Praveen Sinha explains how to sail through uncertainties

The India Saga Saga |

Amid the pandemic, businesses around the world are surrounded by a whole new set of uncertainties. Co-Founder of Jabong and serial entrepreneur talks about how to sail through such difficult times .

Praveen Sinha, as the co-founder and ex-MD of one of India’s first e-commerce platforms, navigated Jabong through an arduous journey to immense success. Today, as an angel investor, he has been actively guiding startups to not only survive these testing times but also maneuvering them towards triumph.

Perhaps, the spread of coronavirus has almost impacted every business cutting across international boundaries to unprecedented levels. In India, multiples waves of Covid-19, the imposition of series of lockdowns, and restriction on movements have put several industries on the brink of collapse, leaving only a few exceptions.

Startups, especially at the early levels are finding it difficult to run their businesses amid such uncertainties. Here, Praveen Sinha said that the entrepreneurs will have to evolve different strategies and execution at different points in time. “There are multiple aspects that have to be taken care of,” he says.

“First is the customers and the environment, second is the product and the solution it is catering, what customizations and tweaking are required. The third is if it is still not profitable, either you start raising funds and in parallel finding ways to reduce costs, move it to a flexible model, given the uncertain time where lockdowns and curfew keep happening. The model needs to be dynamic, you cannot have fixed costs. And then the fourth is a team that understands if there are no sufficient funds, then the team also needs to move on,” adds Praveen Sinha Jabong Co-Founder.

He also said that the focus of the startups at an early stage “is more towards product and customer, the mid-stage is about your growth, the satisfaction of the customers, and building the momentum on what you have already achieved. The next is while raising funds, making it more profitable by reducing the cost while ensuring the building up of processes so that scaling up is stable and not unreliable in terms of performance and delivery.”

For entrepreneurs finding it difficult to run their operations during lockdowns and are anxious about the future, Praveen Sinha suggested they be more flexible while inculcating strategies. He says, “Many entrepreneurs are anxious about the revolving uncertainties in reference to Covid-19. Sometimes the lockdowns are imposed and the team has to work from home, sometimes the team is infected with coronavirus and they can’t work and such similar problems are appearing regularly these days.”

“Here, you will have to be more flexible, for instance, you can cut down the cost by making your team a combination of freelancers and full-time employees. Amid such uncertainties, adopt a flexible work model, that is going to help you a lot in reducing fixed costs, eventually making your business run successfully,” adds Praveen Sinha.

Centre explains: Vaccine production can’t be ramped up overnight

The India Saga Saga |

On Friday, the Union health ministry stated that vaccine production takes time and that even if it is doubled, it will not result in an immediate rise in availability because this is not an overnight procedure. A vaccine, according to the Centre, is a biological product of medicinal importance that takes time to harvest and analyse for quality. According to the government, which defended its vaccination strategy, production expansion must also be guided because the ultimate result must be safe.

The statement comes after Congressman Rahul Gandhi questioned the immunisation rate and stated that there is no immunisation strategy. At the current rate, it will take another three years to vaccinate the entire population, and by that time, India will have had several pandemic waves.

Prakash Javadekar, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, responded to the criticism by stating that the health ministry has a plan in place to vaccinate the entire population of the country by December 2021, as production capacity for current vaccines will be increased and more vaccines will be approved in the coming days.

Covid-19 vaccinations are in great demand around the world, and manufacturers in different nations have limited manufacturing capacity, according to the government. Despite the shortages, India has vaccinated 200 million people in only 130 days, making it the world’s third-largest coverage.

The health ministry has denied reports that four crore Covaxin doses had gone missing, claiming that the reports are false. “Some sections reporting the above situation have made a misunderstanding about Bharat Biotech’s assertions of 6 crore dosages,” it stated.

According to the government, Bharat Biotech, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical business, has given the Centre with 2,76,66,860 vaccine doses as of May 28. In April, it produced 1 crore vaccine doses per month, and in July-August, it would produce 7-7 crore vaccine doses per month. By September, the total number of dosages produced would have surpassed 10 crore.

Several publications indicated that there is a difference between what Bharat Biotech claims to be producing and the vaccine supply, citing affidavits filed by the Centre and Bharat Biotech’s earlier declarations.

‘Love in Kalimpong’, an immersive experience of nature’s belle with an intense love story

The India Saga Saga |

There’s nothing quite like the peace in the mountains, being surrounded by nature’s giants. Setting amid the lush greens, with streams of cold water flowing by, the town of Kalimpong is one of the best examples in the site of the Himalayan foothills in West Bengal. The serendipity of the place beholds the eyes of every soul walking through its streets. From the sky-touching mountains to the soft-spoken inhabitants, Kalimpong is nothing less than a heaven. And, when the environment itself is like this, it’s quite uncomplicated to fall in love. ‘Love in Kalimpong’ is a short film set in the town that gives promising respect to its culture, and has birthed the popularity of folk-rock music.

Produced under the banner of Blackeye Entertainment LLP and Chai Stories Films LLP, the short film has a commendable cast with actor Raghav Diwanand actress Rajeswari Chakraborty in the lead roles. Prithviraj Das Gupta, the director of the film recently spilled some tea about the movie which has got everyone on the edge of their seats as they anticipate the film to release.

Question 1:

How does the story sets in and resonates with the beauty of Kalimpong and how is it planned to amalgamate both the things together?

Answer 1:

When love is combined with the beauty of nature, magic is bound to happen. Having grown up here, I am acquainted with the intricacies of the town. Kalimpong inhibits a lot of memorabilia from the British Period, including its architecture which adds to the complete theme of the movie. But the most exquisite aspect of the same is, we have cactuses growing here, amidst the mountains. It is never thought that a cactus can find its way to grow in the hills lest being the reason for its beauty. The stark difference between the two makes them stand out when being together. We portray the same thing through the movie. Two individuals from opposite worlds collide and fall in love with each other. It is the personification of the two with the cactus and the mountain that gives it a serene vibe.

Question 2:

Generally, when we talk about love stories, they have had some real-life inspiration. So where did your inspiration come from for ‘Love in Kalimpong’?

Answer 2:

The written story is a combined effort of Akshita Vohra, FTII pass out and a friend of mine from Dehradun, and me. I have seen a lot of people go through something similar which made me weave their experiences together. Kalimpong is very famous for its folk-rock music. It has a deep-rooted essence and love flowing which inspired me to concoct a story around one of its musicians that gave birth to the character of ‘Rishi’.

Similarly, when it comes to ‘Iris’, she has every quality one could see in a northeastern girl. She has the innocence and the curiosity I have always witnessed in people around me in the town. There is a mystery that lies behind those eyes, which could only be solved through the medium of the film.

Question 3:

Having shot a variety of films earlier, what is that value you keep taking forward with every new venture of yours?

Answer 3:

My feature film ‘Green Blackberries’ was very raw and straightforward talking about the education system. It was a part of the Indian panorama in the 51st International film Festival of india. I didn’t experiment much with that movie, but certainly, it showcased the beauty of Mizoram where it was shot. Similarly, with ‘Love in Kalimpong’ I want the world to see how impeccably beautiful the North-Eastern part of our country is. It is a fiction film, gives me all the power to go fanatical with the cinematography portraying the town most magnificently. Our DOP, Gaurav Roy has been doing a terrific job with the camera.

Question 4:

What are the major things at the top of your mind that you most importantly want to focus on while filming the movie? Also, does your star cast share the same vision?

Answer 4:

We want to tell the whole story in a very fluid manner. It will provide a very immersive experience to its viewers that they feel as if they are amid the huge rocks standing on the green grass. My prime focus is maintaining the visuals in the most premium manner. This adds to how I finalized the cast as well. I have worked with Raghav Diwan earlier and he is the perfect fit for the character with his rugged yet hypnotic personality suiting to be a musician. And talking about Rajeshwari, I wanted to have someone who I could mold into the character easily, someone who is fresh and wowed by the beauty of what is happening around. She has been the winner of Miss Sikkim and Miss North East as well. Living in Kalimpongfor a while, all of us have imbibed the emotions of the place and dwell in the peace it provides.

Question 5:

As a filmmaker, what do you think is the most important aspect of direction?

Answer 5:

Getting into filmmaking is like jumping into an ocean full of creativity. It requires precision. I think the one thing that stands very important for me will always be the relatability factor. My visuals need to be something that I have already lived in so that I know how to depict them in the most honest way possible. It is only then the viewers would relate. If you could satisfy your heart and enjoy the experience of what you are creating, then for sure your audience will end up falling in love with it.

Confederating the culture of the town with its incessant beauty, ‘Love in Kalimpong’ is certain to break the grounds with the love it will bring along. The innocence of the people through the characters, presenting the musical epiphany through folk-rock, and depicting the magic of a cactus growing amid the high mountains, the movie is intending to be an intense ride of love.
