Lions of District 3232 B1 & B2 procure portable oxygen during pandemic

The India Saga Saga |

Utilizing the resources they are blessed with to alleviate mankind during these horrendous times, the Lions of Gujarat MD 3232 did everything in their power to provide aid.

The year 2021 has been going tougher on people than anyone expected. The country is fighting for a basic need like oxygen and the scarcity cannot be highlighted anymore. Unavailability of medical infrastructure and medicines have just been added to the long list of ailments. During such times, when people began losing hope, Lions of Gujarat came up with the concept of portable oxygen concentrator machines. In the wake of the rising COVID crisis, it serves as a boon to take care of the infected at home.  The tagline of the project Lions OxyBank is “Life At Your Doorstep.”

The project Lions OxyBank was launched on April 12, 2021, in Ahmedabad and this inspired many NGOs and community associations to follow this suite.

The project was augmented by Past International Director Pravin Chhajed, under which patients will receive 5 and 10-liter capacity portable oxygen machines to treat the deficiency at home itself. The average cost of the oxygen machines to the Lions was 50,000 INR. The project has been managed by Lions Karnavati Shantaben Vishnubhai Eye Hospital under the leadership of District Governors Narendra Patel, Bharat Chhajer and Hospital Chairman Subhash Dasani.  The oxygen bank has already received donations for 700 such machines and they are envisioning to arrange for at least a thousand shortly.

The outcome of this OxyBank has been very satisfactory.  Nearly 65% of the patients recovered at home itself and the remaining 35% got the buffer time till the beds were available in the hospitals.  This helped the highly burdened health infrastructure of the state and also the agony and cost of the patients and their relatives.

With COVID cases increasing in Southern India, Director Pravin Chhajed says, “The Lions Club is playing just a small part to assist the lakhs who have been affected in this turmoil. If our venture can even safeguard a few, we’d feel to have it done successfully. With not enough beds and oxygen facilities available, everyone at the Lions Club decided to work full power and be of use to the ones in need and nothing is going to stop us from doing the good for humanity.”

The team of Kunal, Mahesh and Shekhar are very efficiently managing the bank.  They are guided by the Project Chairman Sanjeev Chhajer.

The world contributed as well

The Lions of China under their project “Giving a Hand from China Lions” gifted 10 ventilators, 40 BiPAP and 20 Oxygen machines.  It will help the Lions of Gujarat to a large extent in fulfilling the requirements. Also, 300 machines have been donated by the community of Canada to the lions of India.

Lions OxyBank received a request from International Director R. Sampath to send 100 portable oxygen concentrator machines. Past International Director R. Sunil Kumar and Council Chairman Mohan from Hyderabad also requested to send 125 portable oxygen concentrator machines. In response to this request, 225 machines were airlifted from Ahmedabad, Gujarat and sent to Southern India, and now, about 20 satellite centers of Lions OxyBank are being started in major cities and rural areas.

In such a dire situation, PID Pravin Chhajed, the brainchild behind this project, immediately managed to fulfil their request within 48 hours.

It is the effort of people like them who have made it possible for the world to reel out of the current crisis of the pandemic. Lions of Gujarat have made it clear that being kind doesn’t cost much, one just needs to have the inherent feeling.

Today, Lions OxyBank is successfully functioning in more than 100 satellite centres across India.  This truly exemplifies the Act of Kindness in Diversity.

Dashmi, woman biker who travel to save the lives of people amid this pandemic

The India Saga Saga |

“Let us help each other and let us start spreading humanity more and less hatred”-Dashmi

What if every woman on the planet had the courage to defy social norms and push themselves to be a better person? It will be a day when we can truly state that our country is progressing. Dashmi, a biker, defied social expectations and pushed herself every day. She is a mother, a science teacher who has been a true inspiration from many women out there.

Her Journey

Dashmi started her Bike riding Journey in the year 2017 in a normal scooty and it was her first solo ride from “Chandralayout” to “Doddaladamara” which is near Tavarekere.

She always wanted to do more which is inspiring and motivating in her life and thought of riding a “gear bike” which seemed more challenging to her but she did it.  She learned driving and in the same year, bought her first bike which is “Avengers” and went for her first solo ride on his gear bike to “Lepakshi Temple” which is in Andhrapradesh, this way she started connecting with many “Bikers Team” and started participating in all the “Biker’s Event”.

During the initial days of her journey, she was criticized for riding a geared bike but she took all the critics from society in a positive way and built herself, even more, stronger than she was and she believes because of people she has reached where she is today. They challenged her to do more in the best way and today she is the woman who travelled from “Karnataka to Kanyakumari “

Leh Ladakh, Rameshwaram and all over Karnataka in the Bike. She felt more alive when she travelled alone because it gave her the feeling of discovering a new place, meeting new people, learning about their culture, eating their food, and living their way of life. Talking about the same she said, “The way they connect with you, the way they treat you like family, makes you feel safe, and you will have no choice but to love those you meet on your journey!”

A frontline worker

In 2019 she switched from “Avengers” to “Royal Enfield-650cc” and her exploring journey continued and again she started getting this thought that “I have to do something more to the Society” she started her journey by registering as a civic leader in BBMP and started working in Covid emergency helpline delivering “Emergency Medicine” to the people on her bike this was during the Covid 1st wave. She never cared about the distance and always wanted to help people and continued her work doing so.

Because of her noble work, she got more blessings from her elders. Recalling one of those memories she said, “ I still remember one person who was aged around 85, he was so happy when I went to give him his medicines, he told me that “I felt like my daughter came home” to see how I’m and this bought me in tears.”

As the days passed cities were getting affected again due to the 2nd wave of covid, the situation got worst than ever. As a Corona Warrior, she started her work by conducting a “Vaccination Drive” for the elders but they were so scared of getting vaccinated. She convinced them to take their vaccination dose was a big thing for her team.

After a few days, she started feeling that the work which she is doing is not satisfactory and she is capable of doing a lot more for society. Thinking this she reached the BBMP office and asked the officer to give her some challenging task so that she can help people in a better way. She was assigned to work as an informer of the availability of beds in Victoria Hospital and her job was to update the availability of ICU and normal beds, and the number of patients who are being admitted and who are being discharged from the hospital to the BBMP helpline desk.

She was so happy that she was finally doing something better to help people and she reached my place of work and the very first day she got to know that she was assigned to work in the “Red Zone” despite it she did not step back, took it as a challenge and started working there even though she was seeing more dead bodies been discharged than a normal human being discharged. But her attitude didn’t let her give up. She was literally roke inside by seeing around 50 dead bodies in a week, but she completed her assigned task for a week in the victoria hospital and next started delivering long-distance medicine kit to the home isolation people on her bike and also arranged ration kit for 10 people. Along with she provided nutritious home-cooked food for 500 needy people with the support of Lion’s club and by a member of the Sangeetha family.

With all the experience she has till today she said,  “There is no such thing called tomorrow! we only have today and today is the day where we can be happy and help each other.”

Every women should be like Dashmi daring, challenging and courageous enough to work on her aspirations.

Mumbai real-estate market defying all odds

The India Saga Saga |

The city witnessed 26% increase in home sales in the last quarterdemonstrating solid demand- coupled with corresponding decline in inventory, the possibility of price increase in the coming months and quarters is significant

The spread of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns last one year cast uncertainties across sectors including real estate. However, when the unlock phase began, real estate proved to be one of the sectors that was quick to bounce back. With home being the centre of all activities, the pandemic heightened the consumer desire for bigger and better homes. Moreover the uncertainty quotient for the sector reduced with consolidation in the market. Customers started preferring reputed developers since the element of trust and assurance of quality and delivery was a given. Financial benefits such as lowest interest rates in a long time and the stamp duty cuts in Mumbai presented a golden opportunity to customers wanting to buy a home and this resulted in record sales.

Mumbai market showed robust growth

Mumbai the financial capital of our country has always been at the forefront in terms of both demand and supply of real estate. With a booming urban population, Mumbai will continue to see a sustained demand for good quality housing projects from not just first time home buyers but also those looking to upgrade their lifestyle. As a market it has always been one of the top markets for investors owing to the decent rental yields.

Given the favourable factors, during the Oct to Dec 2020 and Jan to Mar 2021, developers across top tier cities in India reported robust sales. As per a report released by PropEquity, sales or absorption of housing units rose by 21% across top 7 cities in India in Jan to Mar of 2021 to 1,05,183 units versus 87,236 units in Jan to Mar 2020.  Mumbai region witnessing an increase of 26% in home sales in the same period at 41,323 units.

While the second COVID 19 wave and the resultant lockdown in the state may have put a halt in this upward momentum, experts are of the opinion that it’s a temporary lull and there is a latent demand which will convert to sales as soon as people are able to visit sites. The sales momentum will also be supported by the interest from the NRI market. As per a report by 360 Realtors, NRIs invested $13.1 billion in the Indian real estate market in FY 21 and this is further expected to grow at 12%. The reduced home loan rate as well as the weakening of rupee has presented a good opportunity those residing overseas to invest in real estate in India.

Decline in inventory plus rising cost of raw materials could result in price rise

Given the fact that the market has witnessed consolidation post the NBFC crisis of 2018, increasingly we will have only the top developers launching new projects in the market. This will further ward-off the chances of surplus inventory crowding the market and may drive up prices. The report by PropEquity pegged a 40% decrease in new supply or launches of housing units in Mumbai in January-March 2021to 59,737 units compared to 1,00,343 units year ago. Another factor that may likely cause the prices to go north is the increase in the prices of raw materials like cement and steel.

What are consumers looking for?

With the pandemic enforced work-from-home and online education demands, consumers are looking for bigger homes in projects that also offer open spaces and amenities to unwind. They are willing to pay premium for projects by grade A developer as they can be assured of timely possession and quality of construction. Developers on the other hand are also providing additional benefits to consumers to complement the lower rate of interest charged by banks. Recently, a leading developer extended the Maharashtra government’s lower stamp duty benefit that was applicable till 31st March 2021 for a limited period and announced that they will bear the differential amount. This will enable homebuyers who may have missed out on it earlier to purchase their dream home.

The real estate sector has been one of the top contributors to the economy and the impetus provided by the government to help boost sales bear testimony to this fact. Post the market consolidation following the NBFC crisis, the sector is now shaped by reputed developers who have deep understanding of growing in a planned and disciplined manner and this will ensure that the coming decade is arobust one for the sector.
