Qatar released eight former Indian Navy officers who were on death row.

sachin |

According to the Indian government, eight Indian naval officers who had been given the death penalty after being accused of espionage have been freed from Qatar. As per the statement released by the foreign ministry on Monday morning, seven of the eight Indian officers had already left for home. The statement read, “The release of eight Indian nationals who were detained in Qatar while working for the Dahra Global company is welcomed by the government of India.”

“Of the eight, seven have gone back to India. We are grateful that the Amir of the State of Qatar allowed these citizens to be released and return home. Eight Indian officers were found guilty of espionage in August 2022 and given the death penalty in October of the same year.

The released naval officers expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their “personal intervention”. “We are happy that we have returned to India safe and sound,” one of the freedmen told the Indian news agency. We want to express our gratitude to the Amir of Qatar for enabling this and to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his direct intervention in making this possible.

“We wouldn’t be standing in front of you if it weren’t for the intervention at the highest level and the relentless efforts of the government of India,” stated an additional person who was quoted.

The eight men were named Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Rajesh. The men worked for a consulting firm called Al Dahra, which counsels Qatar’s government on purchasing submarines. India had previously declared that it was “deeply shocked” to learn of the death sentences and that it would discuss the decision with the authorities in Qatar.

A Delhi court summons Zomato for the “false practice” of delivering food from “iconic restaurants.”

sachin |

In a civil lawsuit seeking a restraining order to stop the company from offering users the ability to order “hot and authentic food” from “iconic restaurants” all over the nation’s capital, a court in this location has summoned Zomato, a food delivery application.

The court was hearing a plea from a resident of Gurugram who said Zomato was delivering fresh food from popular restaurants under its ‘Dilli ke Legends’ sub-category, a “false and fraudulent” practise.

Civil Judge Umesh Kumar recently issued an order saying, “Issue summons of the suit and notice of application.” The plea claims that on October 24 last year, Sourav Mall ordered food from three restaurants in Jangpura, Kailash Colony, and Jama Masjid. He then tracked the delivery partner and discovered that the order was picked up from the “unknown and unnamed” location rather than the original restaurant.

Why was the food picked up from a nearby location when there isn’t a restaurant partner branch there? Why isn’t the food delivered in the restaurant partner’s original packaging? What is the assurance that the restaurant partner prepared the food? How can one be sure that the food is hot and freshly prepared? Said the plea.

It went on to say that Zomato’s 30-minute food delivery from famous Delhi restaurants to locations in Gurugram and Noida was “inexplicable”.

The complaint stated, “Such representation to users, customers or patrons of Zomato, is indeed intended to deceive the public.” Under the Code of Civil Procedure, the plea was filed as a “representative suit” for multiple impacted parties (CPC). On March 20, the case was posted pending further action.

Goa’s ST community vows to boycott Lok Sabha polls and demands a political quota.

sachin |

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced last week that the next state elections, set for 2027, will see the implementation of reservations for Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the Assembly.

Sawant informed the Assembly that his government had written to the Union Home Ministry and Law Ministry on February 7 to start the process of forming a delimitation commission to identify and determine Assembly segments which would be reserved for the STs in response to a “calling attention” motion made by the opposition MLAs. The chief minister said he would discuss the matter with Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.

What is the issue, and what is the new?

Last week, members of the tribal community marched towards the Assembly demanding ST-reserved seats when they were stopped by the police, following which a government delegation met. In Goa, the Scheduled Tribes have voting rights in panchayat, municipality, and Zilla parishad elections but not in assembly elections.

In May of last year, a group of sixteen ST organizations called Mission Political Reservation for STs of Goa unanimously passed a resolution threatening to boycott elections if their demand was unmet. This resolution coincided with Sawant’s assurance and the renewed focus on the issue ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Assembly considered the matter in July 2023 and approved a private member’s resolution advocating for ST reservations in the House. The resolution stated, “These communities (STs) deserve to be brought into the mainstream, need support to ensure that the community is empowered and educated, and therefore need a larger political representation to achieve the same.”

Chief of the Goa Forward Party (GFP), Vijay Sardesai, declared on Saturday that he would keep up his vociferous advocacy for the long-standing and “justified” demand of the ST community. The weak justifications and hollow promises made by the federal and state governments reveal the ruling party’s chronic indifference to the rights and welfare of native Goans. He declared in the House, “I will not give up until the community’s rights, guaranteed by the Constitution, are acknowledged and respected.

What role do the STs play in Goa politics?

According to the 2011 Census, the state has 40 Assembly constituencies, one of which (Pernem) is set aside for Scheduled Castes (SCs), who comprise 1.74% of the state’s population.

Tribals numbered 566 in the 2001 Census, but after the Gawdas, Kunbis, and Velips were granted ST status in 2003, their numbers rose to approximately 1.49 lakh in 2011. They are believed to be heavily represented in Quepem, Sanguem, Priol, and Nuvem, the four Assembly constituencies. None of the 40 seats, though, are ST-reserved.

The BJP’s Shripad Yesso Naik represents the North Goa Lok Sabha constituency, which includes Priol. Francisco Sardinha of the Congress represents the South Goa Lok Sabha seat, which provides for Quepem, Sanguem, and Nuvem.

What is the purpose of the protests being led by farmer unions in Noida and Greater Noida?

TheIndiaSaga Team |

On Thursday, farmers from more than 140 villages in Noida and Greater Noida will march towards Parliament in protest of the failure to meet the demands of three farmer unions regarding the resolution of their long-standing disputes over land acquisition. There are four protests going on right now in the Uttar Pradesh district of Gautam Buddha Nagar.

At the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) headquarters in Sector 24 and Noida Authority in Sector 6, the Jai Jawan Jai Kisan organization is leading a protest against the Ansal builders, All India Kisan Sabha against Greater Noida Authority, and Bharatiya Kisan Parishad. All of these groups met as a Mahapanchayat on Wednesday at the Greater Noida Authority office. There, it was decided to march to Parliament on Thursday to demand that their issues be resolved within a certain amount of time.Farmers want two things in particular. Firstly, they demand 10% of the developed land to be used as residential plots for their families as compensation for the land that the authorities have taken from them for various development projects. The farmers contend that they are landless because the majority of their land was purchased.

They wonder how their families and the next generation will make it while the government takes their land and brags about development. As of right now, the Noida Authority only gives the farmers 5% of the entire amount of land they have purchased, which they consider insufficient. As compensation for land acquisition, the Yamuna Authority gives them 7% of the developed plot, while the Greater Noida Authority gives them 6%.Furthermore, the farmers want extra money, with amounts determined by market rates from the time the land was purchased for various projects. The farmers claim that they are still suffering because their land was purchased at a low cost many years ago.

RBI declares a crackdown on Paytm Payments Bank because of ongoing non-compliance

TheIndiaSaga Team |

According to a central bank official on Thursday, the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) crackdown on Paytm Payments Bank’s operations resulted from persistent non-compliance with the regulator’s standards. At a press conference held after the central bank’s monetary policy review, RBI deputy governor Swaminathan J stated that the regulatory actions were implemented after allowing the company enough time to comply.

Citing supervisory concerns and rule violations, the RBI ordered Paytm Payments Bank to cease accepting new deposits in its accounts or well-known digital wallets as of March 1. At the same briefing, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das stated, “Enough time is given to non-compliant entities, but action is taken when bilateral talks don’t yield action.”

In the event that a constructive engagement fails or the regulated entity fails to take effective action, Das stated that supervisory or business restrictions would be imposed.

Das also mentioned that the central bank will provide any necessary clarifications regarding the Paytm order next week. As per Swaminathan’s statement, appropriate measures will be implemented to minimise any potential inconvenience to customers. How the central bank intends to proceed needed to be made clear by him. The remarks made by the deputy governor caused Paytm shares to drop by 10% on the National Stock Exchange. At last, the shares had experienced a 9% decline.

Vasant Panchami: Importance and Significance

TheIndiaSaga Team |

Indian festivals are centred on harmony and unity. Decent food, fresh clothes, and small get-togethers go hand in hand with all the fun and games. This calls for Basant Panchami celebrations because spring is a season of happiness for everyone. Winter gives way to spring at the start of Vasant Panchami, also known as Basant Panchami. Winter gradually ends after Makar Sankranti (January 14–15), bringing warmer days as the sun slowly moves northward from the tropics of Capricorn. When the subcontinent exhales after a harsh winter, a welcome shift in temperature signals the approach of spring. Around the time of Holi, spring truly blossoms following this roughly 30-day transition period that begins with Vasant Panchami.

In the Indian lunisolar calendar, Vasant Panchami occurs on the fifth day of the bright lunar fortnight (Sukla Paksha) in the month of Magha. This is equivalent to the Gregorian months of January and February.

Hindus celebrate Basant Panchami as Saraswati Pooja in honour of Maa Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music, and the arts, who is said to have been born on this day. People start new jobs, get married, or start anything new on this auspicious day.

Vasant Panchami: Relationship to the goddess Trinity

This land holds excellent significance for Vasant Panchami. The festival of the Saraswati River was also observed on Vasant Panchami. This celebration, which honours Goddess Saraswati, is called Saraswati puja in many regions of India. While Saraswati temples are adorned and crowded with devotees, Saraswati pujas are performed in homes. Since one of the names of the goddess Lakshmi is Sri, it is observed as Sri Panchami in southern India. On the day of Vasant Panchami, Goddess Parvati also dispatched Kama Deva to thwart Lord Shiva’s penance. Thus, the three goddesses of the Hindu trinity are linked to this festival of Vasant Panchami. Put another way, it’s a day to honour learning, wealth, and artistic joy.

How do the Saraswati River and the Goddess Saraswati relate to Vasant Panchami?

An ancient river in northwest India called the Saraswati River dried up over time. Back then, when spring arrived, the Himalayan glaciers would melt, causing the Saraswati River to flow more quickly. The mustard plants that bordered the river used to bloom in total, their yellow blossoms adorning the banks for miles along the riverbank, creating a breathtaking sight. It’s interesting to note that in Indian tradition, the colour yellow stands for knowledge. It is springtime’s hue.

A day honouring knowledge

The banks of the Saraswati River were once home to the ashrams of the rishis. The sage Veda Vyasa also lived here. The Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures were written and assembled on the banks of the Saraswati River. As a result, the river came to be connected to the goddess of wisdom and knowledge, Saraswati.

Goddess Saraswati completes her association with the festival and the river on Vasant Panchami when draped in yellow. Today, people share food items coloured yellow and dress in yellow. Additionally, Vasant Panchami, a day dedicated to worshipping Goddess Saraswati, celebrates knowledge because, according to some traditions, it marks the beginning of a child’s education.

Many educational institutions observe Saraswati Pooja because it is thought to bestow talent, wisdom, and skill. Educational establishments, such as colleges and schools, throw intense celebrations for it. Maa Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge, is said to be celebrating her birthday on this day. She received prayers from teachers and students, and plans for the day included singing, dancing, and other activities. This day has great significance because it is marked by the belief that it is a day of worship for books, and therefore, one should not touch or study books.

The Delhi court will rule at 4 p.m. today on the ED’s appeal against Arvind Kejriwal

TheIndiaSaga Team |

On Wednesday, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi is expected to decide a complaint brought by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, for allegedly disobeying a summons in connection with an alleged money laundering case involving the liquor excise policy. At 4 p.m., the court will deliver its decision.

The investigation team went before the Delhi court on February 2, the day after Kejriwal ignored its summons for the fifth time. Divya Malhotra, the additional chief metropolitan magistrate, received the complaint and scheduled a follow-up hearing for Wednesday.

Kejriwal disregarded the fifth ED summons, claiming it was “illegal,” and claimed the BJP intended to have Kejriwal arrested to overthrow the government in Delhi.

The ED initially called the chief minister on November 2. Still, he ignored it, claiming the notice was “vague, motivated, and unsustainable in law,” and instead took off for a political rally in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh.

On December 21, Kejriwal was summoned by the investigation agency to testify; however, he enrolled in a 10-day Vipassana meditation course at a centre located in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. He was called upon three times this year: January 3, January 18, and February 2. He was called upon twice last year, on November 2 and December 21.

What is the case of the Delhi excise policy?

The Delhi government, led by Arvind Kejriwal, introduced an excise policy in 2021–2022 with the intention of revitalizing the city’s struggling liquor industry by substituting a license fee for traders for the previous sales-volume-based system. However, it was abandoned after Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena requested a CBI investigation into the policy and claimed anomalies.

The AAP was paid ₹100 crore in bribes to finalize the policy, and the party utilized a sizable portion of that sum for its Goa election campaign, as per the CBI chargesheet. Additionally, it claimed that some members of the “South Group” were involved in the purported irregularities.

High-ranking AAP officials have been detained by the investigation team thus far, including Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who have been arrested since last year.
