“It’s okay to reach out when you need help” says Amrita Sharma, author of “Taken For a Metro Ride”

The India Saga |

Amrita Sharma, author of the book “Taken For a Metro Ride”, talks about several issues in her book, including mindfulness, living in the moment and the value of sharing. But what her book highlights is mental health – an issue which many in India still approach with an Ostrich mindset, by burying our head in the sand and pretending it doesn’t exist.

Excerpts from the interview:

What is the book about?

My book “Taken For a Metro Ride” is about people, about life, about metro rides and also about issues we push under the carpet. In my book, there are two protagonists – one is the girl through whose experiences we learn about life and the other is the metro, which becomes the stage where all different kinds of stories unravel.

Through this book – “Taken For a Metro Ride” – I wanted to integrate personal and impersonal, profound and profane, obvious and the ambiguous, and take the readers on an extraordinary journey, with the metro playing the supporting role in my protagonist’s voyage of self-discovery.

What motivated you to write the book?

All of us travel to work every day and most of us find it difficult to pass the time, especially if the journey happens to be a long one. Most of us end up depending on books, mobile or other gadgets to fill that time. I would do the same, till the time I realised that my eyes got practically no screen break. That’s when I started observing people, listening to their conversations and sometimes just trying to understand the diverse personality types through their varied behaviour patterns. I realised to my surprise that everyone travelling in the metro was a story – and that got me really interested. The book actually encapsulates all those experiences and observations.

Your book highlights the issue of mental health. Please tell us why

Believe it or not, I heard many people talking amongst themselves in the metro how somebody in their family or in their wider circle was ‘depressed” and seeing counsellors and psychologists. They would talk about it in hushed tones and refer to it as if it was some kind of a curse or a contagious disease. That got me thinking. Today, in the stressful life we all live in, depression and mental health are a reality and we cannot hide from it. You never know, but someone in our extended family, our neighbourhood, our wider circle could probably be struggling with it right now, and is afraid to talk about it or seek help because of the stigma still attached to it in India. When it comes to mental health, we seem to behave like the ostrich, thinking that the problem will disappear if we bury our head in the sand and not see it. That is why I decided to weave the issue into my story – to create more awareness about it. Today, there is an urgent need to accept that the issue of mental health exists and needs to be addressed, and that we must empathise with those struggling with it.

What drew you to the issue of mental health?

I have been a student of English Literature from Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) in Delhi and many of the classics introduced me to the workings of human minds and its underlying psychology. I also read several books that touched upon the issue of mental health, including Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger  and of course Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, to name a few. Some recent ones that I read on the subject include The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho. I really feel people should read more on the issue so that they can understand what people with mental health go through.

What would you like to tell our readers?

I would like to tell them three simple things (a) learn to be present in the moment (b) be mindful and aware of people around you  (c) nothing is more precious than your life and your health – both physical and mental.  That’s why it’s absolutely okay to reach out when you think you need help.

Charanjit Singh Channi designated as new CM of Punjab

The India Saga Saga |

In a massive tale of twists and turns and a weekend full of soaring political temperatures in Punjab, finally, the state gets its new Chief Minister in Charanjit Singh Channi. The 49-year-old MLA will be taking the oath today.

Harish Rawat, former Uttarakhand CM, and Congress in-charge of poll-bound Punjab, on Sunday evening, announced that Charanjit Singh Channi will be the new Chief Minister of Punjab after former CM Captain Amarinder Singh, on Saturday tendered his resignation to the new Governor of Punjab, Banwarilal Purohit.

Channi, the new CM designate, who belongs to Ramdasia Sikh Community, will be the first Dalit Sikh leader to become the Chief Minister of the Northern State of Punjab. A 3-time Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Chamkaur Sahib Assembly Constituency in Rupnagar District, Channi was the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Punjab Assembly from 2015 to 2016 during the previous SAD-BJP government. Channi has also been a staunch critic of former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and was one among the four cabinet ministers who protested against Captain. The new CM-designate had time and again criticized Captain for not doing his work sincerely and not paying any heed to the decisions taken by the Congress party. Channi even went to Dehradun and met Harish Rawat last month.

These developments come after Captain Amarinder Singh submitted his resignation letter to the Governor on Saturday. The former CM, after resigning, gave a slew of interviews to all the major TV channels. He attacked PPCC Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu aggressively. Captain even said “I feel humiliated but I won’t budge down, I am a soldier and I will fight back. He targeted Sidhu by alleging he has close ties with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army, and even said Sidhu could be a threat to Punjab and National Security. As per sources, he was likely to resign as he has been miffed with the Congress High Command on how they have promoted Navjot Singh Sidhu and sidelined him. However, Captain has not commented anything on his future prospects in the grand old party except saying “I will discuss everything with my friends, colleagues, and well-wishers and will come to a decision after that.”

Soon after Captain’s resignation, Congress was in a hurdle. Harish Rawat and Ajay Maken, after the CLP meeting on Saturday, said Congress High Command will take the decision on a new CM face. On Sunday afternoon, speculations were that Sukjinder Singh Randhawa will the new Chief Minister but in the early hours of the evening, it was decided that Charanjit Singh Channi, a 49-year-old MLA will be the new CM. This move is seen as a smart attempt to balance the caste equation of the state by making Sidhu, a Jat Sikh, PPCC President as well as catering to the Dalit Community by promoting Channi as the Head of the State.”

Scientists creates all-new white paint that eliminates Air-Conditioner

The India Saga Saga |

Scientists at US university have invented the world’s whitest-ever paint which could help in cooling the heating Earth. With their unique creation, the paint has entered the Guinness World Records as the whitest ever made. A mechanical engineering professor at Purdue University said, “ When they started out, their goal was to create a paint color which would reflect sunlight away from a building. That’s where all the white comes in”.

Through phenomenal reflective properties, the whitest paint from Earth can absorb 98.1 percent sunlight and reflects infrared heat allowing the surface to cool by 4.5C below the ambient temperature minimizing the use of air conditioners. Ruan expressed in a statement, “Applying the paint on an area of about 1,000 square feet could produce cooling worth 10 kilowatts- having more powerful cooling than most powerful air conditioners”.

“Typical commercial white paint gets warmer rather than cooler. Paints on the market that are designed to reject heat reflect only 80-90 percent of sunlight and can’t make surfaces cooler than their surroundings,” Purdue University said in a statement.

“When we started this project about seven years ago, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind,” said Ruan, in a podcast episode of “This Is Purdue.”

“Our paint can help fight against global warming by helping to cool the Earth – that’s the cool point,” said Prof Xiulin Ruan at Purdue University in the US. “Producing the whitest white means the paint can reflect the maximum amount of sunlight back to space.”

Some resources have told Purdue Researchers are on their way to collaborate with a company to introduce the supercooling paint in the market. The qualities that are enhancing the value of new paint are a high concentration of barium sulfate, a chemical compound also used in cosmetics, along with different particle sizes of barium sulfate.

U.S is vacating Haitian migrants from Texas

The India Saga Saga |

The U.S. is flying Haitians who camped in a Texas border town, back to their homeland. The superpower is also blocking others from crossing the border from Mexico in a massive show of force that signals the beginning of what could be one of America’s swiftest, large-scale expulsions of migrants or refugees in decades.

More than 320 migrants arrived in Port-au-Prince on three flights on September 19, and Haiti said six flights were expected on September 21. In all, U.S. authorities moved to expel many of the 12,000 migrants camped around a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, after crossing from Ciudad Acuna, Mexico.

The U.S. plans to begin seven expulsion flights daily from September 22, four to Port-au-Prince, and three to Cap-Haitien, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. Flights will continue to depart from San Antonio but authorities may add El Paso, the official said.

The only obvious parallel for such an expulsion without an opportunity to seek asylum was in 1992 when the Coast Guard intercepted Haitian refugees at sea, said Yael Schacher, senior U.S. advocate at Refugees International whose doctoral studies focused on the history of U.S. asylum law.

Similarly, large numbers of Mexican migrants were sent home during peak years of immigration but over land and not so suddenly.

Central Americans have also crossed the border in comparable numbers without being subject to mass expulsion, although Mexico has agreed to accept them from the U.S. under pandemic-related authority in effect since March 2020. Mexico does not accept expelled Haitians or people of other nationalities outside of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

When the border was closed on September 19, the migrants initially found other ways to cross nearby until they were confronted by federal and state law enforcement. An AP reporter saw Haitian immigrants still crossing the river into the U.S. about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) east of the previous spot, but they were eventually stopped by Border Patrol agents on horseback and Texas law enforcement officials.
