Cauvery Water Dispute arises, causing the “Bengaluru Bandh” in Karnataka

Preyensha Srivastava |

The District Magistrate Dayananda K.A.  confirmed that all the schools and colleges will remain closed because of the “Bengaluru Bandh”. The Organizations of farmers and pro-Kannada groups have called for a “Bengaluru Bandh” from 6 am to 6 pm on 26th September as a sign of protest against the “Cauvery Water Dispute” or the release of Cauvery water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. The protest-led Bandh will cause a lot of hardships for the people of Bangalore.

Normal life in the city will be affected as ATMs, schools, colleges, government offices, banks, shops, restaurants, and public as well as private transport are expected to be put to a halt. However, emergency services like hospitals, Petrol Pumps, Medical shops, etc. will function normally. For the prevention of riots and enforcement of law and order in the state section 144 has been enforced in the state. The state police tweeted, “Today addressing press, @CPBlr has reiterated that no bundh/protests/processions are allowed as per Supreme Court/High Court instructions. Section 144 enforced citywide – gatherings of more than 5 people are not permitted. Dial 112 for any help. Additional police will be deployed to maintain law and order” and inform about the situation.

The Cauvery River Dispute has been a major concern for the two South Indian states, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which arrived over the issue of sharing of the water from the Cauvery River, the issue traces its roots from as early as 1894. The reason why this year-old dispute has again come to the limelight is the decreased amount of rainfall in the Cauvery Basin area, leading to a water dearth. The Tamil Nadu government for that reason took the matter to the Supreme Court, demanding the Karnata reservoirs release water of  24,000 cubic feet per second volume.

The Deputy CM of Karnataka DK Shivakumar announced the release of 10 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu. However, he discouraged TN’s move to approach the Apex court and appealed to the CWMA to take another look at the decision made regarding the Water scarcity in the state.

1992 Cricket World Cup: The Unpredictable Pakistanis

Arsh Verma |

The 1992 World Cup was the first time the tournament took place after five years instead of four. India, who won the Cricket World Cup in 1983, hosted the 1987 edition of the tournament. Continuing the tradition, the venue of the World Cup was shifted to Australia and New Zealand for the 1992 edition. This was the first edition of the tournament that was held in the Southern Hemisphere and was also the first time that South Africa participated.

In continuation to ‘A Countdown to World Cup’ series, today we will take a look at how underdogs Pakistan beat England to claim their first World Cup title.

The World Cup of 1992

The Cricket World Cup 1992 (Benson & Hedges World Cup 1992) was that edition of the World Cup where many things happened for the first time, one of them being the inclusion of Colorful kits instead of whites, and white balls instead of red cherries. The Championship took place between 22 February 1992 to 25 March 1992 in the Oceanic countries of Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand, England, South Africa, and Pakistan qualified for the semi-finals.

Format

There was a certain change in the format of the championship, rather than dividing eight teams into two groups of four, a round-robin format was adopted for nine teams playing. This meant that all teams played against every team, and the top four would qualify for the semis.

Semi-Finals

In the first semi-final, Pakistan faced New Zealand. NZ, who were favorites to win the match and secure a place in the Final, elected to bat first. A 100-run partnership between captain Martin Crowe and Ken Rutherford accelerated New Zealand to 262 runs, setting a massive 263-run target. New Zealand captain, Martin Crowe got injured while he got out in the first Innings. John Wright was selected as the stand-in captain and this proved to be a mistake. Pakistan was off to an okayish start, and a couple of quick wickets brought Inzamam-ul-Haq to the crease. The young right-hander smashed 60 runs off 37 balls, taking victory away from the Black Caps. Pakistan accelerated to the finals.

In the second semi-final, England faced South Africa. A match rather remembered for the controversial rule, was played at the famous SCG. England batting first, scored 252/6 because of a masterful innings from Graeme Hick, who was later awarded the Man of the Match for his 83 off 90. South Africa came in to bat and was off to a good start and was on their way to chase the target. The match was equally spaced, when SA required 22 runs off 13 balls, till the rain interrupted. With the help of the most productive overs method, the target was revised to 22 off a single delivery, making the match one-sided. The controversial system was then replaced by the DLS, after the World Cup in Australia. England qualified for the Final against Pakistan.

Final

An in-form English team took on Pakistan, in the World Cup Final of 1992. Pakistan batted first and lost two early ones. Imran Khan, who was playing his last match, partnered along with Javed Miandad to rebuild the innings. The two batters batted for approximately 31 overs and scored 139 runs. Inzamam and Wasim Akram also joined the party and brought Pakistan to 249 runs. England chasing a 250-run target, fell prey to Wasim Akram’s swing and pace. Akram, along with Javed and Mushtaq bundled out England 227. Making the Men-in-Green, World Champions for the first time. This was the Dream tale of Pakistan’s road to victory, and how it rose from the bottom to become the Champions of the world.

Asian Games: Indian Youngsters Claim First Gold for the Country

Preyensha Srivastava |

In just two days, the Indian Shooting delegation won five medals, including one gold medal. The outstanding effort from the Indian Shooting team displays the country’s supremacy in the game, as it makes a mark on the Asian games. The Indian 10m air rifle team, under the leadership of the world champion Rudrankksh Patil, was assertive of victory. The team secured India’s first gold at this tournament and created history. They set a world record on Monday, marking their name in the Elite shooters of the game.

Talking about the details of the game, in a close battle against his countryman Rudrankksh, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar claimed an individual bronze medal. Tomar increased India’s medal count to four. In the next contest, a 25m rapid-fire team event, the team of three experienced shooters Adarsh Singh, Anish Bhanwala, and Vijayveer Sidhu scored 1718, securing a bronze, just behind South Korea and China, with a score of 1734 and 1765 respectively. The highlight of the event was when the 10m air rifle team claimed the gold medal. The air rifle team included Rudrankksh, Aishwary, and an Olympian, Divyansh Singh Panwar. During the qualification round, the team had an aggregate score of 1893.7.

The Indian trio competed nicely against the strong Chinese and Korean teams claiming the gold.  Rudrankksh exhibited an exceptional performance by scoring 632.5, while Tomar and Panwar scored 631.6 and 629.6, bringing the aggregate to 1893.7. South Korea, which claimed the Silver medal, had an aggregate of 1890.1, while China had 1888.2 claiming bronze. A small bit of disappointment hit the Indian team, as they just missed the silver and gold places. Despite performing well in the qualification round, Tomar only managed 228.8 for the bronze medal. South Korea’s Park Hajun took the Silver spot after China’s Sheng Lihao, who scored the world record score of 253.3, grabbed the gold medal. As the team played well and left the competitors behind in the race for gold, the father of 19-year-old Rudrankksh Patil, said that his son was determined to perform his best in the tournament. He is confident about his abilities.

Pitru Paksha; Importance, Significance, Observance, Do’s and Don’ts

Preyensha Srivastava |

Indians have a healthy civilisation manners of respecting and caring for their elders. We considered this as a tribute and route to show gratitude for their guidance and wisdom. In Bhartiya culture, respecting elders even after their demise is deeply ingrained in heritage, it is about honouring their experience, admiring their wisdom and seeking their blessings. It is an elegant aspect of our culture. In their honour and memory, Hindu devotees observe Pitru Paksha for 16 days every year in the Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar.

Pitru Paksha ‘Patra Ancestral Fortnight’ is 16 days in the Hindu calendar when Hindus honour their ancestors (Pitrs), especially with food offerings. The period is also known as Pitri Paksha, Shraddha, and Kanagat. Pitru Paksha is considered auspicious by Hindus because of the death rites performed during the ceremony known as Shraddha or Tarpana. This year it will start from 29th September, Friday.

Importance

In Hinduism, the souls of the ancestors of the previous three generations live in Pitriloka, between heaven and earth. This sphere is ruled by Yama, the god of death, who takes the dead soul from Earth to Pitriloka. Only those three generations are given Shraddha rituals in which Yama plays a prominent role. In Pitru Paksha, prayers are offered for moksha to the ancestors as well as the ritual performers. According to Swami Sivananda, Pitru Paksha alleviates the suffering of souls who remain in heaven before experiencing samsara or rebirth, and in case those souls are reborn after their death, Shradda increases their happiness in their new birth.

According to Hindu sacred epics, at the beginning of Pitru Paksha, the sun enters the zodiac sign Schalku the table of contents Virgo (Kanya). Simultaneously with this moment, the spirits probably leave Pitriloka and remain in the homes of their descendants for a month, until the sun enters the next sign of the zodiac – Scorpio (Vrischika) – and the full moon arrives. Hindus are expected to appease their ancestors during the first half, the dark fortnight.

Significance

Hindus consider it mandatory to perform Shraddha during Pitru Paksha to ensure that the soul of the ancestor reaches heaven. In this context, the scripture Garuda Purana says, “There is no salvation for a man without a son.”  The scriptures preach that the householder should reconcile his ancestors (Pitris), as well as gods (devas), elements (bhutas), and strangers. The scripture Markandeya Purana says that when the ancestors are satisfied with the shraddhas, they grant the performer health, wealth, knowledge and longevity, and finally heaven and salvation (moksha).

Observance & Rituals

Shraddha is performed on a specific lunar day during Pitru Paksha when an ancestor – usually a parent or grandparent – has died. There are exceptions to the monthly rule; special days are given to people who died in a certain way or had a certain position in life. It is essential for Shraddha, to be performed by a son – usually the eldest – or a male relative on the father’s side of the family, limited to the previous three generations. However, on Sarvapitri Amavasya, a daughter’s son can offer Shraddha in his mother’s family if there is no male heir in his mother’s family. Some castes perform shraddha only for one generation.

Foods offered to the ancestors are usually cooked in silver or copper vessels and usually placed on a banana leaf or in cups made of dried leaves. Food should include Kheer and the most loved food by ancestors.

A man who performs shraddha must take a purifying bath beforehand and must wear a dhoti, then the ancestors are invited. Shraddha is usually performed bare-chested because the position of the sacred thread has to be changed several times during the ceremony. The sraddha includes pinda dana, an offering to the pinda ancestors, associated with releasing water from the hand. This is followed by worship of Vishnu (in the form of darbha grass, golden image or Shaligram stone) and Yama. A food offering is then made, specially prepared for the rooftop ceremony. The sacrifice is considered accepted when the crow arrives and eats the food; the bird is believed to be a messenger of Yama or an ancestral spirit.

Do’s

  • Food, donations, and clothes are offered to Brahmins during this period.
  • Animals like crows, dogs, and cows are fed regularly.
  • We must worship our ancestors every morning and evening during this period.
  • We must follow Brahmacharya mode.
  • If possible feed the poor.

Don’ts

  • Avoid using abusive language and cursing; it creates a negative energy.
  • Discontinue eating rice, garlic, onion, non-veg, tobacco, and eggs.
  • Do not cut your nails, hair and beard.
  • Stop yourself from buying new clothes.
  • Alcohol consumption is also prohibited during this period.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce: Love Rumors Score Big at Kansas City Chiefs

Preyensha Srivastava |

Well I guess, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce now most certainly cannot shake off all the dating rumours. The Anti-Hero singer made a surprise appearance during FOX’s broadcast of the Kansas City Chiefs game with the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Seated comfortably in a suite beside Donna Kelce, the mother of Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce, Swift rocked a vibrant red and white hoodie while passionately cheering for the Chiefs as they geared up for kickoff.

Swift’s unexpected cameo at the game instantly rekindled speculations about her romantic involvement with the Super Bowl champion. This follows her recent split from Joe Alwyn. Meanwhile, Travis Kelce had previously been linked with on-air reporter Kayla Nicole, with their on-again, off-again relationship spanning five years. Fans wasted no time in taking to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to express their excitement and curiosity about Swift’s appearance at the Sunday football showdown. The buzz around the pop sensation and the NFL star continues to captivate the public’s imagination.

Swift’s appearance at the game was seen by many as an endorsement, following persistent rumours from numerous NFL commentators and a large section of her fan base suggesting a potential relationship between her and Kelce. Neither of them has publicly acknowledged any romantic connection. However, during an ESPN interview the previous week, Kelce mentioned that he found the mounting interest surrounding their relationship quite amusing. He compared the situation to the classic children’s game “Telephone”, where stories get altered as they are passed along. He emphasized the fact that people are largely clueless about the real scenario.

The root of these rumours can be traced back to earlier in the month, when Kelce, on his podcast ‘New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce’, shared an anecdote. He narrated how he had attempted to share his phone number with Swift through a friendship bracelet he had crafted for her at one of her ‘Eras’ tour concerts. He expressed to his brother, Jason, his disappointment upon discovering that Swift doesn’t usually engage in conversations before or after her performances, prioritizing the preservation of her voice for the lengthy setlists she performs. This meant that he was unable to personally hand over the bracelet he had made for her, which left him feeling a tad dismayed.

Nevertheless, during that ESPN interview, Kelce hinted at another attempt to woo the singer. He recounted telling Swift about how he had witnessed her electrifying performance at Arrowhead and playfully suggested she might want to reciprocate by watching him in action at the same venue to determine which event was more exhilarating. He concluded with a hint of mystery, suggesting that time would reveal what lay ahead for the two of them.

India destroyed the Australian team, all set to enter the CWC as favourites

Preyensha Srivastava |

Team India, which was looking unprepared for the World Cup a couple of months ago, has seemed to complete all its preparations before the tournament starts. Playing its last series before the World Cup, the Men in Blue have demolished the mighty Australians. In a three-match ODI series, India is up two-nil. With Gill looking in sublime touch, Rahul and Kishan stabilizing the middle order, and Shami leading the bowling lineup from the front, India seems to have ticked all boxes.

In the second match-up between the best and the second-best ODI sides in the world, Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first on a flat Indore track. A pitch, suitable for batting, had nothing to offer the bowlers. India came in with one change, Bumrah rested as Krishna got some game time. Australia continues to change their team, with debutant Spencer Johnson, Alex Carey, and Hazlewood in for Captain Pat Cummins, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Marsh. Having put to bat, Gill and Gaikwad opened the batting for India and started with a bang, bashing Johnson for four on the very first bowl of the match. Hazlewood with the counterattack, got Gaikwad up front.

Iyer walked out to bat and started showing his class right away. He smashed five boundaries in the first 14 balls he faced. As the team approached fifty, the opening batter started to shift gears. GIll hit the Australians all around the park, soon completing his half-century. Iyer, who was already playing aggressive shorts also joined the party, completing his fifty. The next 15 overs were a display of fearless batting by the Indians. Both Gill and Iyer scored tons and got out after. The new batters Rahul and Kishan did not allow the flow of runs to slow down, followed by a quick-fire 71-run knock from SKY. India set a difficult 400-run target for the Aussies.

As the Aussie innings commenced, they were welcomed by Krishna’s brilliant opening spell. Prasidh Krishna dismissed opener Matt Short and Captain Smith, as the Kangaroos were reeling at a score of 10/2. Warner and Labuschagne were not in a mood to give up and started rebuilding the innings. The rain interrupted and the match was reduced to 33 overs with the revised target being 317. Despite efforts from Warner, Labuschagne, Abbott and Hazlewood. The Australians fell 100 runs short of the target and India won the match by 99 runs.

The absence of the star players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Bumrah, and Siraj did not trouble the Indian team. The Men in Blue looked quite confident and all set for the CWC next month. Despite all these positives, a small issue of concern for the hosts would be Shardul Thakur. Thakur, who comes in as a fast-bowling allrounder has been leaking a lot of runs in the middle overs. Although he delays the tail of the Indian batting lineup and is a solid batter at number eight, his batting has not been tested yet. Shardul might turn out to be a major concern for the Indian team as they enter the CWC 2023. Hardik Pandya may replace him, as he comes into the side for the third ODI.

Australia stunned England in the Final, The rise of a new cricketing giant

Preyensha Srivastava |

The results of the 83 World Cup changed the approach of sports lovers in India, suddenly cricket became the most liked sport in the country. The winners of 83 received a grand welcome from the countrymen and were treated as heroes, they encouraged the youth of India to join sports and gained respect. Now, India is waiting to host the mega event and repeat its triumph. Finally, after four years, the fourth event was to be played in India. After the first three successful events hosted by England, the Cricket World Cup now changed its venue to the Sub-continent.

In continuation to our series ‘A Countdown to World Cup’ today we are sharing the story of a new cricketing giant where Australia beats the arch-rivals England in the finals.

World Cup of 1987

The 1987 Cricket World Cup (officially known as the Dependency Cup 1987 for sponsorship reasons) was the fourth Cricket World Cup. It was held from October 8 to November 8, 1987, in India and Pakistan – the first such tournament outside England. The one-day format remained the same as the eight-team tournament in 1983, except for the reduction in the number of overs per team from 60 to 50, the current standard for all ODIs.

Format

The format of the competition was two subgroups of four teams, where each team played twice in 50 games. The top two teams in each group advanced to the semi-finals, where the two winners advanced to the final. All matches were played during the day and for the last time in the tournament’s history, teams appeared in traditional white attire and used the traditional red balls used in Test/First Class matches.

Semi-finals

Australia won the toss and elected to bat, Australian batsmen started very well and scored smoothly. David Boon 65 off 91 top scorer and shared 82 runs stands with DM Jones. Australia looked very good to reach 300 with a strong batting effort,  but Imran Khan claimed 3 wickets for 17 runs in 5 overs and stopped Australia to 267 in 50 overs. Pakistan had a poor start and fell to 3/38. Imran Khan 58 and Javed Miandad 70, shared 112 runs from 156 balls. However, with a required run rate of 7.87 at the time of Miandad’s fall, the incoming batsmen had too much to do and Pakistan lost 6/99 as they were bowled out for 249. Earlier, Steve Waugh scored an 18-run in the 50th over of Saleem Jaffar and ironically, Pakistan lost the match by 18 runs.

India won the toss and elected to field. After 2/79, Graham Gooch 115 and captain Mike Gatting 56 shared a 117-run partnership in 19 overs. When Gooch was finally bowled, another 51 runs had been added and England had reached 254 in 50 overs. India got off to a poor start and fell to 3/73. The middle order smoothly top-scored with Mohammed Azharuddin 74. Before Eddie Hemmings removed Azharuddin lbw, India was 5/204, needing 50 runs from the last 10 overs with 5 wickets in hand and it looked like the game was going to be very tight. However, India’s lower order collapsed and lost 5/15. India was eventually bowled out for 219 in 45.3 overs, giving England both a place in the final and revenge for their loss to India in the World Cup semi-final four years earlier in England.

Finals

Australia won the toss and elected to bat. With David Boon 75 off 125 balls, Australia posted 253/5 in 50 overs. Mike Veletta fired 45 off 31 balls at the end of the innings as Australia scored 65 runs from the last six overs. In reply, England lost the opener Tim Robinson off the first ball for a duck. Bill Athey 58 scored and England was close to winning when captain Mike Gatting 41 off 45 balls surrendered the initiative and lost the wicket. 69 runs were required in 13 overs when the partnership ended, Allan Lamb 45 also had a brilliant innings, but it was to no avail when the run rate required by England began to gather. After England did not score in the last 17 runs of the final, the trophy went to Australia.
