The violent state of Manipur on Sunday replaced Rajesh Kumar, who had been serving a six-month extension since last December, with Vineet Joshi, an IAS officer from the 1992-batch state cadre.

A day after the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet granted the Manipur government’s proposal to repatriate Joshi to his parent cadre, Joshi, who was working as Director General of the National Testing Agency (NTA) under the Ministry of Education, arrived in Imphal on a special flight on Sunday. 

Joshi will hold the additional positions of Principal Resident Commissioner of Manipur Bhawan in New Delhi and Chief Vigilance Commissioner of Manipur, according to the chief secretary’s appointment order.

In March 2017, Joshi worked in Manipur for Chief Minister N Biren Singh as his principal secretary. After being named DG of the NTA, which oversees the administration of admission exams including the CUET, JEE Main, and NEET, he was sent to Delhi a year later.

Joshi was regarded as an officer with many duties at Shastri Bhavan because he was a second secretary in the Education Ministry. He was in charge of the central universities in addition to the NTA, actively involved in shaping the proposed Higher Education Commission of India, and for a brief period, the interim chairperson of the CBSE. 

The NTA, under the direction of Joshi, hosted the initial iterations of the CUET undergraduate and postgraduate. Joshi is well-known for his composed demeanor and is a native speaker of the Manipuri language. He frequently observed conversing with visitors from Manipur in their language at his workplace, having learned it during his prior stays in the state.

According to a then-released official statement, in April 2018 at a farewell ceremony for Joshi, who was leaving for Delhi to assume the position of DG, NTA, the Manipur Chief Minister praised him as a “dedicated, hardworking and bright officer whose absence would leave a void in the state’s administrative set-up”.

According to the report, the chief minister also expressed the hope that Joshi will stay in touch with the state administration and occasionally give his thoughts and views in integral matters.

Joshi, who graduated from IIT-Kanpur with a B.Tech in mechanical engineering and then earned a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, started his career as a deputy secretary in the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in Manipur.

On May 8th, 2023, Monday, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister of India said that the situation in Manipur is under control as a curfew was imposed in the violence-hit northern eastern state. He also requested the people of the state to maintain peace. During the interaction with India Today/Aaj Tak, Amit Shah gave assurance that the government of Manipur will consult all the stakeholders before taking any decision regarding the matter of Scheduled Tribe status from the community of Meitie.  

After days of violence and arson which left 54 dead, hundreds of people hospitalised, and thousands of people displaced. On May 3rd, the violence broke out in the state between Naga and Kuki tribes and the Meitie community over the needs of ST status. More than 23,000 displaced people are currently sheltering in the camps. The violence took place after the protest march organised by the Kuki tribal groups sparked clashes with the non-tribal Meitei community.

The government allowed the people to step out of their houses between 7-10 am on May 7th in Churachandpur, where the violence took place at its peak. The army of India said that no major violence was reported overnight. Almost 23,500 people are presently being provided shelter by the Indian Army. The Indian army said in a statement that 120-125 Army and Assam Rifles have been working tirelessly for the past 96 hours to quell the violence.

Mobs of people have burned buildings and cars, vandalised hotels and shops, and destroyed churches across the various districts such as Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, and Kangpokpi. The police and army personnel were deployed to take charge in the clashes. Amit Shah has cancelled all his rallies in poll-bound states in Karnataka, where the upcoming elections will be held, and is focusing on the Manipur violence. 

On May 8th, 2023, Monday, JP Nadda, the national president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that ‘The Kerala Story’ exposes a ‘new type of terrorism’ that does not use ammunition. He further added that the controversial film also exposes ‘poisonous terrorism.’ On Sunday, he attended the special screening of the film in Garuda Mall, where he was also campaigning for the upcoming Assembly polls. JP Nadda became the latest leader from his party to endorse the Adah Sharma-starrer film. 

The chief of BJP said after attending the screening “I just got to watch The Kerala Story, we know about a new type of terrorism. We have heard bullets, bombs, and automatic weapons being used for terrorism. The movie exposes a threatening type of terrorism that is without ammunition. The film successfully exposes such ‘poisonous terrorism’ as well as the conspiracy behind it.” He further added that this kind of terrorism isn’t related to any religion or state. 

Earlier, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi also said that the film ‘The Kerala Story’ based on terrorism, brings out the ugly truth of terrorism and exposes the strategies used in the formation of terrorism. The recent order from Kerala high court which mentions that the court has made serious observations on the film, as well it refused the stay of the release too. On the other hand, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan made an announcement that ‘The Kerala Story’ has been made tax-free in the state.

Well, the neutral-coloured carpet at the Met Gala which had swirls of red and blue was woven by artisans from Kerala and was designed by Tadao Ando, a Japanese architect. Neyatt by Extraweave, a Kerala-based brand took the task of turning Ando’s dream into reality. The local artists took around 60 days to make the carpets and used approx 58 rolls of carpet. The Met Carpet was made using sisal fibres and was then painted by designers in the United States.

On May 2nd, 2023, Tuesday, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India alleged that Congress’ history is about “appeasing terror and terrorism,” and the party had questioned the defence forces of the country, at the time when the air strikes and surgical strikes were carried out. The Prime Minister said that unlike Congress which had left Karnataka ‘at the mercy of terrorists’ the ruling BJP has ‘broken the back’ of terror and appeasement. 

The Prime Minister was addressing an election campaign rally in Chitradurga ahead of the upcoming elections on May 10th. Also accusing the Congress for encouraging terrorism and terror, Narendra Modi said they can never increase investments in Karnataka as well as can not create new opportunities for the youth in the state. “Karnataka’s people should never forget the Congress’ continuous history of terrorism as well as their thought process behind that. Their history is about appeasing terror and terrorists. When the Batla House incident happened in Delhi, there were tears in the eyes of Congress’ topmost leader, hearing about the news of the death of the terrorists,” PM Modi mentioned.  

He further added that when the air strikes and surgical strikes took place in India, it was Congress who raised the questions on the capability of the defence forces of the country. In the 2008 Batla House encounter in which two terrorists were gunned down by the police in their rental address in Jamia Nagar, the Prime Minister bashed Sonia Gandhi, the Congress chief and said that she had ‘tears in her eyes’ after hearing the tragic death of the terrorists.

Tillu Tajpuriya, a dreaded gangster who was attacked by the rival gang members inside the Tihar jail and later killed in Delhi. Tillu Tajpuriya, the alleged mastermind in the Rohini court shootout case in September 2021, was thrashed with iron rods by allegedly gangster Yogesh Tunda as well as his aides which leads him to death. Also, one other prisoner named Rohit was also injured in the attack.

The Police said that Tillu Tajpuriya was immediately rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Delhi, where he was declared dead directly. The DCP West district, Akshat Kaushal said “Today’s morning at around 7 am, news was received from the Delhi’s Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital regarding the two prisoners who were brought to the Hospital from Tihar jail. One of them, Tillu Tajpuriya was brought to an unconscious state, where he was later declared dead as he wasn’t responding. Rohit, the other prisoner is undergoing treatment and now is out of danger.”

Tillu Tajpuriya who was lodged in cell no.9 was attacked with an iron rod by the prisoner named Yogesh Tunda along with his gang members who was lodged in cell no.8, the police further mentioned. “Tillu Tajpuriya was charged by Yogesh alias Tunda and Deepak alias Teetar by breaking the iron grill of the ward which divided both the gangs in the same ward” , said the officials. The investigation is still going on in this incident. 

In September 2021, gangster Sunil Maan alias Tillu Tajpuriya was allegedly involved in the killing of Jitender Maan alias Gogi in a shootout inside a courtroom at Rohini Courts Complex. The two members from the rival Tillu gang are suspected as the gunmen dressed as lawyers. The shooting was the result of a rivalry of years between the Gogi’s gang and Tillu’s gang.
