a Kerala-based brand took the task of turning Ando’s dream into reality. The local artists took around 60 days to make the carpets and used approx 58 rolls of carpet. The Met Carpet was made using sisal fibres and was then painted by designers in the United States.

On May 2nd, 2023, Tuesday, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India alleged that Congress’ history is about “appeasing terror and terrorism,” and the party had questioned the defence forces of the country, at the time when the air strikes and surgical strikes were carried out. The Prime Minister said that unlike Congress which had left Karnataka ‘at the mercy of terrorists’ the ruling BJP has ‘broken the back’ of terror and appeasement. 

The Prime Minister was addressing an election campaign rally in Chitradurga ahead of the upcoming elections on May 10th. Also accusing the Congress for encouraging terrorism and terror, Narendra Modi said they can never increase investments in Karnataka as well as can not create new opportunities for the youth in the state. “Karnataka’s people should never forget the Congress’ continuous history of terrorism as well as their thought process behind that. Their history is about appeasing terror and terrorists. When the Batla House incident happened in Delhi, there were tears in the eyes of Congress’ topmost leader, hearing about the news of the death of the terrorists,” PM Modi mentioned.  

He further added that when the air strikes and surgical strikes took place in India, it was Congress who raised the questions on the capability of the defence forces of the country. In the 2008 Batla House encounter in which two terrorists were gunned down by the police in their rental address in Jamia Nagar, the Prime Minister bashed Sonia Gandhi, the Congress chief and said that she had ‘tears in her eyes’ after hearing the tragic death of the terrorists.

Tillu Tajpuriya, a dreaded gangster who was attacked by the rival gang members inside the Tihar jail and later killed in Delhi. Tillu Tajpuriya, the alleged mastermind in the Rohini court shootout case in September 2021, was thrashed with iron rods by allegedly gangster Yogesh Tunda as well as his aides which leads him to death. Also, one other prisoner named Rohit was also injured in the attack.

The Police said that Tillu Tajpuriya was immediately rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Delhi, where he was declared dead directly. The DCP West district, Akshat Kaushal said “Today’s morning at around 7 am, news was received from the Delhi’s Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital regarding the two prisoners who were brought to the Hospital from Tihar jail. One of them, Tillu Tajpuriya was brought to an unconscious state, where he was later declared dead as he wasn’t responding. Rohit, the other prisoner is undergoing treatment and now is out of danger.”

Tillu Tajpuriya who was lodged in cell no.9 was attacked with an iron rod by the prisoner named Yogesh Tunda along with his gang members who was lodged in cell no.8, the police further mentioned. “Tillu Tajpuriya was charged by Yogesh alias Tunda and Deepak alias Teetar by breaking the iron grill of the ward which divided both the gangs in the same ward” , said the officials. The investigation is still going on in this incident. 

In September 2021, gangster Sunil Maan alias Tillu Tajpuriya was allegedly involved in the killing of Jitender Maan alias Gogi in a shootout inside a courtroom at Rohini Courts Complex. The two members from the rival Tillu gang are suspected as the gunmen dressed as lawyers. The shooting was the result of a rivalry of years between the Gogi’s gang and Tillu’s gang.

Met Gala Who?

So the infamous Met Gala is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City and it mostly takes place on the first Monday in May. In essence, the Costume Institute is the only wing of the Met Museum that requires to self-fund itself, and it does so magnificently through the one annual party it hosts. Only a select group of famous people from various fields are invited to the party each year, which is strictly invitation-only. The theme chosen for the year, which also serves as the theme for that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, is also the vibe according to which the guests are expected to dress up.

This time around 400 people were invited and the theme was ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,’ which is a tribute to Lagerfeld, the legendary fashion designer. He apart from his fashion line has also worked for the likes of Chanel and Fendi. As we know that the Met Gala is for raising money for the costume institute, people push the limits of fashion and creativity to slay and also bless the internet. 

How does Met Gala raise money?

Each year, the success of the Gala is supported by a number of sponsors. According to the Met, Chanel is the main sponsor this year, with support from Fendi, Condé Nast, and Lagerfeld’s own collection. The event further raises money by selling astronomically expensive tickets and tables. The NYT reported that this year’s tickets cost $50,000, with tables starting at $300,000. Big brands and fashion houses typically purchase the tables. According to the NYT, the event last year raised around  $17.4 million.

All this is fine but why is it such a big deal?

Well, the Met Gala was not always a high-profile event like it is now. It began in the year 1948 when Elenor Lambert, a fashion publicist, decided to invite New York’s high society for a fundraising dinner and the tickets were priced at just $50. Then in 1972, by inviting prominent and glitzy guests along with following the practice of annual themes, fashion columnist Diana Vreeland, who had previously worked as a consultant for the Costume Institute, helped the Gala gain recognition outside of its confines as a New York City event.

Additionally, it is believed by many that the Gala has attained its current status due to the sparkle sprinkled by Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of the fashion magazine Vogue and Global Chief Content Officer for Condé Nast. A Met Gala invitation is a highly sought-after status symbol since Wintour, who has been in charge of organising the event since 1999, personally selects the guest list, which includes the crème de la crème in the fields of fashion, politics, sports, technology, and other fields. For instance, even the designers who purchase a table may invite their own friends, but Wintour and Vogue must first approve the list. Also, Wintour is famously known for saying that she would never invite Donald Trump to the Met Gala again.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at 14 locations in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the 2022 terror funding case as well as detained one person for questioning from the Sozeith area of Srinagar, on May 2nd, 2023, Tuesday. The searches were conducted by NIA at almost 14 locations in six districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, Pulwama, Baramulla, Budgam, Anantnag, and Kathua as well as neighbouring Punjab. 

Mohammad Ramzan Bhat, the father of the suspect said, “The NIA came early in the morning at 5:30 and 6:30 am. They looked for Ishaq and took him away along with his mobile phone. He works as a labourer.” He further said that we really don’t have any links or connections with the stone pelting as well as militancy. In a follow-up operation in 2022, raids were conducted at multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir. The accused were also found indulged in spreading terror via cyberspace. Twelve suspects were detained during the time of investigation, who were in touch with the Pakistan-based handlers. 

The NIA had also conducted searches at multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir in the case which was filed based on the inputs that several proscribed terrorist outfits in the erstwhile state are spreading terrorism activities on December 23rd, 2022. The NIA had been continuously carrying out searches in Kashmir since early 2017, in connection with the alleged terror funding cases, and suicide attack cases with different agencies and questioned number of people in the past six years. 

In June last year, the NIA registered a suo motu case against OGWs (terror operatives) who were working under several pseudo names on the instructions of their commanders and handlers based in Pakistan, in June 2022. In the search operation conducted last year, the anti-terror agency seized several incriminating materials such as digital devices, and sim cards from the suspect’s home.
