New Zealand approves Pfizer or BioNTech vaccines for use in the country

The India Saga Saga |

Wellington: On Wednesday, New Zealand authorised the use of  Pfizer or  BioNTech Covid-19  vaccine for emergencies expecting to receive the first shipment by April. With this it becomes  the first COVID-19 vaccine to be approved in the country.

The regulators’ (Medsafe) approval is the culmination of a rigorous assessment process over several months to ensure that the Pfizer or BioNTech vaccine is safe and effective to use. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern quoted in a press release, “It is informed by the most up to date medical and scientific data and we have confidence in their decision.”

COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins stated, “Frontline medical workers, border staff and risk groups will receive the shots first. He added, “We expect the first Pfizer or BioNTech vaccines will arrive in New Zealand by the end of the first quarter, but we are making sure everything is in place in case there is an earlier arrival.”

According to national media, the first batch of vaccines received by the country will have 450,000 out of 1.5 million Pfizer vaccine doses. The island nation also has contracts with other vaccine manufacturers too like Janssen, AstraZeneca and Novovax.

With vaccination drives being processed under dozens of countries, including the United States, India and China, pressure has been mounting on Jacinda Ardern to start inoculations for the country’s 5 million citizens.

Opposition party leaders accuse that New Zealand has fallen behind the rest of the world and risked losing its advantage after virtually eliminating COVID-19 through a tough lockdown and border closures.

New Zealand’s Health Chief Ashley Bloomfield said that the country’s regulators have placed 58 conditions for the approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine related to additional manufacturing data and ensuring information is provided on any safety concerns elsewhere.

Putting all the conflicts to rest Jacinda said, “2021 is the year of the vaccine. It’s a full-year programme we have only just begun. We’re not in a race to be first, but to ensure safe and timely access to vaccines for all New Zealanders.”

A truly unconventional ‘Pandemix’ production that inspired us

The India Saga Saga |

As the film, theatre, and music fraternity took a forced sabbatical and the culturally and artistically inclined waited for the curtains to open again, Trishita Recs stepped into the world of Indie music with her Hindi debut single, Aasmaan. To keep the ball rolling, she also released her five-track EP called ‘Khoyi Rahun’.

For somebody who relies heavily on social interaction, the pandemic was a tough time. In her home’s confined place, Trishita had the opportunity to indulge in what she truly loves. From playing different instruments to practicing song-writing, Trishita believes music helped soothe her soul. She considers this time with herself as a blessing because she got time to do what she usually couldn’t, which helped flourish her creativity.

Her work is what we can call a classic example of a ‘Pandemic Production’. The compositions, writing, recording, mixing, everything happened via phone calls, text messages, and video chats. The process that usually takes around 12 months was completed in just four because of the team’s dedication and enthusiasm.

“All the tracks on the EP are different from each other. Not only are they of different genres, but they also help me express a variety of different emotions. In a way, the EP can be called an emotional rollercoaster” says Trishita.

“The topics of the tracks have been inspired by my personal experiences and observations. I have always loved the idea of using art as a method of expression. Therefore, each song explores a unique emotion lyrically and dives deep in terms of genre-based production. The overall soundscape of the album is quite eclectic in its approach” addsTrishita.

Trishita believes that art requires dedication and energy. However, she says when building oneself, receiving support from others is also very essential. She is grateful to have had an army of people who have supported her dreams no matter how difficult it may have seemed or gotten. Moreover, she also believes that art can shape minds. This is why she wants her music to be not only influential but also impactful.

Trishita started her musical journey at the age of five with her very first stage performance. There was no stopping her then as she went on to pursue Hindustani Classical Music. Growing up in Madhya Pradesh and Kolkata, both being culturally rich places, she spent a big part of her life invested in art, music, and theatre. After over a decade of local gigs, competitions, cover artistry, reality shows, she stepped forward and released her own music.

It is not only the kids but also their parents who have put in equal amounts of efforts for their children’s success. Having decided to move to Mumbai leaving their well-settled jobs back in their hometown wasn’t an easy decision but they chose to look forward to better opportunities for their kids. “We don’t want to leave any stone unturned in the path of our kids’ success. We are in it as much as they are”, say the Bhadoriya parents. Having such a strong backing is unmistakably the reason for such perfect skills the duo showcases, ‘cuz they are groomed in such a beautiful way.

Ritu Bhadoriya, the mom, says, “I well up with happy tears every time someone mentions to me how striking my kids are and how amazingly they perform on the sets. We have seen them grow through their struggles and emerge the perfect ones they are now.” Overall this duo is a treat to watch. “Disappointed that Union Budget 2021 completely marginalized Aviation Sector,” said Nuzhat Kazi

The India Saga Saga |

Due to the novel coronavirus, the travel and tourism sector was one of the worst-hit in 2020. As many domestic and international routes still remain under restrictions, airlines are facing massive losses every day.

“Travel Industry was one of the first industries to be hit and I think one of the last industries to maybe make a comeback,” said Ritu Mehrotra, country manager – India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives at Booking.com.

With the stop of air travel in March, Indian private jet operators feared the worst, believing the pandemic would decimate their businesses. Amid these trying times, the aviation sector was expecting serious relief measures from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s budget.

Founder of Czar Air, Nuzhat Kazi says, “The pandemic has badly hit the private aviation sector too! Very few people are flying amidst the pandemic, that too whenever really needed. The on-ground cost of maintenance is extremely high. With nearly no bookings, there is no inflow. Overall, it has been very stressful.”

Nuzhat Kazi founded Czar Air; a chartered aircraft service provider that offers a variety of luxurious services like corporate flying, bulk charter services, air ambulances, helicopter joy rides, and much more. Czar Air is one of India’s finest chartered plane service provider, based outside of Bombay. They cater to customized air travel services across the globe.

In conversation with Nuzhat, sheexpresses, “I had high expectations from the Union Budget but I was extremely disappointed. Just like the other sectors, aviation was badly affected but was completely ignored in the budget. With the COVID vaccine coming into place and the travel and tourism industry slowly opening up, not enough incentives have been provided to the Aviation Industry.”

“Our Finance Minister needs to compensate more on Travel and Tourism. New people might not be venturing into this field but for those who have worked so hard and faced many challenges, the Government should provide subsidiaries in the form of incentives. Moreover, since the spare parts of the aviation come from France, the Government could provide us with subsidiaries on the custom duties. Another way out could be if we were provided with a tax rebate.” suggests Nuzhat.

Nuzhat says, “When I founded my brainchild, Czar Air, the Goods and Service Tax (GST) was 12.36% and now has been increased to 18% which is ridiculous. I could have used that money to enhance my business instead.”

“A great solution would be if the Government could reduce the parking fee for the aviation sector in general. Since most of our charters are parked in Mumbai, I know how ridiculously stressful it is to keep up with the fees we are charged!” adds Nuzhat.

Nuzhat suggests “The Government could promote the practice of safe travel and provide an impetus to the aviation sector. Only a small percent of those in the sector have been able to withstand and face the difficulties. Hence, they must be aided by the Government, especially for the numerous employees whose livelihood greatly depend on it.”

A new ‘agri-infra cess was imposed today on petrol (?2.5 per litre) and diesel (?4). But Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, however, assured that the burden on the taxpayers would be offset by a cut in excise duties.

Though, the budget provided no relaxation for middle-class families as the Income Tax slabs remained unchanged in the Union Budget 2021. However, senior citizens aged 75+ will be exempted from filing income tax returns.
