India destroyed the Australian team, all set to enter the CWC as favourites

Preyensha Srivastava |

Team India, which was looking unprepared for the World Cup a couple of months ago, has seemed to complete all its preparations before the tournament starts. Playing its last series before the World Cup, the Men in Blue have demolished the mighty Australians. In a three-match ODI series, India is up two-nil. With Gill looking in sublime touch, Rahul and Kishan stabilizing the middle order, and Shami leading the bowling lineup from the front, India seems to have ticked all boxes.

In the second match-up between the best and the second-best ODI sides in the world, Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first on a flat Indore track. A pitch, suitable for batting, had nothing to offer the bowlers. India came in with one change, Bumrah rested as Krishna got some game time. Australia continues to change their team, with debutant Spencer Johnson, Alex Carey, and Hazlewood in for Captain Pat Cummins, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Marsh. Having put to bat, Gill and Gaikwad opened the batting for India and started with a bang, bashing Johnson for four on the very first bowl of the match. Hazlewood with the counterattack, got Gaikwad up front.

Iyer walked out to bat and started showing his class right away. He smashed five boundaries in the first 14 balls he faced. As the team approached fifty, the opening batter started to shift gears. GIll hit the Australians all around the park, soon completing his half-century. Iyer, who was already playing aggressive shorts also joined the party, completing his fifty. The next 15 overs were a display of fearless batting by the Indians. Both Gill and Iyer scored tons and got out after. The new batters Rahul and Kishan did not allow the flow of runs to slow down, followed by a quick-fire 71-run knock from SKY. India set a difficult 400-run target for the Aussies.

As the Aussie innings commenced, they were welcomed by Krishna’s brilliant opening spell. Prasidh Krishna dismissed opener Matt Short and Captain Smith, as the Kangaroos were reeling at a score of 10/2. Warner and Labuschagne were not in a mood to give up and started rebuilding the innings. The rain interrupted and the match was reduced to 33 overs with the revised target being 317. Despite efforts from Warner, Labuschagne, Abbott and Hazlewood. The Australians fell 100 runs short of the target and India won the match by 99 runs.

The absence of the star players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Bumrah, and Siraj did not trouble the Indian team. The Men in Blue looked quite confident and all set for the CWC next month. Despite all these positives, a small issue of concern for the hosts would be Shardul Thakur. Thakur, who comes in as a fast-bowling allrounder has been leaking a lot of runs in the middle overs. Although he delays the tail of the Indian batting lineup and is a solid batter at number eight, his batting has not been tested yet. Shardul might turn out to be a major concern for the Indian team as they enter the CWC 2023. Hardik Pandya may replace him, as he comes into the side for the third ODI.

Australia stunned England in the Final, The rise of a new cricketing giant

Preyensha Srivastava |

The results of the 83 World Cup changed the approach of sports lovers in India, suddenly cricket became the most liked sport in the country. The winners of 83 received a grand welcome from the countrymen and were treated as heroes, they encouraged the youth of India to join sports and gained respect. Now, India is waiting to host the mega event and repeat its triumph. Finally, after four years, the fourth event was to be played in India. After the first three successful events hosted by England, the Cricket World Cup now changed its venue to the Sub-continent.

In continuation to our series ‘A Countdown to World Cup’ today we are sharing the story of a new cricketing giant where Australia beats the arch-rivals England in the finals.

World Cup of 1987

The 1987 Cricket World Cup (officially known as the Dependency Cup 1987 for sponsorship reasons) was the fourth Cricket World Cup. It was held from October 8 to November 8, 1987, in India and Pakistan – the first such tournament outside England. The one-day format remained the same as the eight-team tournament in 1983, except for the reduction in the number of overs per team from 60 to 50, the current standard for all ODIs.

Format

The format of the competition was two subgroups of four teams, where each team played twice in 50 games. The top two teams in each group advanced to the semi-finals, where the two winners advanced to the final. All matches were played during the day and for the last time in the tournament’s history, teams appeared in traditional white attire and used the traditional red balls used in Test/First Class matches.

Semi-finals

Australia won the toss and elected to bat, Australian batsmen started very well and scored smoothly. David Boon 65 off 91 top scorer and shared 82 runs stands with DM Jones. Australia looked very good to reach 300 with a strong batting effort,  but Imran Khan claimed 3 wickets for 17 runs in 5 overs and stopped Australia to 267 in 50 overs. Pakistan had a poor start and fell to 3/38. Imran Khan 58 and Javed Miandad 70, shared 112 runs from 156 balls. However, with a required run rate of 7.87 at the time of Miandad’s fall, the incoming batsmen had too much to do and Pakistan lost 6/99 as they were bowled out for 249. Earlier, Steve Waugh scored an 18-run in the 50th over of Saleem Jaffar and ironically, Pakistan lost the match by 18 runs.

India won the toss and elected to field. After 2/79, Graham Gooch 115 and captain Mike Gatting 56 shared a 117-run partnership in 19 overs. When Gooch was finally bowled, another 51 runs had been added and England had reached 254 in 50 overs. India got off to a poor start and fell to 3/73. The middle order smoothly top-scored with Mohammed Azharuddin 74. Before Eddie Hemmings removed Azharuddin lbw, India was 5/204, needing 50 runs from the last 10 overs with 5 wickets in hand and it looked like the game was going to be very tight. However, India’s lower order collapsed and lost 5/15. India was eventually bowled out for 219 in 45.3 overs, giving England both a place in the final and revenge for their loss to India in the World Cup semi-final four years earlier in England.

Finals

Australia won the toss and elected to bat. With David Boon 75 off 125 balls, Australia posted 253/5 in 50 overs. Mike Veletta fired 45 off 31 balls at the end of the innings as Australia scored 65 runs from the last six overs. In reply, England lost the opener Tim Robinson off the first ball for a duck. Bill Athey 58 scored and England was close to winning when captain Mike Gatting 41 off 45 balls surrendered the initiative and lost the wicket. 69 runs were required in 13 overs when the partnership ended, Allan Lamb 45 also had a brilliant innings, but it was to no avail when the run rate required by England began to gather. After England did not score in the last 17 runs of the final, the trophy went to Australia.

Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam passed unanimously in the Parliament

Preyensha Srivastava |

Thursday, 21st September will be remembered as a momentous day in the history of the Indian parliament, as on this day the upper house of the parliament gave a clear nod to the 128th amendment of the Indian constitution. The historical Women’s Reservation Bill has been passed unanimously in Rajya Sabha and it had already got a clear passage from Lok Sabha by a two-third majority on Wednesday.  The bill is also known as the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ which calls for the reservation of one-third or 33% of seats in Lok Sabha and the state legislative assemblies.

The bill will be remembered as the first bill to pass in the new building in both houses. It Secured 214 votes in its favour, with no one opposing the bill in Rajya Sabha. Only two members of the AIMIM opposed the bill in the Lok Sabha. The Nari Shakti Vandana Adhiniyam will be implemented after the census and the delimitation process.

Prime Minister Modi was also present in the upper house at the time of voting, which was underway at night. The PM thanked all the members of the house for their support of the bill, later on, he posed for a group photograph with the female members of the house. PM in his speech said “A decisive moment in our nation’s democratic journey! Congratulations to 140 million Indians. I thank all the Rajya Sabha MPs who voted for Nari Shakti Vanda Adhiniyam. Such unanimous support pleases.”

“With the passage of this bill in Parliament, we are ushering in an era of stronger representation and empowerment of women in India. It is not just a piece of legislation; it is a tribute to the countless women who have made our nation. India is enriched by their resilience and contribution. As we celebrate today, we are reminded of the strength, courage and indomitable spirit of all women in our nation. This historic step is a commitment to ensure that their voices are heard more effectively,” added PM Modi.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar congratulated the members and said “It is a historic achievement. This is the first bill approved in the new Parliament. After the Upper House passed the bill. Congratulations everyone. It also happens to be the day of Prime Minister Modi’s birthday according to Hindu calendar.” Dhankhar said after the bill was passed.

Several other BJP leaders also shared greetings messages to congratulate the citizens on social media. Opposition female leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Chaturvedi, and Mahua Moitra raised questions on the government that why this bill will not be implemented with immediate effect.

AP Dhillon & Sidhu Moosewala’s Insta page responds to ongoing Punjabi singers’ controversy

Preyensha Srivastava |

Around 13 hours ago singer Shubh (aka Shubneet Singh) broke his silence about the recent controversy amid the ongoing diplomatic row between India and Canada.  due to which he has been facing backlash and that has also led to the cancellation of his India tour. In the midst of these events, singer AP Dhillon has conveyed a message advocating for “promoting love instead of hatred.” The singer, who is based in Canada, shared this message on Instagram Stories one day after Shubh’s Still Rollin India Tour was cancelled due to allegations of his support for the Khalistan cause. Additionally, the Instagram page of the late Sidhu Moosewala also addressed the public outcry surrounding Shubh.

AP Dhillon’s Message

AP Dhillon conveyed on Instagram Stories that he attempts to avoid the frenzy of social media since he believes that, regardless of his actions or words, they might be twisted to someone’s preferred narrative, furthering division. He expressed the challenge artists face in concentrating on their art due to the fear of unintentionally exacerbating division.

The singer who has been residing in Canada since 2015 and recently visited India, further mentioned that artists often find their public images being manipulated by political and special interest groups for their own objectives, even though artists aim to produce art that touches people universally, irrespective of their background or identity.

He ended by emphasizing the importance of promoting love over hatred, encouraging individual thinking and resisting the sway of divisive influences. He reminded everyone of the unity that binds all and highlighted the harm division has caused, stressing that unity holds the key to a better future.

Message From Late Sidhu Moosewala’s Page

Late Sidhu Moosewala’s Instagram page expressed support for Shubh, drawing parallels between Shubh’s situation and Sidhu’s own experiences. The statement conveyed that Sidhu, who consistently advocated for his people, was unfairly branded a terrorist without substantial evidence. Sadly, Shubh found himself in a similar predicament, facing a sudden wave of national hostility due to a well-intentioned Instagram Story.

The statement raised a thought-provoking question about why artists from minority backgrounds often confront adversity, whether it be through persecution or attempts to silence them. It emphasized that music transcends caste and religion and lamented the loss of Sidhu due to the prevailing hatred in society. The statement concluded by questioning when this cycle of hatred would come to an end, highlighting the need for change and unity.

Cancellation Of Shubh’s India Tour After Backlash

On Wednesday, BookMyShow made an announcement regarding the cancellation of Shubh’s Still Rollin Tour in India. They conveyed through a tweet, “The Still Rollin Tour for India by singer Shubhneet Singh has been cancelled. In response, BookMyShow has initiated a full refund process for all ticket purchasers, with refunds expected to reflect in the original transaction source accounts within 7-10 working days.”

The ticket-booking platform faced criticism on social media for hosting Shubh, who had been associated with allegations of sympathizing with Khalistani sentiments after a controversial Instagram Stories post earlier this year. In this post, Shubh reportedly shared a distorted map of India with the caption “Pray for Punjab.” Additionally, it was noted that Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and others unfollowed Shubh on Instagram amidst the backlash.

On Thursday, Shubh expressed his disappointment at the tour’s cancellation through a statement on Instagram. He expressed his dedication to preparing for this tour over the past two months and his eagerness to perform in India. He further explained his intentions behind sharing that story and expressed how his message had been misinterpreted.

CWC’23: The India’s Road To Knockout

Preyensha Srivastava |

The cricket fans in India will be excited and overwhelmed as the biggest Cricket event in the world is about to come to the country. The cricket giant is going to host the Cricket World Cup 2023, which will commence on 5th October, with the match-up between England and New Zealand. The Indian Cricket Team will play its first match against the Five-time world champions Australia on 8th October 2023.  The Men-in-Blue, who will be eager to perform in every match, are favorites to win the trophy as they are hosting the tournament and it is difficult to defeat India at home.

Here are all the fixtures of the hosts:

IND vs. AUS: 8 October 2023

For their first match-up, India will take on the mighty Australians at Chepauk. The Australians have an edge over India when it comes to World Cup Cricket, in the 12 face-offs between the two the Aussies have defeated India in eight matches while India has won only four. So, it will be a delight to watch for the fans, whether the Cummins-led Australia would give a tough time to India or if Rohit’s men would shatter Australian hopes.

IND vs. AFG: 11 October 2023

India will face off against the underdog Afghanistan on 11 October at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. In the last edition of the World Cup, the two sides first played against each other. In a close match, India defeated the Afghans by 11 runs, as Shami became the second Indian to take a hat-trick. It will be interesting to see who will emerge victorious in this contest.

IND vs. PAK: 14 October 2023

The biggest rivalry in the world of cricket is all set to happen as India takes on the arch-rivals Pakistan in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. India has quite an impressive record against Pakistan in World Cups, in the seven head-to-head encounters Pakistan has never defeated India. In the recent few matches also India seems to have an upper hand over the Men-in-green.

IND vs. BAN: 19 October 2023

India will face the unpredictable Bangladesh on 19 October at Pune’s MCA stadium. The Bangladeshi Team has always been a surprise package and on a good day, they can upset any giant of world cricket, like they did in the 2015 World Cup with England. India has been a brute force against Bangladesh in the World Cups, the hosts have three out of four matches played against Bangladesh. So it would be a big positive for India if they make the tally to 4-1.

IND vs. NZ: 22 October 2023

As the tournament advances, India will face the Blackcaps at the HPCA, Dharamsala. The Men-in-Black have always turned out to be the knockout hunters for India, in the eight World Cup matches head-to-head played between the two, India has won only three while New Zealand has five points. Out of these five one defeat has been in knockouts. Will India be able to give New Zealand a taste of their own medicine or will New Zealand be able to bounce back stronger? It will be a contest to watch.

IND vs. ENG: 29 October 2023

Ekana Stadium in Lucknow will be the home to the India-England match-up on 29 October. The defending champions have been in good form, as the star player Ben Stokes calls off his retirement. India head-to-head against England has always been a contest to watch in the World Cup. India has won three of the eight games while England has won four, with one game resulting in a tie.

IND vs. SL: 2 November 2023

India taking on Sri Lanka in Wankhede reminds me of the 2011 World Cup Final, the hosts will once again take on the odd performers Sri Lanka at Wankhede on 2 November 2023. India and Sri Lanka have a balanced score of 4-4 when it comes to head-to-head in world cups. Defeating India at home is a difficult task, and it will be interesting to watch as the Lankan-Indian rivalry continues.

IND vs. SA: 5 November 2023

The Proteas will play against India at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 5 November. India was unable to defeat South Africa in World Cups before 2015. Since the 2015 World Cup, India has had an upper hand over the Proteas. Out of the five games, South Africa has won three, while India has won two.

IND vs. NED: 12 November 2023

India will play its last league match against the newcomers Netherlands at the bowlers’ graveyard M.Chinnaswamy Bangalore on 12 November. India has faced the Netherlands only twice in a World Cup and has won on both occasions. The last time the country played against the Netherlands in a WC game, India lifted the trophy.

Zelenskyy addressed the UN General Assembly, Here are the Key Points You Need to Know

Preyensha Srivastava |

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly ahead of the International Peace Day Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s “unprovoked aggression.” Zelenskyy’s appearance at the council helped him turn it into a direct conflict at the highest level with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei V. Lavrov and his American counterpart, Antony J. Blinken (Secretary of State). He also targets all the senior ambassadors and representatives who represent the case of their countries over the invasion of Ukraine. He is seeking support from world leaders in New York on Wednesday.

In his speech, Zelenskyy stated, “I Welcome everyone, Honourable Secretary General! Co-leaders! Who support the common work on peace and I promise by uniting, we can ensure just peace for all nations, because unity can prevent wars. This lobby has seen many wars, but not as an active defender against aggression. In many cases it was the fear of war that was loudest here, the last war – the war after which no one gathered in the living room anymore.”

Conflict between countries with nuclear weapons turned the Third World War into a nuclear war. Other wars seemed less frightening compared to the threat of so-called superpowers firing their nuclear stockpiles. Thus, the 20th century taught the world to refrain from using weapons of mass destruction – not to deploy, not to spread, not to threaten and not to test, but to promote complete nuclear disarmament. Honestly, it’s a good strategy.

Zelenskyy told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that if Russia does not break its veto power, the UN will be powerless to resolve conflicts around the world, adding to growing calls for a review of the body’s actions. Ukraine’s soldiers are doing with their blood what the UN Security Council should do by voting. Zelenskyy said on Wednesday, arguing that “the aggressor’s veto power is what led the UN to deadlock.”

Majorly in his long-hour speech Zelenskyy widely criticised the unlawful invasion of Ukraine by Russia, during his speech the Russian ambassador swiped his mobile phone. He also suggested the UN make some changes in the Veto Power using the procedure. His speech was applauded by the members with a standing ovation.

India suspended visa services for Canadians indefinitely amid tensions

Preyensha Srivastava |

The growing bilateral dispute between India and Canada is showing no sign of abating. In the middle of ongoing conflict, the Indian government has today banned the Visa services for Canadians, indefinitely alleging security threats for diplomats. Indian Visa service provider BLS Internationals posted a message from India’s mission blaming “operational reasons” for the decision, but still no formal announcement has been made. An Indian official just confirmed the decision of BLS International but denied making any further comments on the matter.

The Canadian portal of Indian visa outsourcing provider BLS International notes that visa services have been suspended since September 21, starting today. The message says: Important Notice from Embassy of India: Due to operational reasons, Indian visa services are suspended from September 21, 2023, until further notice. For more information please refer to the BLS website. In practice, this means that visas will no longer be issued by the Indian mission in Canada, which primarily serves Canadian citizens.

The move came a day after India issued an advisory urging its citizens travelling to or residing in Canada to exercise “extreme caution” regarding “anti-Indian activities and politically sanctioned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada.” There are 1.4 million people of Indian origin living in Canada, representing 3.7% of the country’s population as of the 2021 census. India also sends the most international students to Canada, accounting for 40 per cent of all international students in 2022, at 320,000.

India and Canada are locked in an international dispute over Ottawa’s claim that it has “credible allegations” linking New Delhi agents to the killing of pro-Khalistan Sikh terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Indian government strongly rejected the accusation as absurd and motivated. It is not yet clear if the visa suspension is related to the row.

As relations between India and Canada deteriorate due to the ongoing bilateral dispute, another Khalistani terrorist is murdered. Sukhdool Singh was shot dead in the Canadian city of Winnipeg late on Wednesday night. The Khalistani terrorist had links with the Bambiha gang and was killed in the same manner as Nijjar. Sukhdool Singh Gill aka Sukha Duneke fled to Canada in 2017 after being accused of murder and extortion.
