PayNearby integrates government Super App, UMANG, to offer citizens assisted e-Gov services

The India Saga Saga |

To offer ease and further the Government’s vision to make e-governance ‘mobile first’ in India, PayNearby, India’s leading branchless banking and digital network, has integrated the all-in-one app UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) into its platform. PayNearby looks to assist citizens with all their central and state government services-related needs across 20,000+ PIN codes with its tech-led DaaS network of 50+ retail partners while aiding the reach of UMANG services to a larger user base of 20+ crore customers.

Developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and National e-Governance Division (NeGD) to drive Mobile Governance in India, UMANG provides a single platform for all Indian citizens to access 100+ e-Gov services ranging from central to local government bodies. Available in numerous regional languages, this super app is designed to get citizens rid of the need to download countless apps while enhancing transparency and fairness in all transactions. The app allows the users to discover, download, access, and use all government services easily in one place, all at the tip of their fingers.

However, most of the population, especially across semi-urban and rural India, are not tech-savvy enough to access these services themselves, hindering the GoI’s vision of mobile governance. Through its assisted retail network of 50+ lakh retail outlets, PayNearby aims to handhold the masses and acquaint them with various features of UMANG and help them access those services while adding ease to their lives. Now, people do not need to visit several offices to get their administrative jobs done. They can simply walk into their nearest kirana store, and the retailer through the PayNearby app can redirect to the Umang App and help them with their government service needs. This means citizens at the last mile, through their trusted retailer, can download their vaccination certificate, check their pension amount, view their provident fund passbook or track EPFO claim status, at a store nearby.

Speaking on the development, Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder, MD & CEO, PayNearby said, “At PayNearby, our goal has always been to build a progressive society. China sells a warship to Pakistan for deployment in the Indian Ocean

The India Saga Saga |

China delivered to Pakistan’s Navy on Monday what its state media characterized as the “most advanced” Chinese warship ever sold, which will be stationed in the Indian Ocean by Pakistan. The transfer of the Type 054A frigate is the latest example of growing military cooperation between China and Pakistan, which many Chinese and Pakistani analysts believe is aimed at strengthening Pakistani capabilities in order to counterbalance India in the region.

On Tuesday, Pakistan’s envoy to China, Moin Ul Haque, told the Communist Party-run Global Times that the frigate was about to be commissioned “in the context of the overall security paradigm of the region” would “strengthen Pakistan Navy’s capabilities to respond to maritime challenges to ensure seaward defence, maintain peace, stability, and balance of power in the Indian Ocean region”.

The warship was presented to the Pakistan Navy in a commissioning ceremony in Shanghai, according to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), which designed and built the frigate. It has been named PNS Tughril by the Pakistani Navy, and it is “the first hull of four Type 054 frigates being constructed for the Pakistan Navy”, the Pakistan Navy told the newspaper. “Being equipped with state-of-the-art combat management and an electronic warfare system along with modern self-defence capabilities, the Type 054A/P frigate can simultaneously execute a number of naval warfare missions in a highly intense multi-threat environment,” it added.

The frigate was designed and built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC) and delivered to the Pakistan Navy at a commissioning ceremony in Shanghai, according to the newspaper, which cited a CSSC statement made on Monday. In a previous interview with the Global Times, Zhang June, a senior research fellow at the PLA Naval Research Academy, said that the new ship has a better air defence capability than previous Chinese frigates because it is equipped with an improved radar system and a larger number of missiles with a longer range. According to Zhang, the Type 054A, on which the Type 054A/P is based, is China’s most advanced frigate, with world-class stealth capabilities.

Obama criticizes Russia & China for ‘lack of urgency’ on climate change

The India Saga Saga |

At the United Nations climate talks on Monday, Barack Obama expressed confidence that the Biden administration’s $555 billion climate package will eventually pass Congress, and he chastised U.S. rivals China and Russia for a “dangerous lack of urgency” in reducing their own climate-wrecking emissions. As countries expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of trust and progress in the climate discussions, Mr. Obama, one of the leaders who helped pave the road for the historic 2015 Paris climate agreement, offered a ray of hope while admitting that “pictures of dystopia” were seeping into his sleep.

“There are times where the future seems somewhat bleak. There are times where I am doubtful that humanity can get its act together before it’s too late,” Mr. Obama said at the two-week-long negotiations. “(But) we can’t afford hopelessness.” His remarks came as conference organizers admitted on Monday that after a week of meetings, there are still a lot of issues to work out. The trust gap between rich and poor countries has resurfaced, with developing countries using the word “disappointing” to describe the discussions’ progress thus far.

The former American president is attending his first United Nations climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, since helping to secure the 2015 Paris climate agreement, in which nations agreed to reduce fossil fuel and agricultural emissions quickly enough to keep global warming below the catastrophic level of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit). Worry has taken the place of celebration. Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Accord. And, when President Joe Biden re-entered the climate agreement, Trump’s decision set back American efforts. Other major polluters, such as China, India, and Russia, are moving far more slowly than scientists predict in combating climate change.

“1.5 C is on life support now, it’s in ICU,” said Alden Meyer of E3G, an environmental think tank. Obama’s visit was intended to remind governments of the excitement surrounding the Paris Agreement and to encourage them to announce more urgent, concrete efforts to implement the 2015 agreement. To save the planet, he argued, optimism and togetherness are essential.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat if your Florida house is flooded by rising seas, or your crops fail in the Dakotas, or your California house is burning. Nature, physics, science – they don’t care about party affiliation,” Mr. Obama said. “We need everybody – even if we disagree on other things.”

On Monday, Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate wrote on Twitter that she was 13 years old when President Barack Obama was part of a group of wealthy nations that promised impoverished countries $100 billion a year to help them combat global warming, but that the pledge was broken. “I’m not targeting the former president,” Nakate told The Associated Press, “but that is me telling the truth.”

Mr. Obama was sure that some form of Biden’s ambitious climate bill would pass and be “historic,” despite resistance from inside Biden’s own Democratic party, which has stalled the president’s climate-fighting legislation.

“It will set the United States on course to meet its new climate targets,” he said. While the rapport between US and Chinese negotiators opened the path for the Paris Agreement, Mr. Obama chastised Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday for not attending the climate talks in Glasgow with other world leaders.
