According to Lloyd, “Consolidated statements represent the financial position of a company and its performance including its subsidiaries, joint ventures, and associate companies.

For example: Let us assume the example of HDFC Bank. HDFC Bank(Parent Company) has many subsidiaries like HDFC Life Insurance, HDFC Asset Management Company(AMC), NextGen Publishing to name a few. For the purpose of understanding, let us just take three.

Now HDFC Bank performs regular retail banking operations along with running subsidiaries such as an AMC, an insurance company, and a publishing house to name a few. Each of these subsidiaries adds wealth to their parent company i.e. HDFC Bank LTD”.

“When we consider the consolidated statements of HDFC Bank Ltd. we also consider the contribution of its subsidiaries in consideration along with the HDFC retail banking activity i.e. AMC, insurance company and publishing house plus the functioning of the bank”, whereas standalone financial statements consider the functioning of the company as a single entity and do NOT include the contribution of its subsidiaries.

For instance, when you go through the standalone financial statements of a company, you read the financial position of the company with respect to its banking functions ONLY or all those functions which only HDFC Bank Ltd. performs as a separate entity not taking into consideration the contributions of its subsidies”, he adds.

On the question of what should be chosen amongst Consolidated or Standalone financials, Lloyd says, “As a rule of thumb, if you want to know the total overall financial strength of the company you mostly read the Consolidated financials of the company”.

On being asked when someone needs to read standalone financials, he says, “Generally, when there is no direct business-related intervention into its subsidiaries and associates you consider the standalone statement of the company. Otherwise, when you wish to analyze the financial health of the parent company as a separate entity you may read the stand-alone statements”.

“A good investor analyses BOTH consolidated and standalone statements to figure out shortfalls in the companies or any of its subsidiaries”, adds Lloyd.

Indian astronaut candidates for Gaganyaan mission complete training

The four cosmonauts shortlisted for Gaganyaan Mission, India’s first manned space mission, have completed their training in Russia, according to an official Russian statement here on Tuesday. The contract for the training of Indian officers was signed between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Russian launch service provider Glavcosmos in June 2019. The ?10,000-crore ambitious project is expected to be launched in 2022, the year of the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence. The Four Indian Air Force fighter pilots are likely to be potential candidates for the Gaganyaan Mission.

“In the evening we met with Indian gaganauts who had completed their training at Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. We also discussed with the (Indian) ambassador the future bilateral space projects,” Dmitry Rogozin, the head of the Russian state space corporation, said on his Telegram channel, as quoted by Sputnik.

Cosmonaut Training Center named after Yuri Gagarin on February 10, 2020, began the planned training of Indian cosmonaut candidates. The training was paused at the end of March due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 infection. It was later resumed in May.

The entire process of preparation and training included a number of elements necessary for future cosmonauts, such as medical and physical training, studying the Russian language, studying the design, layout, and systems of the Soyuz transport manned spacecraft.

People above 45-years of age to get vaccinated from April 1

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Tuesday that everyone above the age of 45 will be able to get vaccinated for coronavirus from April 1.

 “We have enough vaccines. All eligible people should get registered as it is a shield against COVID-19. We appeal all above 45+ should get vaccinated,” Javadekar said during a press conference. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan sent a letter to chief administrators of all states and Union Territories, which stated, “Based on available scientific evidence, the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC) has been guiding all aspects of the vaccination drive.” He further added, “From April 1, there will now be no need for a comorbidity certificate for people aged 45 years to 59 years.” The registration on Co-WIN would begin on April 1.

4.85 crore people have already received the first dose of the Covid vaccine and 80 lakh have received the second. In the center’s letter to states yesterday, there is a clause to increase the gap between two doses of Serum Institute of India’s Covishield – developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca. Mr. Javadekar said, “Doctors would prescribe the right time for the second dose. It has to be between four to eight weeks. Doctors will decide when it is best to take the second shot.” 

Though new COVID-19 infections dropped by 13 percent to 40,715 on Tuesday, India has seen a spike in coronavirus cases over the past few weeks, with the daily rise staying above 30,000 since March 18. The active cases have recorded an increase for the 13th day in a row, according to the Union health ministry. The number of cases with the UK, South Africa, and Brazil variants of the Covid virus across the country is 795.

Vaccinations rolled out with two vaccines – Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin — on January 16 with healthcare workers. Frontline workers were declared eligible for the shots from February 2 onwards.

Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia announces reform in drinking age limit from 25 to 21

Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday announced lowering the legal age to drink liquor in the national capital to 21 from 25. Deputy Chief said the decision was aimed at “stopping harassment of people and establishments”. He also said that no new liquor shops will be opened in Delhi.

“The legal age to drink in Delhi will now be 21. There will be no government liquor stores in Delhi. No new liquor shops will be opened in the national capital,” Sisodia said at a press conference announcing changes to the national capital’s excise policy.

“The new excise policy was approved by the Cabinet today on basis of the recommendations of the Group of Ministers. At present, 60 per cent of liquor shops in Delhi are run by the government,” Sisodia said.

“Government will ensure equitable distribution of liquor shops so that liquor mafia are thrown out of the trade. A revenue growth of 20 per cent is estimated after the reforms in the excise department,” he added.

As a part of reforms, the Delhi Government will likewise set up an international standard test framework by which it will keep a watch on low- quality alcohols and stop their dispersion. An international quality lab will be set up to test the quality of alcohol coming into the city.
