Afghanistan crisis: G20 leaders vow to avert economic disaster

The India Saga Saga |

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, stated that the country should not be allowed to “descend into chaos.” The virtual summit came as the United Nations urged world leaders to invest billions of dollars in Afghanistan’s economy. US Vice President Joe Biden emphasized that aid should be delivered through independent international organizations rather than directly to the ruling Taliban.

But, so far, the money has largely been counted in millions of dollars, just to provide emergency food and medicine. Pledges include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s promise to give €1 billion ($1.15 billion; £850 million) to Afghanistan and neighbouring countries taking in refugees.

Mrs. Merkel, who did not run for re-election last month and will resign as chancellor once a new government is formed, reaffirmed Germany’s €600 million pledge.

“None of us has anything to gain if the entire monetary system in Afghanistan collapses or the financial system collapses,” she told reporters. “Then humanitarian aid can no longer be provided. Of course, it’s never easy to draw the line, so to speak, but to look on as 40 million people descend into chaos because there’s no electricity supply or financial system – that cannot and must not be the goal of the international community.”

The India Saga Saga |

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a surge in the markets and hugely reshaped consumption habits. Growth in 2021 was driven meaningfully by volume, because of elevated consumer demand during the pandemic. Buyers decided to the make do with physical and digital support in order to face lockdowns.

Syed Ali Asgar Razvi, the renowned entrepreneur who is currently heading the fast moving consumer goods business in which his family has been involved in for decades, is highly hopeful about the future of consumer goods industry in the successive years. He feels that as the year of 2021 had been a victorious advancement for them, they must continue to invest in winning brands that are in attractive categories in order to keep this winning streak going.

“The companies must prepare for a world that looks very different from today’s, as it is clearly driven by the ever changing trends. We need to rebuild our talent and potential thereby processing to adapt to a shift in the upcoming market. In the later years, upheavals in global consumer and supply markets are likely to produce as many losers as well as winners among consumer goods companies. We must prepare ourselves to be nimble enough to adapt to new consumer demands. Especially putting a huge importance on increasing online presence”, says Syed Ali.

As Syed Ali observes the recent technological support that has surged in these years, he believes that slightly automating the work in the industry and making using of artificial intelligence will significantly reduce the need for physical and manual skills as well as basic cognitive skills. This will inturn create new types of work with job growth in a range of high-skill roles. Partial automation should be kept mandatory as the workload keeps getting bigger with increasing consumption.

He adds to his idea for a brighter future by saying, “The companies must get ready to venture out of their comfort zones to explore new markets which will eventually help them to reap rich rewards. We must create strategies to manage the prices of their inputs. Using the channels of social media and online marketing as I mentioned earlier. They should be considered crucial for brand-building.”

Keeping an eye on the fluctuating market values, he also feels that there will be no development if you stay at the same place for a long time. Growth comes only when people are ready to start walking from their place of stability and get ready to take risks. “We need to keep our brands interesting. India’s FMCG sector is worth $35 billion and is the fourth largest of its economy. To be among the top tiers of the industry we always have to keep moving and change according to the demands of time and buyers”, adds Syed Ali.

Amitabh Bachchan Refuses To Endorse Pan Masala Brand, Despite Receiving A Fee

The India Saga Saga |

A shocking turn of events occurred today, on the occasion of his 79th birthday. Amitabh Bachchan has refused to endorse a pan masala brand and has canceled the contract. He has also returned the fee he was paid for the promotion.

The official statement from the “the office of Mr Amitabh Bachchan” reads, “Kamala Pasand … a few days after the commercial was aired, Mr Bachchan contacted the brand and stepped out of it last week. Upon checking why this sudden move – it was revealed that when Mr Bachchan became associated with the brand, he wasn’t aware that it falls under surrogate advertising. Mr Bachchan has terminated the contract with the Brand, has written to them his termination and has returned the money received for the promotion.”

This comes after a national anti-tobacco organization asked Amitabh Bachchan to withdraw from the campaign, claiming that it would encourage young people to become addicted to tobacco.

A fan had also written to him on Facebook, “Hello sir, I have just one question for you. What is the need for you to advertise a paan masala brand? Then what is the difference between you and these petty artists?”

Responding to him, Amitabh Bachchan wrote, “I ask for your forgiveness. If someone is doing well in their industry, then one should not wonder ‘why am I associated with it?’ If that is a business, then we should think about our business too. Now, you feel that I should not have done this, but by doing this, I get paid and there are many people working in our profession, who are workers, and in a way they too get work and money. Besides, gentleman, please don’t use the word ‘tatpunjiya’. It doesn’t look good coming from you and it does not suit all the artists who belong to our industry.”

Surrogate advertising, for the uninitiated, is a type of advertising that promotes prohibited products in the guise of another product.

Lakhimpur Kheri Violence: Farmers to observe ‘Shaheed Kisan Diwas’ today

The India Saga Saga |

Farmers protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws will observe ‘Shaheed Kisan Diwas’ on Tuesday (October 12) to pay their tribute to the four farmers who lost their lives in the Lakhimpur Violence.

Farmers who are protesting against the Centre’s three farm bills for the past 10 months will now observe ‘Shaheed Kisan Diwas’ on October 12 to pay their befitting tribute to the farmers who lost their lives in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Four farmers passed away after a car belonging to the convoy of the Union Minister of State (MoS) Ajay Kumar Misra’s son Ashish Kumar Misra ran over the farmers in the Lakhimpur Kheri district. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday, in a statement, said, “October 12 (tomorrow) will be marked as Shaheed Kisan Diwas all over India on SKM’s call. Tomorrow, the ‘antim ardaas’ of the martyrs of the Lakhimpur Kheri massacre will take place in Tikunia at Sahebjada Inter College. Preparations are being made for the same and tens of thousands of farmers are expected to join this prayer meeting.” SKM is the umbrella body of about 40 farmer organistaions.

SKM has appealed to the farmer organisation and progressive groups all across the country to mark the occasion by organising prayer and homage meetings all over the country, followed by candlelight vigils in the evening. The farmers union also urged people to show solidarity with the farmers who lost their life by lighting five candles outside their houses at 8 pm today. SKM also expressed its dismay at no action being taken against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ajay Kumar Misra. Targeting the BJP government at the Centre and the State, the union said, “It is shameful on the part of the Modi government that Ajay Kumari Misra has not been sacked from his ministerial post yet. It was his vehicle that was in the convoy that killed innocent people.”

The umbrella body that has been at the forefront of leading the protest against the Centre’s three farm bills also said that farmers will mark the auspicious occasion of Dussehra by burning the effigies of the BJP leaders on October 15. More than 11 rounds of dialogue have happened till now between the BJP’s Union Government and the protesting farmers but till now there has not been a big breakthrough. The farmer union have not said anything about the four other people who also died in the Lakhimpur Kheri Violence apart from four farmers.

The humanitarian crisis is in the spotlight as Italy hosts the G20 Afghan summit

The India Saga Saga |

On Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi will host a special summit of the Group of 20 major economies to discuss Afghanistan, as fears of a humanitarian disaster grow in the aftermath of the Taliban’s return to power.

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 15, the country, which was already suffering from drought and severe poverty as a result of decades of war, has seen its economy all but collapse, raising the prospect of a refugee exodus.

The video conference, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (1100 GMT), will focus on aid needs, security concerns, and ways to ensure safe passage abroad for thousands of Western-allied Afghans who remain in the country.

“With winter approaching, it is critical to provide humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable groups, particularly women and children,” said a G20 official familiar with the agenda. The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, is expected to attend the summit, emphasising the UN’s central role in addressing the crisis – in part because many countries do not want to establish direct relations with the Taliban.

Italy, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20, has worked hard to organise the meeting, despite the disparate group’s widely held views on how to deal with Afghanistan following the chaotic US withdrawal from Kabul.

“The main problem is that Western countries want to put their finger on the way the Taliban run the country, how they treat women for example, while China and Russia on the other hand have a non-interference foreign policy,” said a diplomatic source close to the matter.

China has publicly demanded that Afghanistan’s economic sanctions be lifted and that billions of dollars in Afghan international assets be unfrozen and returned to Kabul. It was unclear whether or not this would be discussed on Tuesday.

Scientists find out that Pluto atmosphere is disappearing

The India Saga Saga |

Pluto, which lost its status as a planet a few years back is confronted with a new problem. Scientists have found out that the atmosphere is going through a strange transformation. The icy dwarf celestial body which lies over 4.8 billion kilometres away from the earth is moving farther away from the sun.

In the United States and Mexico, telescopes have been used at multiple sites to further study Pluto’s thin atmosphere. Scientists residing at Southwest Research institute carried out research by studying Pluto after it passed in front of a star way back in 2018.

The planet has come to light as it is getting colder and colder since the atmosphere is actually refreezing back on to the surface. The surface pressure and atmospheric density is continually increasing due to a phenomenon known as thermal inertia. But for the past quarter-century, Pluto has been receiving less sunlight due to its farther location from earth.

“The continued persistence of Pluto’s atmosphere suggests that nitrogen ice reservoirs on Pluto’s surface were kept warm by stored heat under the surface. The new data suggests they are starting to cool,” said SwRI Staff Scientist Dr. Leslie Young.

“An analogy to this is the way the sun heats up sand on a beach,” SwRI staff scientist Leslie Young, who studies the interaction between icy solar system bodies and their surfaces and atmospheres, said in the same statement.

“Sunlight is most intense at high noon, but the sand then continues soaking up the heat over the course of the afternoon, so it is hottest in the late afternoon. The continued persistence of Pluto’s atmosphere suggests that nitrogen ice reservoirs on Pluto’s surface were kept warm by stored heat under the surface. The new data suggests they are starting to cool,” Young said.

Planet Pluto is supported by the vapour pressure of its surface ice indicating that small changes in the surface ice temperature leads to the enormous changes in the bulk density of the atmosphere. It took around 248 earth years to complete one full orbit around the earth and the distance varies from its closest point around 30 astronomical units from the sun to 50 AU from the sun.
