Delhi rains: Orange alert issued, Waterlogging slows traffic in parts of city

The India Saga Saga |

Heavy rains pounded Delhi on Wednesday, causing major waterlogging and, as a result, traffic gridlock in numerous parts of the city since the morning. Due to considerable waterlogging on the route, the Delhi traffic police issued advice against traffic obstruction on the Azad Market Subway heading towards Pratap Nagar.

Due to waterlogging, the Zakhira underpass was also closed, and traffic police advised taking an alternate route from Anand Parbat/Roshanara Road. Due to the rains, traffic on Minto Road also slowed.

The rain has been falling steadily since early Wednesday morning, with no indications of stopping anytime soon. Heavy rains battered numerous sections of Delhi earlier on Tuesday, triggering flooding and disrupting vehicular travel in the city and surrounding areas. A section of the Delhi-Agra railway track caved in due to heavy rains on Tuesday, causing delays in both road and train traffic. According to ANI, a culvert washed away, resulting in the construction of a 20-foot-deep trench, which halted the transit of at least 15 trains.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange signal for the national capital due to the heavy rainfall.

Earlier, the weather department predicted thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains in the parts of the National Capital Region. “Thunderstorms with moderate to heavy intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of isolated places of Delhi, NCR- Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, Tosham, Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Narnaul, Mahendargarh, Kosali during next 2 hours,” IMD said in Tweet.

Rain is expected to occur in Delhi from September 1 to 4. The national capital received 144.7 millimetres of rain from August 1 to August 30. According to the IMD’s rainfall figures, this is about 31% less than the typical of 209.4 mm for the month.

Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Revamp: Martys Insulted says Rahul Gandhi, Amrinder Singh contradicts

The India Saga Saga |

Criticising the renovation of Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab, Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday lashed out at the government. However, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh praised the new revamped look.

Captain, praising the new look of the historical Jallianwala Bagh said “It looks very nice.” He further said “I was a part of the inauguration function of the newly renovated Jallianwala Bagh when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it open for the public. There was a laser show too. I felt they needed to repair the walls which had developed cracks. The renovation looks nice to me.”

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had called the move to renovate the Jallianwala Bagh as an insult to all the Martys. Taking to his twitter handle, Rahul, in Hindi tweeted “Such an insult to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh can only be done by those people who don’t understand the meaning of martyrdom. I am a son of a martyr and I will not tolerate the insult of martyrs at any cost, we are against this indecent cruelty.”

The Prime Minister on Saturday opened the renovated complex, saying it is the country’s duty to protect its history. The PM further added that horrors like the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the partition speak of the sacrifices made for India’s freedom and should not be forgotten.

However, the government’s move drew a lot of outrage and criticism from several political leaders and historians. CPM’s Sitaram Yechury said “Only those people who stayed away from the epic freedom struggle can scandalise this”. Notable historian and scholar S Irfan Habib said “This is corporatisation of monuments, where they end up as modern structures, losing their rich heritage value. These memorials should be taken care of without meddling with the flavours of the period they represent.”

However, the netizens were however divided in their opinions with some backing the move calling it much needed while some criticizing it by calling it a distortion of history in the name of renovation.

A whole lot of leaders from the grand old party joined Rahul Gandhi in criticizing the move by the Modi led government to renovate the Jallianwala Bagh. These included Gaurav Gogoi, Jaiveer Shergill and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal. However, with Captain taking a different stand from the party line, this certainly has raised eyebrows in the power corridors as this comes at a time when Amrinder Singh is facing revolts within his own party in the poll bound Punjab.

Taliban assists in evacuating the US troops from Kabul airport

The India Saga Saga |

It is reportedly being said that the USA has secret marshalling with Taliban which led to the evacuation of the US troops and citizens from Afghanistan. In one of the reports CNN said that this involved setting up a “secret gate” at the airport and establishing “call centers” to guide Americans through the evacuation process.

After the constant conflict of 20 years in a row, the US states finally abandoned the ground of Afghanistan and returned to their nation. All the American citizens and troops left Afghanistan on 31 August, which arose many questions on Joe Biden’s decision. The most astonishing part which the world witnessed is that the evacuation process was aided by none other than the Taliban, which seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, after the US military allegedly negotiated a secret arrangement with the militant group.

The security arrangement with the Taliban was not made public due to the threat of Islamic State-Khorasan, a common enemy of both the US and the Taliban.

The secret rescue operations were conducted by the special operations forces, which was confirmed by the Commander of US Central Command General Frank McKenzie at a Monday press conference. The commander said these forces helped evacuate more than 1,000 US citizens and more than 2,000 Afghans “via phone calls, vectors, and escorting”

Indian Navy strikes deal with BEL, to procure indigenous modern anti-drone system

The India Saga Saga |

The Indian Navy on Tuesday sealed a deal with the giant aerospace and defence electronic company- Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). Bengaluru-based BEL will manufacture an indigenously developed anti-drone system for all the three armed forces- Indian Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. It will be the first locally produced Naval Anti-Drone System (NADS) that would have both hard kill as well as soft kill capabilities.

The ministry of defence in a statement said that BEL will further sign similar contracts with the Army as well as the Indian Air Force. The ministry in a press release also said that “The NADS has the capabilities to instantly detect and jam micro drones and use a laser-based kill mechanism to eliminate the target. It will be an effective all-encompassing counter to the increased drone threat to strategic naval installations.”

The deal comes at the backdrop of the attack in which small drones were used to target the Jammu and Kashmir Air Force Station on June 27. It was the first-ever offensive use of drones to target the facility of the Indian Armed Force. The attack raised serious security concerns for the country as explosives were dropped at the airbase using aerial vehicles.

The Naval Anti-Drone System has been developed and manufactured by Bharat Electronic Limited in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It will be the first indigenous anti- drone system to be inducted in the Indian Armed Forces. The new system has basically two versions- static and mobile versions. As per the Defence Ministry, both the newly developed NADS will be handed over to the Indian Navy within a short period of time.

Electronic and Radar Development Establishment situated in Bengaluru, the Defense Electronic Research Laboratory & Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences in Hyderabad and Instruments Research and Development Establishment located in Dehradun are the DRDO laboratories that were involved in the entire project. While BEL units situated in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Machilipatanam and Pune were closely working on the project alongside the Indian Navy.

The first time that this new anti-drone system was tested was when it was deployed for providing security cover on the occasion of Republic Day this year and later during the Prime Minister’s Independence Day speech to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort located in the National Capital.

New Supreme Court judges, including 3 women, to take oath today

The India Saga Saga |

Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana will administer the oath of office to nine new Supreme Court judges on Tuesday, including three women. Justice Vikram Nath, Justice BV Nagarathna, and Justice PS Narasimha are three of the nine new judges in line to become India’s chief justice. After the nine new justices are sworn in, the Supreme Court’s strength will rise to 33, including the Chief Justice, out of a sanctioned strength of 34.

This will be the first time in the Supreme Court’s history that nine judges will take the oath of office at the same time. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the swearing-in event will be held in the auditorium of the Supreme Court’s extra building complex. New judges usually take the oath of office in the courtroom of the Chief Justice of the United States.

On August 17, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended these nine judges for appointment as Supreme Court judges. The warrants for their appointment as top court judges were then signed by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Since its foundation, the Supreme Court has had extremely few female judges, with only eight appointed in the last 71 years, beginning with M Fathima Beevi in 1989. After her promotion on August 7, 2018, Justice Indira Banerjee became the supreme court’s lone female judge.

Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65, while high court judges retire at the age of 62.

Here are the new nine judges to take oath:

1. Justice Vikram Nath: After sitting top court judge Justice Surya Kant retires in February 2027, Justice Nath, who was the chief justice of the Gujarat High Court, is in line to become the CJI. He would be succeeded by Justice Nagarathna, who would serve as the head of the judiciary for more than a month.

2. Justice BV Nagarathna: Justice Nagarathna was a high court judge in Karnataka. In September 2027, Justice Nagarathna will become the first woman Chief Justice of India. Justice Nagarathna, the daughter of former Chief Justice of India ES Venkataramiah, was born on October 30, 1962.

3. Justice PS Narasimha: Justice Narasimha was a former additional solicitor general and a senior advocate. Justice Narasimha would take over as CJI from Justice Nagarathna for a period of more than six months.

4. Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka (Chairman of the Karnataka High Court),

5. Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari: Justice Maheshwari was the Sikkim High Court’s chief justice.

6. Justice Hima Kohli: Justice Kohli was the Telangana High Court’s chief justice.

7. Justice CT Ravikumar: Justice Ravikumar was a high court judge in Kerala.

Defence Minister: India won’t allow Chinese PLA’s unilateral action on LAC

The India Saga Saga |

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that India wants a solution to the border dispute with China through dialogue. He emphasized that the government would not allow the sanctity of borders to be violated. “The Modi government has made it clear to the forces that any unilateral action on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) should not be ignored”, he said.

The defence minister said that there have been “perception differences” on the border with China. “Despite this, there are some agreements, protocols which the armies of both countries follow to conduct patrols.” Referring to the clashes in eastern Ladakh last year, Singh said Chinese forces had ignored the “agreed protocols.”

Singh was delivering virtually the third Balramji Dass Tandon Memorial Lecture organized by Panjab University on the issue of national security.

In the first deadly clash in the border area in nearly five decades, 20 Indian soldiers were killed on June 15 last year in the Galwan Valley in fierce hand-to-hand combat with Chinese troops, triggering a large deployment of troops and heavy weaponry by both armies at the friction points in eastern Ladakh.

In February, China officially acknowledged that five Chinese military officers and soldiers were killed in the clashes with the Indian Army though it is widely believed that the death toll was higher.

Today, Rajnath Singh said the Army is trained to press the trigger on seeing the movement of the enemy, but the Indian Army has shown both courage and restraint while working with great maturity. India has learned a lot from the 1962 war against China, he added.

On improving infrastructure, he said that the Atal Tunnel project in Rohtang, which was on hold for a long time, was completed by the Modi government. “This tunnel has strategic importance,” he said.

Yogi led BJP Gov in UP orders complete ban on the sale of liquor & meat in Mathura

The India Saga Saga |

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Monday ordered a complete ban on the sale of liquor and meat in the holy city of Mathura. The authorities are further instructed to make a comprehensive plan for the implementation of the order. The officials are directed to engage with people who are involved in the business and take them on board while implementing the order.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was attending a Krishnotsav program in the state capital where he suggested that those people who are involved in the liquor and meat business may take up selling milk in order to revive the historical significance and glory of the ancient city of Mathura.

Yogi also prayed to Lord Krishna to eliminate the deadly Coronavirus.

The Chief Minister speaking at the program on the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami also said, “We will ensure that every effort is made to revamp the Brij Bhumi and that there won’t be any shortage of funds.  We are focused on developing the region through a blend of updated modern technologies and cultural & spiritual heritage.” He further added that all our places of faith that were neglected for a long time are being revived now.

The event was also attended by cabinet ministers Laxmi Narain Chaudhary and Shrikant Sharma.

Taking the opportunity of the occasion, Yogi also lashed out at the opposition leaders without particularly naming anyone. He said “Those leaders who were earlier hesitant and afraid to go to temples for the fear of being called communal are now saying Lord Ram is mine, Krishna is also mine. It was a norm to impose restrictions on Hindu festivals during the time of their government but now there are no such restrictions.”

With this new order, the long-pending demand of saints and public representatives of Mathura has been fulfilled by the Yogi government.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM further added that it is because of him that the country has got an all-new direction and the nation is moving forward.
