Ahead of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls, scheduled later this year, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), has planned a public meeting in Jabalpur. Jagat Bahadur Singh, the Mayor of Jabalpur and a Congress leader expressed confidence that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s roadshow would cover a 2-kilometre stretch within Jabalpur and attract a crowd of 1.5-2 lakh people. Singh believes that the people of Jabalpur division, consisting of eight districts, are dissatisfied with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He predicts a strong Congress performance in the Mahakoshal region during the upcoming Assembly polls.

The Congress party lost power in Madhya Pradesh in March 2020 due to a rebellion by a group of MLAs. After the 2018 Assembly polls, where the Congress emerged as the largest party, their government led by Kamal Nath collapsed after 15 months, triggered by a rebellion led by Jyotiraditya Scindia, who now serves as a Union minister. Over 20 loyal MLAs also joined the rebellion. Subsequently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regained control of the state.

In the last election, the Congress secured 114 seats out of the 230-member Assembly, while the BJP won 109 seats. However, the BJP’s seat count increased to 127 after by-polls were held in nearly two dozen constituencies due to resignations by sitting MLAs. As a result, the Congress’ tally decreased to 93 seats. BJP has ruled in Madhya Pradesh since 2003 except for the period between December 2018 and March 2020.

Donald Trump, a former U.S. president, has claimed that he has been charged with mishandling secret papers at his Florida residence. On Wednesday Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia spoke on the need of ensuring that airline ticket prices that have surged (for a plethora of reasons) ever since domestic air travel resumed post-Covid lockdown remain within a certain limit. Industry experts last month told Hindustan Times that the reason behind increased travel during the summer holiday season could have enticed airlines to hike prices yet again that too almost 50 per cent in some cases. The experts also cited Go First as a reason for an increase in fares as the collapse of the airline shrunk the number of tickets available and ultimately led to an increase in price.

In Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, a gangster was shot and murdered outside a courthouse, and a police officer was wounded, sparking new concerns about the situation of law and order in the region. According to reports, the shooter was dressed as a lawyer.

In a video, gang leader Sanjiv Maheshwari, also known as Sanjiv Jeeva, who oversaw a criminal organisation in western UP, could be seen slumped to the ground while medical personnel worked to stem his bleeding from bullet wounds.

Right now, it’s unclear if there were many shooters. According to reports, the solicitors in attendance at the court were able to hold onto one of the assailants and turn him over to the police. 

The criminal was fired at as he entered the courthouse while being hauled to a municipal court in the Kaiserbagh neighbourhood of the city. He was wearing a green shirt and blue jeans.

Sanjiv Jeeva was the leader of various criminal organisations in the state and was accused in a dozen criminal cases. According to estimates, there were at least 50 criminal cases against him in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the many years he had spent behind bars. 

According to some sources, he was also friends with the mafia from eastern Uttar Pradesh, such Mukhtar Ansari. It’s unclear how the assailant entered the courthouse with a handgun in tow. Two months have passed after mobster Atiq Ahmed was fatally murdered by police after being taken into custody.
