Fashion Designer Mithi Kalra aims at expansion, eyes Overseas Market

The India Saga Saga |

A design by designer Mithi Kalra

According to Market Research, The Indian textile industry is estimated to be around 108 billion dollars and expected to reach 223 billion dollars by 2021. The industry employs over 45 million people directly to 60 million people indirectly, thus making an aim to increase the employment in the industry. Fashion Designer Mithi Kalra, who is a celebrated name in the industry, has been working towards this tangent for a decade now.

She is famous for creating beautiful amalgamations by choosing homegrown fabrics with different forms of paintings of India. For her Fashion is an expression of deep-rooted culture, ethnicity and sustainability. Known for her eccentric designs, fabrics and colour sensibilities, the label has dressed many famous Bollywood celebrities including Sonali Kulkarni, Pooja Sawant, and many more.

Mithi Kalra launched her eponymous brand in 2012 after graduating from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), with a studio in Noida, along with a team of seven. Since then, Mithi has been selling via her website offline store and social media channels like Facebook and Instagram named House of Mithi Kalra. With her vast clientele across the countries and globally, Kalra has displayed her designs at prominent shows like India Runway Week and done exhibitions in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities.

“My business grew at a rate of 70 percent last year even during the time of COVID-19, as people started shopping online at a wider scale. Despite selling via Facebook and Instagram, I have also launched my website, mithikalra.com, last month due to the positive response from the audience. My collection range begins at Rs 5,000 and goes upto Rs 4 lakhs,” Mithi shares.

She says that the major 50 percent of revenue comes from offline studio sales whereas 20 percent of revenue comes from online sales on social media.

Her overseas clientele is scattered in Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai, which are her biggest source of revenue. While her collection in India is scattered in major cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Gujarat, Kolkata, Bangalore and Pune.

“I am also planning to open a store in Udaipur, as a lot of my clientele resides there and have been purchasing from me. I also plan to tap into Men’s wear this year and am launching my own real jewellery collection,” Mithi says.

Started her design house in 2015, as “House of Mithi Kalra”, her first collection was an intricate concoction of Madhubani Paintings on dresses based on Disney Princess. Mithi travelled a lot and aimed at reaching the craftsmen for the Madhubani Paintings directly, as she feels that the role of middlemen often takes away the wages that the weavers can earn,” The role of the craftsman is underrated and there should be efforts from the Fashion Industry to help them grow equally. Kalra feels that this is a massive step in growing the textile industry towards the right direction,” she reiterates.

Aiming for the same success in the future, Mithi says, “We plan to introduce different forms of art in our collection and take such arts globally. The first collection that revolved around Madhubani Paintings that is practiced in Bihar and done by hands, this was received well by critics and our customers in India and especially Overseas. We aim to introduce new concepts with different forms of paintings in our designs,”

In future, she aims at introducing Bridal Collection on Sustainable Fabrics,“Today, bridal wear has a vast spectrum, it not only includes those heavily embroidered lehengas and embellished sarees but it has a good mix of Rich Anarkalis with Ethnic Skirts, our new collection includes subtle yet rich blouses paired with heavy skirts, making it a complete look of home-grown Lehengas,” she concludes.

The winning streak continues for young Indian poet Pragya Gogoi

The India Saga Saga |

She might be just 20, but this talented, young lady is already making her mark in the field of contemporary Indian literature, winning hearts and breaking records. Adding another feather to her cap, Pragya’s debut book “Whispers of a Nyctophile” won the Best Poetry Book Award in a recently concluded National Book Awards Ceremony, the results of which were declared on the night of 10th May,2021. From the final 16 nominees, Pragya’s beautiful book grabbed the top spot, adding another trophy to her cabinet. “I am really happy with the love and appreciation pouring in for my book. Honestly, I never thought my book would come this far and get nominated for awards but it feels beyond overwhelming to see my work being honoured at the National level multiple times. For me, it’s not the awards that matter, but the confidence and joy that comes with every win, motivating me to dedicate myself towards my art with greater enthusiasm”, said Pragya after her win.

The budding writer, already ecstatic on being recently selected to the list of 100 Inspiring Authors of India, calls this award a cherry on the cake. She shares that the happiest moment in her literary journey was when she woke up one day to find her book being picked up by leading National Newspaper Hindustan Times to be listed among 13 most impactful reads in Indian Literature. “I was crying happy tears! I couldn’t believe my eyes; it was huge for me”, the young author said.  The joy only accelerated when OUTLOOK India and THE WEEK magazine picked up her book to their 10 Must-Read Recommendations list too.

Pragya started writing when she was in the third standard with no initial plans of pursuing a career in literature. However, as years rolled by, her write ups received immense appreciation from people who encouraged her to write books. It was in high school that she took up writing seriously, weaving tiny dreams of being a published author one day. Today, fulfilling her dream in a beautiful way, she describes how taking up engineering almost put an end to her dream. “It was difficult initially. I hardly had time to devote to literature with the piles of unceasing assignments, projects, exams and college work in a city so far away from home. I was also working in the technical department of my College Robotics team, where I designed and manufactured robots with my team for National and International Competitions, leaving me with no time to explore literature. So, I decided to bury my dreams and give up writing forever. But then, I met an angel in human form who was adamant that I shouldn’t give up a dream I had been weaving for so long when I actually had the calibre. The support, encouragement and strength from this person was so immense that I became more confident than ever to make a comeback and live my dreams no matter what. Today, I can only thank this person from the bottom of my heart for waking up the dead writer inside me because now that I think of it, every little achievement I have had is because of this comeback that he made possible. I think every artist needs an inspiration and a motivation factor for the successful continuation of their art and this person will always remain my biggest strength and inspiration”, says Pragya.

It needs no introduction that she created history by becoming the youngest Indian author to write a best-selling debut book in a span of just 3 days. On the work front, Pragya has already co-authored 10 poetry books besides her own debut and is actively writing for various magazines and media. She is writing her next 2 books out of which one is a romantic thriller and the other is her second volume of poems. While she is really excited about launching her next books, she is taking things slow owing to academics, being a pre-final year student and announced that her books would be released post her graduation. One can easily surmise that Pragya is definitely going to create a big name for herself in the Indian poetry world and is one of the most talented, contemporary Indian poets currently.

Fitness Model Jase Stevens inspires millennials with his dedication

The India Saga Saga |

Embarking on a journey to merge goals with perseverance and passion with consistency to excel is the quality of achievers. The visionary man in frame today, Jade Stevens is one such achiever who is trudging his way with long term hardwork to reign his career as a renowned bodybuilder.

Coming from Toronto, Canada, is the story of Jase who has carved his name in the International bodybuilding industry, but the most special aspect about this real-life story is the relentless hustle that Jase has put towards making his passions come alive.

Having begun his journey when he was 21 years old, James started hitting the gym and worked on his physique after years of experimenting with various physical activities in high school.

He pushed himself to improve his diet and exercise, and he spent nearly all of his time learning everything he could about proper training and nutrition. He wanted to start competing, but he didn’t have the financial means to do so. For the same reason, he decided to get a job and began working as a signals and communication technician for the Canadian National Railway.

Jase had to move around a lot to find new gyms as part of his bodybuilding journey. He not only had to be on the go all of the time, but he also had to keep track of his meals, which seemed impossible considering that he was in charge of railway communications, signaling, and equipment maintenance.

He explained his difficulties by saying that he would bring culinary equipment with him wherever they went, such as hot plates, portable BBQs, and Tupperware. He’d either go grocery shopping after work or buy food, put it in a cooler, and transport it to the city while working.

“During this journey, I got into the best form of my life, and I came in a very close second behind my friend Dylan Thomas,” Jase remarked of his own physique.

The hurdles kept him going forward, and he persevered in the face of adversity, leading to an amazing achievement. He developed a stage-ready physique over the course of four years of consistent hard effort.

He placed 6th in the Caribbean Grand Prix Pro in the area of Men’s Physique Class C three years ago and qualified in Men’s Physique Class D, taking 7th place, among other accomplishments.

He underwent a remarkable metamorphosis as a result of his unwavering mindset, placing highly in a number of bodybuilding competitions. He was his own most powerful source of motivation for conquering obstacles.

According to Jase Stevens, “building your ultimate body is a long game, there’s no hurrying it, and there’s no way around putting in the hard effort year after year.”

Dr Deepak Shokeen- from a doctor to a social entrepreneur

The India Saga Saga |

In early March this year, 25-year-old Dr Deepak Shokeen was waiting for the pandemic to end so that he could restart the admission process for his MD. Three months later, he has decided to do something that he always wanted to do, set up a non-profit hospital in Gurugram to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare.
“The last two months have altered the course of my life. The only thing that matters is how many lives can we save if there is ever going to be third wave of the COVID pandemic,” he said. Deepak has been socially active since childhood and commitment to service inspired him to take up a career in medicine.

He wanted to help, and the second wave gave him the reason and opportunity to act. “I learned Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda had started helping people in distress during the pandemic and I joined Team Deepender and soon I started getting calls for help,” he said.

The last two months have been emotionally very disturbing and rewarding. “When you are a doctor and treating a patient, you are dealing with it professionally but when you are a volunteer, you have a different perspective. A doctor does his job to the best of his ability but as a volunteer, you have little control but get emotionally invested,” he explains.
Narrating a case, he says people reach out in hope that you would be able to provide some help. “Imagine that you get a distress call from a son who has a mother who needs to go through dialysis, but the medical system is so overwhelmed that it cannot take a non-COVID patient. “I reached out to my friends, seniors and other doctors that I knew and after hours of effort, we were able to help them get a hospital. She went through dialysis and managed to get out of a life-threating situation. The son called back and was crying and thanking us for the help,” he said.

Helping others brings emotional rewards but there have also been occasions where we have not been able to save patients because either the medicine, they were seeking was not available or they had come to us too late. For me, these 40-odd days have been life changing,” he stated.

Deepak says the pandemic has made the entire medical fraternity more aware of their responsibilities towards society and humanity. “People have been working for days non-stop and though doctors tend to stop themselves from getting too emotionally engaged in a situation but all my friends say that every death does weigh on them. There has been large number of people who have died in their 30s, leaving behind little children and these things impact everyone,” he added.

He now wants to take this work forward and plans to open a not-for-profit hospital for the economically underprivileged. “We are blessed to have the opportunities because of our families gave us good education but there are many who are remain entrapped in poverty. They come to cities in search of a better life but are always living on the margins. “Our biggest job is to provide quality healthcare to these people with the lowest out-of-pocket expenses,” he said.

Centre: WhatsApp users won’t be affected, legal battle over privacy

The India Saga Saga |

The Centre underlined on Wednesday that the normal operation of Whatsapp would not be harmed as a result of the steps proposed by the information technology ministry if the platform fails to comply with the new standards, which require the first author of a message to be recognised if required.

The ministry particularly highlighted WhatsApp in its appeal to the Centre’s new laws at the Delhi high court, claiming that they breach the right to privacy and the company’s end-to-end encryption policy. This last-minute challenge, according to the administration, was a clear act of disobedience.

The ministry stated that the phrase that caused difficulty for WhatsApp is not the first step. When all other options have failed, only this option will be pursued through a legally sanctioned process.

According to the Centre, penalising those who initiate mischief that leads to crimes such as rape is in the public interest. The government said, “ “We cannot deny as to how in cases of mob lynching and riots etc. repeated WhatsApp messages are circulated and recirculated whose content are already in the public domain. Hence the role of who originated is very important.”

The discussion over whether or not encryption would be maintained is misdirected, according to the government. WhatsApp should develop a technical solution, like as encryption, to ensure that privacy is respected while the government may get critical information to ensure public order and national security.

None of India’s planned measures would have any effect on WhatsApp’s normal operation, and there would be no influence on ordinary users, according to the government.
