SAARC meeting canceled that was going to be held on coming Saturday

The India Saga Saga |

The scheduled meeting of the foreign ministers of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) got canceled due to a lack of concurrence from all member states, sources suggested. The meeting was expected to be held in New York on Saturday. The SAARC is the regional intergovernmental organization of eight countries of South Asia that includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

The member-states refused to entertain Pakistan’s request to acknowledge the Talibaan regime as the new representation of Afghanistan in the meeting. Nepal was going to host the meeting. Further, Pakistan also put forward the demand that no representatives of the ousted Afghan govt should be allowed to attend the meeting that is going to take place on the sidelines of the high-level 76th United-General-Assembly session. Most countries are still not ready to consider the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. India is on the same list and the country is not supporting the Taliban regime. Moreover, the top ministers of the Taliban have been blacklisted by the UN government.

The Nepalese Foreign Ministry issued a communiqué saying that the meet stands canceled owing to “lack of concurrence from all Member States”.  Furthermore, PM Modi at the SCO meeting said, “Taliban is a non-inclusive government and the world must think before accepting or recognizing the regime.

Amir Khan Muttaqi is the new acting foreign minister of the Taliban regime led by Mullah Akhand who is the chief of the most powerful decision-making body ‘ the Rehbari Shura’. There are very few countries that have agreed with the Pakistani decision to recognize the Taliban as the new governing body in Afghanistan.

The SAARC Secretariat was inaugurated in Kathmandu on January 17, 1987. It also has nine observers including China, Iran, the Republic of Korea, Australia, Japan, the European Union, Mauritius, Myanmar, and the US.

Taliban denies any presence of Al-Qaeda militants in Afghanistan

The India Saga Saga |

Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have given a statement saying that there was no evidence of Islamic State or al-Qaeda militants being in the country on Tuesday. This statement has been given days after Islamic State claimed responsibility for bomb attacks in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Since toppling the Western-backed government in Kabul last month, the Taliban have faced pressure from the international community to renounce ties with al-Qaeda, the group behind September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States of America.

At the same time, they have had to deal with a series of attacks claimed by an affiliate of the Islamic State, with which they have been in conflict for several years over a mix of economic and ideological disputes.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected accusations that al-Qaeda maintained a presence in Afghanistan and repeated pledges that there would be no attacks on third countries from Afghanistan from militant movements.

“We do not see anyone in Afghanistan who has anything to do with al-Qaeda,” he told a news conference in Kabul. “We are committed to the fact that, from Afghanistan, there will not be any danger to any country.”

The Taliban were ousted from power by US-led forces in 2001 for refusing to hand over al-Qaeda leaders responsible for the September 11 attacks. They returned to Kabul last month after US forces announced they were leaving and the U.S.-backed government and military collapsed.

The Afghan affiliate of Islamic State, known as Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K), after an old name for the region, first appeared in eastern Afghanistan in 2014 and later made inroads into other areas, particularly the north.

Several years ago, the US military put the group’s strength at about 2,000 fighters, though some Afghan officials at the time estimated the number was higher. It battled US-led foreign forces and the Taliban, for control of smuggling routes while also apparently seeking to build a global Caliphate.

The group claimed responsibility for a series of bomb attacks in the city of Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan at the weekend read more. It also claimed a suicide bomb attack at Kabul airport last month that killed 13 US troops and scores of Afghan civilians who had crowded outside the airport gates. Mujahid denied the movement had any genuine presence in Afghanistan though he said it “invisibly carries out some cowardly attacks”.

BJP turncoat Babul Supriyo meets TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata

The India Saga Saga |

Former Union Minister and Two-time Member of Parliament from Asansol (West Bengal), Babul Supriyo, on Monday, met TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata. This comes two days after Babul had joined the Trinamool Congress on Saturday.

The singer-turned-politician was formally inducted into the TMC/AITC by the party’s National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Alongside Abhishek, Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien was also present.

This comes after Babul, a month ago, announced retirement from active politics. Taking to his Facebook account, he then wrote that he would be quitting from active politics and that he won’t be joining any political party. Recently the two-time BJP MP was shown the door from the Modi 2.0 Cabinet Reshuffle. The singer-turned-politician had been the Union Minister in both the Modi Cabinet in 2014 and 2019 (till reshuffle). One of the major reasons he joined the TMC’s camp is said to be his deteriorating relationship with Dilip Ghosh, BJP Bengal President. Moreover, his security was downgraded recently by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Babul met Mamata on Monday, two days after he was inducted into the Trinamool Congress. After meeting Banerjee, Babul said, “It was great meeting Didi. We had a very good discussion. I thanked her for giving me an opportunity to work for Bengal and serve the people. I am really touched by the affection and warmth of Didi and Abhishek Banerjee.”

Talking about his role, Supriyo told reporters, “I have nothing to say. It is for our party and Mamata Didi to decide. It is her prerogative.”

Babul, praising his new boss said, “I want the captain of our party, Mamata Banerjee to become the Prime Minister in 2024. Opposition plays an important role in a democratic system. Nobody can deny the fact that Mamata Banerjee is among the frontrunners for the prime ministerial post.”

Earlier, on Saturday, as soon as the picture of Babul with Abhishek Banerjee surfaced on the net, there was a storm on social media. A lot of Netizens criticized and trolled him for his decision and called him a betrayer and someone who lacks commitment and loyalty. His former colleagues in the Bengal BJP Unit also targeted him. BJP MP from Barrackpore, Arjun Singh said “I don’t know how he joined the Trinamool Congress as his song ‘Ae Trinamool Aar Na’ is still there. Now, he will sing what and for which party.”

Supriyo is not the first BJP leader to switch the camp, after the BJP’S defeat in recently concluded assembly elections, Mukul Roy, National Vice-President of BJP switched his side. He along with his son joined the Trinamool Congress, a party from which he came.
