Daughter of Rickshaw Driver, Manya Singh crowned as Miss India 2020 runner-Up

Manya Singh, daughter of a rickshaw driver from Uttar Pradesh has been crowned as Miss India 2020 runner-up. The victory turned sweeter by the fact that after many sleepless nights and years of hard work she earned this achievement.

Manya earlier opened up about the struggles she faced on the road to success. She stated that she hoped to inspire others by using the platform provided by Miss India to talk about her journey.  

In a post shared by the official Instagram handle of Miss India back in December, she said, “My blood, sweat, and tears have amalgamated into the courage to pursue my dreams.”

Born in Kushinagar, she said in her post that she grew up in tough circumstances, spending nights without food or sleep and walking miles just to save a few rupees. She yearned for books and clothes that were not hand-me-downs, but luck was never in her favor, she said.

She believes that education is the strongest weapon one can have with themselves at all times. She also mentioned in an Instagram post that her parents mortgaged whatever little jewelry they had to pay for her exam fee. Doted on by her mother, she has won the Best Student award during her Higher Secondary College.

She said she struggled a lot in life till date, from not being able to pay her school fees to not being able to afford books and being neglected by her classmates for being an auto driver’s daughter”.

Manya said that she studied during the day, washed dishes in the evening, and worked at a call center at night to make a living. “I’ve walked hours to reach places so I could save the rickshaw fare,” she said.

After the crowning ceremony, she said, “I am here today at the VLCC Femina Miss India 2020 stage to uplift my father, my mother, and my young brother and to show the world that all is possible if you are committed to yourself and your dreams.”

The Miss India organization thanked the newly crowned for “sharing her story of struggle and hard work” and hailed her as an inspiration to others. 

The Miss India pageant is organized by Femina, a women’s magazine published by The Times Group.

Social Activist Ashraf Vadakkutt creating meaningful impact in Kerala’s socio-political arena

Mr Ashraf is a prominent face of pilgrim town of Guruvayur and among new generation of activists from Kerala who believes in effectively intervening for the betterment of life for ordinary people


Ashraf Vadakkutt is a photographer and a businessman and has a normal life of a Keralite but what makes him interesting is his passion for activism that is earning him laurels. He has proactively raised issues that concern the lives of people and has suffered jail term for protesting injustices. This is a glance into the world of Mr Ashraf who is making waves recently.

He was born on May 21, 1972to KB Ali in the suburban regions of Vadakkekad, Thrissur. He finished his schooling and had to work for a livelihood from an earlier age.

Ashraf has taken up many issues and was a part of many agitations that resulted in success. Some of the campaigns he has undertaken effectively is cleaning up of Conolly Canal, agitation for Chakkakandam, against garbage treatment plants in densely populated areas,  pathetic situation of roads in the pilgrim town of Guruvayoor and anti-narcotic programs.

He emerged as a student leader in the 90’s as the disciple of Congress Veteran KS Narayanan Namboothiri. He shot into public consciousness due to one noted incident from his school days. The Pengamukuschool he was studying denied the permission to pay gratitude to national leaders on an Independence day, he gathered students and public and raised the national flag. He was the school leader and he defied the diktats of the management and the local media reported this incident with much importance.

The then Vadakkanchery MLA KS Narayanan Namboothiri took note of it and informed the education minister of Kerala and minister rebuked the school authorities and lauded Ashraf for his effort for the Independence day program.

His penchant for involving and intervening in improving lives of people continued throughout his youth. His anti-alcohol campaigns became popular and led to reform throughout coastal areas where the issue of alcoholism and narcotics were serious societal troubles. He was in jail for 29 days when he was protesting custodial torture of police. Ashraf has flagged the issue of unscientific construction of sea walls which was causing problems for the local people.

He is the district secretary of Thrissur for All Kerala Photography group and is chairman of Kamala Suraya Charity named after the famed poet. His leadership role and active interest are there in Human Rights Committees, D43 sports club, Action Aid, as PengamukkuKarichal Kadavu Mahallu Jamaat President and KunnankulamPoura Samithi. He was also a member of Janamaitri police initiative in Kunnamkulam.

He was KSU Taluk Secretary, Youth Congress KattakambalManalam President and Sevadal Vadakkanchery Unit Secretary.

Ashraf believes that one of his most important achievements till date is the intervention he made for Ammar, the son of poor Tamil migrants Yasir and Sumayya.

Through medical negligence, a serious injury happened on Ammar, and hospital ignored the plight of these migrant workers. It was a dedicated one and a half year legal fight that Ashraf took got them justice and compensation. His fight for the migrant labours in Human Rights commission attracted statewide recognition of his efforts and mainstream media commended on the good work that he has done.

A sociable and amicable face of pilgrim town of Guruvayur, Ashraf is a familiar face beyond politics and is open to all hues of spectrum. He believes that accessibility and approachability are 2 qualities that are much needed for an activist.

Yakshi Yash, 19-year-old, marks her debut in the field of literature with her book on ‘Nazms’

There is no better way of expressing yourself than with words. Poems can portray all your emotions with just a few lines but leave an everlasting impact on your soul. Trudging on the same path Yakshi Yash, published her first book, “Arzoo Teri Hai”, marking it as her inception in the literary world. The 19-year-old writer is doing her bachelors in Yoga from Kunti Naman University in Roorkee. Being passionate to write, Yakshi Yash always found her solace in reading and writing verses. Yakshi follows the motto of #loveyourself and  #loveyourwork which has undoubtedly added on to her carefree and yet such a deep personality.

“ ‘Arzoo Teri Hai’,  defines my being with all the emotions I have ever felt. It is without a doubt the closest thing to my heart”, says the writer. Her love for her first book and her desires to write more and continue down the same path is pretty evident. With an increasing fan base on all social media accounts, Yakshi, for certain, is going to achieve the highest grounds of success with her impeccable talent.

Pfizer withdraws application for emergency use of its Covid-19 vaccines in India

Delhi:  On Friday, Leading Pharmaceutical Company Pfizer ordered to withdraw its application for Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) of its COVID-19 vaccine in the nation. 

An expert body under India’s apex drug regulator has recommended against granting approval to Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine under emergency use, prompting the company to withdraw its request.

Pfizer was the first pharmaceutical firm to seek an emergency use authorisation from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for its COVID-19 vaccine in the country. It already secured similar clearances in countries like the UK and Bahrain.

A Company Spokesperson said in a statement, “In pursuance of the Emergency Use Authorisation of its COVID-19 vaccine, Pfizer participated in the Subject Expert Committee meeting of the Drug Regulatory Authority of India on February 3. Based on the deliberations at the meeting and our understanding of additional information that the regulator may need, the company has decided to withdraw its application at this time.”

They also added that they will continue to engage with the authority and resubmit its approval request with additional information as it becomes available in the near future. They said “Pfizer remains committed to making its vaccine available for use by the Government in India and to pursuing the requisite pathway for emergency use authorisation that enables the availability of this vaccine for any future deployment.”

In December 2020, Pfizer in its application submitted to the ‘Drug Regulator’ sought permission to import the vaccine for sale and distribution in India.

Actor Priyanka Chopra made it to the BAFTA 2021 longlist

Miss World 2000 Priyanka Chopra has made it to the BAFTA 2021 longlist in the category of ‘Best Supporting Actress’. She has been considered for her role as Pinky Madam in Ramin Bahrani’s ‘The White Tiger’.

For the BAFTA 2021 longlist, Priyanka is in the company of stars such as Oscar-winner Olivia Colman and Oscar-nominated stars Glenn Close and Saoirse Ronan. The selections have been made out of 234 entries. The second round of voting will select the final list of six nominees and finally, the third round will decide the winner.

In The White Tiger, Priyanka Chopra and Rajkummar Rao play the roles of a rich married couple, who have been living with their family in India after returning from the US for their business. Adarsh Gourav plays the role of their poor driver named Balram Halwai, who, after an accident, rebels and becomes a master of his own. The White Tiger is director Ramin Bahrani’s adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s Man Booker Prize-winning debut novel of the same name.

Priyanka Chopra’s cousin, Bollywood actor Parineeti Chopra took to Instagram Stories to share her excitement. She wrote “Ladies and gentlemen, meet my BAFTA Longlist sister. I meaaaaan, Can’t wait for this to happen.”

Along with Priyanka, The White Tiger’s lead actor, Adarsh Gourav has also made it to the BAFTA longlist for the Lead Actor category. He is in the race against the likes of Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Ralph Fiennes and others.

Priyanka also shared a list of all the categories that the film has been longlisted in, including Best Director, Best Film, and others on her Instagram handle. She wrote, “Wow all the feels for our beautiful film.”

Singer Danny Dhillon gained stardom with his hits “Patake, Single Status and Approach.” After his last hit, “Number phone Da”, he is coming back with a new song for his fans.

His new track is, titled “Mehndiyan”. The upcoming number, featuring Prabh Grewal, will be a Punjabi bhangra song which is a must play song on every wedding. “Mehndiyan” will be releasing this February. The lyrics were given by Jung Sandhu and music by Rupin Kahlon.

His last track was released from Speed Records but this time he will be releasing from his own Record Label “Funky Fox Studios”. On further asking about the confirmation of release date, he said he has completed the music video shoot and editing work is still in progress.
