In times when Hill stations are becoming the major attraction across India, there’s one that is like a hidden treasure in the heart of Mandi district in Himachal, the place is called Sunder Nagar. The beautiful town of Sunder Nagar is surrounded by beautiful mountains and the beauty of it is just one of the elements that the city offers. To our surprise, the city is not only beautiful but also has some of the sweetest and caring people who want to make sure the progress of the town. One such name is Amit Saini who’s a social worker and is also known for a lot of his ventures in the city. Amit Saini who was born in Sunder Nagar on 3rd May 1992 is a keen social worker whose achievements are perhaps bigger than his heights.

With his keen interest in politics, he started his journey after his post-graduation from the renowned Abhilashi university, then he was assigned as the president of the college due to his unfathomable popularity. Thereafter, his steps to become an ideal leader started from being elected as the General Secretary to the Youth Congress Sunder Nagar in 2013 to the President of Crime and Corruption organization in 2015 followed by becoming the General Secretary of the young congress in the Mandi Parliament in 2018. He was also a media coordinator for the Lok Sabha elections for a leading political party in India. Amit is a very social and caring leader who admires leading by example. His visions are mostly determined by the people around him.

His friends often call him “People’s man” with the kind of connection he makes instantly with his peers. Amit is supported a lot by the people around him since he has been able to derive great results for them. Amit’s primary vision is the growth of the town. As a kid, I wanted to be a Petroleum Engineer, as a strong passion was instilled in me, and following my father’s footsteps became my dream. After school, I attended college with a predefined goal and path. Little did I know that life had different plans for me, and I would drop out of college and rationalize with my parents to pursue social work. It was indeed a battleground back at home, but aura, the guiding light was so intense that I could not deter from my path, I knew if I don’t do it now, I won’t ever, and I lived by these lines: “When I die, I want to be remembered for the life I lived, not the money I made.”

I am a person who isn’t afraid to live his life drenched in every shade and colour of the rainbow and walk the untrodden paths. My parents questioned my decision to opt for social work, and their main concern was how I would earn a living for myself. The fears of my parents were a genuine concern. Still, I left no stone unturned to gain their vote of confidence by displaying exemplary work in my first campaign of stationary distribution and computer system installation in government schools.

Since 2015, JOY has been working with youth and school-going children in different capacities. We started with Education Camps, Blood Donation Camps, Health Camps and transcended to Environment-Conscious and Sustainable Living Campaigns like Plantation drives, beat plastic pollution awareness campaigns and paper bag making workshops, Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives, Clean up drives at Beatles Ashram Rishikesh, Clothes Distribution drive at AryanagarBasti, Menstrual Awareness Campaign, Sanitary Pad Distribution drive, LED bulb distribution in the uphills, Animal Welfare work, and other such activities.

In 2020, the pandemic gripped the world and shook its foundation, so we strategized to do our part by helping in providing Covid Relief. 

After working tirelessly during the second wave of COVID-19, the founder of Dehradun-based NGO Just Open Yourself (JOY), Jai Sharma, has commenced with the initiative of adopting 100 children who lost both their parents to the deadly virus.

Speaking about the adoption drive, the Founder of JOY, Jay Sharma, said, “When the second wave of COVID-19 started, we encountered five such families in the initial two weeks where both the parents had died, and the child/children were left alone at home. A few of these children were of classes 4th-5th age group, one was in 12th, and the rest were small in age. At that moment, it hit our mind that this unfortunate scenario was inevitable, and we were to come across more such cases as the pandemic rose.”

Adding further, he said, “To date, we have adopted 20 orphaned children under JOY and are taking care of their food, medicine, and finances, among other important aspects. Out of these 20 children, only two are from Dehradun, and the rest belong to the hills. Within a week, we will be completing our target of adopting 50 children, followed by 100 children eventually. I, JaiSharma from JOY, am there to support these children by any means possible, till the time they become self-sufficient!”

The team of JOY is reaching out to various villages in the hills of Uttarakhand. The Gram Pradhans of these villages is in constant touch with JOY members, wherein the former will inform if any child/children get orphaned.

JOY has been actively working in supporting the masses from the initial stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NGO has been procuring and distributing 24×7 Oxygen Cylinders free of cost as medical supplies with no refilling and security charges. The team also distributed COVID medical kits, sanitization kits (included sanitary pads, sanitizers, masks, soaps) along with other medical equipment to those in need. JOY made every effort to provide help to distant areas in the state and supplied ration kits, including atta, rice, sugar, spices, dal, and oil.

With my indomitable spirit and the efforts of my team, I wish to strive in the future with the same vision.

Mental wellness has gained much attention and interest in the last few months. The obstacles faced during COVID have brought many issues to light that would have otherwise laid dormant. Alma was diagnosed with acute Cerebellar Ataxia at the tender age of 10; During these years, her parents drove her to every part of the nation in quest of answers and someone who might give their daughter a better prognosis. When a more acceptable prognosis did not come, She came to realize that sitting and cursing the situation would not change the situation so chose to live and understood she had to light the torch of her life herself. The negativity that came with the diagnosis and degeneration could’ve consumed Alma, but instead she fought through the trial and tribunes and emerged with the fortitude to become the disability awareness and empowerment speaker she is today.

Having hit rock bottom several times, Alma has been able to channel the stale energy into a productive output and now is able to influence the lives of many people with her positivity. 

She emphasizes that even if you feel that your whole life is crumbling around you, you can always pick up the pieces and rebuild it. Over the years, she has tried to impart the same wisdom to youth all across the world.

Through the challenges in life Alma has  worked to keep up her mental health. According to her, mental wellness is vital in living life.  With her approach towards life, Alma ensures that all her listeners and followers understand that life is so much more than meeting deadlines, getting the promotion, or solving issues. The Taliban is stepping up its attack on provincial cities in response to the increasing airstrikes by the US as fighting has escalated in Herat, Lashkar Gah, and Kandahar, according to a report on Friday. Reuters spoke to three Taliban commanders, one of whom said that they will soon capture other cities.

Taliban violence meanwhile continues unabated in Afghanistan as several videos and images on social media showed those injured, including children. Experts have stated that the loss of Kandahar and Herat, Afghanistan’s second-and third-largest cities by population, would be a major blow to the government. According to them, it could potentially trigger major realignments in favor of the Taliban.

“Mullah Yaqoob argued that when the US didn’t fulfill their commitment, why should Taliban be made to follow the accord?” one of the commanders, based in Kandahar, told Reuters on the condition of anonymity. The commander was referring to the Taliban’s military chief. “Mullah Yaqoob has decided to capture Kandahar and Herat and now Helmand and then it could be Kunduz, Khost or any other province,” the commander said.

The Taliban’s offensive activities have gone up since April when US President Joe Biden announced troops would withdraw by September. Herat, Kandahar and Lashkar Gar have seen sustained attacks by the Taliban, and scores of civilians have been killed in these areas.

“The people of Balkhab are always ready, they will act against all aggressors including the Taliban,” a resident of Sar-e-Pul province was quoted. “It indicates that the people support ANDSDF and they are tired of the war, this is totally a people’s movement,” Fawad Raiskhel said in Kabul.
