2011 Cricket World Cup

The 2011 Cricket World Cup was the 10th edition of the biggest tournament of International Cricket that was held between 19th February 2011 and 2 April 2011 in India and Sri Lanka. A total of 49 matches were played among 14 teams, which were divided into two groups of seven each. The hosts India and Sri Lanka qualified along with Pakistan and New Zealand. In a final played between the Hosts, India emerged to be victorious after 28 years. 

Format 

There were 14 teams at the start of the World Cup, divided into two groups of seven. The top four teams of each group proceeded to the Quarter-Finals. The victorious teams went on to play the semis, It was the knock-out stage, and the winners went on to play the Final of the Cup.

Group2: India, South Africa, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Ireland

Semifinals

The First semifinal was played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Colombo. This match was remarkable as this was Muralidharan’s last match on Sri Lankan soil. Batting first, New Zealand got bowled out for 217 runs, as Ajanta Mendis and Lasith Malinga destroyed the NZ batting, claiming three wickets each. The Second semi-final was played between the arch-rivals, India and Pakistan. India won the toss and chose to bat first, the backbone of Indian cricket, Tendulkar was dropped four times in the match before he was dismissed at a score of 85. Raina’s cameo innings of 36 led India to a score of 260. Pakistan’s opening gave the men-in-green a solid start. The class captaincy by MS Dhoni, led to India defeating their arch-rivals by 29 runs. India was all set to play the final with Sri Lanka.

Finals

This was the second consecutive final appearance for the island nation. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat on the Wankhede wicket. Indian bowlers kept the scoring rate low, for the first 10 overs. Due to, Mahela Jayawardene’s ton, Sri Lanka scored 274 runs. India was off to a nervous start as explosive Virender Sehwag departed for a duck. Soon, the hopes of the Indians were shattered as Tendulkar departed on the score of 31-2. 

Gambhir and Kohli were eager to rebuild the innings. Kohli was dismissed for 35 when the Captain came out to bat. Keeping an eye on a bigger partnership, Dhoni and Gambhir kept the scoreboard ticking. Dhoni on one end attacked Muralidharan, and Gambhir played his shots on the other. The left-hander was dismissed three runs short of his century. As Yuvraj Singh replaced Gambhir, India was in a comfortable position. Dhoni brought India close to victory, with only four runs required off 11 balls, MSD hit the ball into the crowd. India lifted the World Cup after 28 years. Tendulkar, who was playing his last World Cup received a dream farewell. Yuvraj Singh’s all-round performance with 362 runs and 15 wickets, earned him the “Man of the Tournament” title.

Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government on Monday released the results of its controversial caste-based survey just months before the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The census revealed that Other Backward Classes (OBCs) constitute 63 per cent of the state’s population. The census, also known as Bihar Jati Adharit Ganana, shows that Scheduled Castes make up more than 19 percent of the 13 million population, while Scheduled Tribes make up 1.68 per cent. The upper castes or Savarnas form 15.52 percent of the state’s population.

A detailed breakdown of the survey shows that Backward Classes constitute 27 per cent of the population, while Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) constitute 36 per cent. Together they form the numerically powerful Other Backward Classes (OBCs) who have dominated Bihar politics since the Mandal wave. Bhumihars constitute 2.86 percent of the population, while Brahmins constitute 3.66 per cent. Kurmi, which includes Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, accounts for 2.87 percent of the population. Musahars make up 3 per cent and Yadavs — the community of Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav — 14 percent of the population.

This is happening for the first time in any Indian state, as its demand was peaking across the sections. 

Just after the release of the data Nitish Kumar’s INDIA alliance partner the grand old party of India Congress posted on ‘X,’ Caste surveys in Bihar will help the administration address the socio-economic inequality in the state. A similar census at the national level will help the government to properly include OBCs, Dalits, Tribals and women. Shri Rahul Gandhi always raised his voice and demanded to list the boxes. Under the leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh Ji, the UPA government conducted a caste-based census. But the Modi government is not releasing the bill. The Congress government in Karnataka also conducted a caste-based census and we have always supported it. If the Modi government fails to complete the caste enumeration, we will start the exercise as soon as the Congress government is formed in 2024. We make sure that every part of the society gets its share.”

World Cup of 2007

The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup was the 9th edition of the Cricket World Cup, a one-day international (ODI) cricket tournament held in the West Indies from 13 March to 28 April 2007. A total of 51 matches were played, three fewer than the 2003 World Cup. The 16 competing teams were initially divided into four groups, where the two best results of each group advanced to the “Super 8” format. Defending champions Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa qualified for the semi-finals, with Kangaroos defeating Sri Lanka in the final to win their third consecutive World Cup and fourth overall. 

Format

The tournament began with a league stage consisting of four groups of 16 teams. Each team played once against the other teams in their subgroup. Australia, India, England and the West Indies were placed in separate groups for logistical reasons as they were expected to have the largest number of supporters and the West Indies had limited transport and accommodation facilities. The top two teams of each group advanced to the “Super 8” stage, which was also played in a league system. The top four teams in the league made it to the semi-finals. It was the knockout stage where the first team played the 4th team and the second team played the third team in the tournament.

Group B; Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, and Bermuda

Group C; New Zealand, England, Kenya, Canada

Semi-finals

The first semi-final was played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at Sabina Park, Kingston. The favourites Sri Lanka won the toss and their captain Mahela Jayawardene scored an unbeaten 115 which helped the Lankans to set a mammoth target of 289. In reply, the Kiwis were shattered and all out for 208 in 42 overs, only Peter Fulton scored some handy runs at 46. The Lankans won by 81 runs and booked a seat in the finals, The Sri Lankan captain was honoured as player of the game. 

The second semi-final is played between the defending champions Australia and the chokers South Africa at Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet. Africa won the toss and elected to bat first, but the furious bowling of Shaun Tait with the combination of experienced Glenn McGrath dismantled Africa’s inning to 149 runs in 44 overs. Only Justin Kemp 49* was able to score some runs for Africa. In reply, Australia completed the target in just 32 overs and moved ahead to play their 6th final. Glenn McGrath received the Man of the Match award for his exceptional bowling. 

Finals

This was the first rain-affected final in the history of the ODI World Cup and was played on a reserve day, due to rain the game was reduced to 38 overs per side. Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, Adam Gilchrist off to a blistering start and played an historical innings of 149, the highest individual score in a World Cup final. Which helped Australia to set 281 in just 38 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka played a decent game and was still alive in the game until their 2 most senior batters Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumara Sangakkara were playing.  However, once the set pair departed the chances of Sri Lanka to repeat the glory of 1996 were also finished. 

Hence, Australia won the World Cup by 37 runs and took revenge for the 1996 finals, where the Lankans beat the Kangaroos in the final. Australia scored a hat-trick of winning the World Cup and added the 4th ‘global-ball’ trophy to their cabinet. Australia won the tournament undefeated and extended their World Cup unbeaten streak to 29. Adam Gilchrist was awarded Man of the Match and Australian bowler Glenn McGrath was named “Player of the series” and retired from all forms of international cricket.

A 12-year-old girl was spotted running on a deserted road early on Monday in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. After discovering the rape victim on Monday evening with her clothes torn and bleeding profusely, some ashram residents in Ujjain city saved the victim. This brought attention to the horrible event, according to the police. The girl’s identity and the date of the occurrence have not yet been determined by police investigation. 

On Monday morning, the girl was noticed by Rahul Sharma, a member of an ashram on Badnagar Road in the region close to Ujjain. In an interview, Rahul admitted, “I met the girl on Monday at around 9.30 am when I was leaving the ashram for some work. She was bleeding close to the gates, half-naked. She was completely speechless. Her eyes swelled up. She received my garments, and I then dialled 100.” “Unfortunately, I was unable to contact the police. I then spoke with the Mahakal police station and let them know what was happening. The police officers were at the scene in about 20 minutes,” he added.

The 12-year-old girl’s father stated in an interview that she left the house to take an exam at her school. She was discovered in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, after being raped. He continued by saying he learned about her through his uncle, who had shown him a video of her moving through the streets of Ujjain. The girl’s father, a local of Satna district, claimed she typically walked to school on September 24, the day she vanished.

The victim’s father stated her school, where she attends Class 8, is around a kilometre away from their home. He urged his father to look for her in the neighbourhood when she did not return. On September 25, the girl’s family reported her missing after being unable to locate her. Only when her uncle showed the girl’s father a photo from Ujjain did he learn that she had been seen there.The girl was bleeding and had a rag barely covering her, according to the police, when she was seen roaming the streets of Ujjain after boarding an auto at Jeevan Kheri. The minor is said to have been raped and discarded close to Dandi Ashram.
