Mental Health Problem! Does it Gradually Growing Towards to be a Pandemic?

The India Saga Saga |

By Dr. Satabdi Roy Choudhury

You Cannot Survive Socially when You are not okay Mentally

Your Mental Well-Being Defines the Performance of Your Whole Being

Cheers to the Self State of Mind is the Best Therapy to Heal Soul of Your Body

From the above maxim makes it evident that in general sense mental health refers to our emotional, psychological and social integrity. It is simply how we think, feel act, react, handle stress and make choices in our day-to-day life. Now, here one need to understand the main existing difference between the mental health and mental well-being. Mental well-being is a broad category which includes people’s emotional responses, domain satisfactions and global judgements of life satisfactions. Though the above focused components often correlate substantially, but for a person suffering from mental illness or disorders may experience these components differently depending upon his or her mood, thinking and behaviors.

Why Mental Health is Important?

Mental Health is important for all of us as it helps us to cope with the various stresses of life. It provides healthy life-styles, which in return provides healthy body. A mentally healthy person can not only an asset to his family but also make meaningful contribution to the community. Moreover, a mentally healthy person can realize his full potential and can provide productive way of thought and work (Source: Medline Plus). In short, the social and economic cost associated with growing burden of mental ill health focused the possibilities for promoting mental health as well as preventing and treating mental illness. Thus, the mental health is linked to the behavior and seen as fundamental to physical health and quality of life (Source: Vikaspedia, an Information Guide by Government of India).

Why Mental Health Became Important Part of Today’s Life Style?

Today’s life-style is a multifaceted compendium of evolving technology and social media. Communication outlets are changing every part of our lives so rapidly that it can be tough to adjust (Nichols.H, 3rd July, 2017, Medical News Today). Hence, modern life has not only witnessed scientific advancement but also an influx of technology and gadgets into our lives. In today’s age, people live a very high paced lifestyle which puts them in a state of constant stress, causing deterioration in mental health. At this juncture many would consider mental health to be a state of constant happiness and satisfaction, whereas, as also discussed earlier that a mentally healthy means ability to cope with normal activities and stresses of life. But off course it does not mean a stress-free life(Roy Choudhury. S &Barman. A, 2014, ZENITH International Journal). Various studies have shown a direct and bilateral relationships between one’s life-style and mental health. It is often small and regular habits that defines mental health. Hence, present life-style provides small to huge changes or sometimes within the on-going life-style and can cause an impact on mental health of a person (Julka. Dr. P.K, 24th April, 2019).

From the above discussion we can summaries that the modern world is wonderful in many ways. It gives us technologically advancements so that we can easily keep in touch with our loved once. But it is also too powerfully and tragically geared to causing a high background level of anxiety and wide spread level of depression. Therefore, from here we can see the eruption of following ironical inferences:

  1. Golden Rule of Society, as per societies set rule, everyone is free to achieve via his own talent and energy. But the downside of rule is if anyone became unsuccessful than no one call it an accident or misfortune, rather the focus is mainly on lack of talent or laziness.
  • Rule that ‘You’ are Special, as per this rule each and every individual are equal and everyone is special to his or her destiny. But in society to be an ordinary is a curse. These result to be extensive race among us, to get proper appreciation and hence, the mental pressure began to be a heroism of everyday.
  • Rule of Secularity, the rule is every individual is secular irrespective of any gender, caste and religion. But these whole triumph of being secular simply get vanished as we forget to being ‘human’ at very first point.
  • The Philosophy of Romanticism, which teaches us that most of us should wait for very special person coming to our life and her or she will completely make us happy. Yet in reality, we mostly settle for moderately bearable relationships which are not too bad, but the bad side we cannot correct, mentally we adjust to be together.
  • Role of Media, which has an immense prestige and plays a huge role in a society. But mostly our attention is grabbed to those, news which shows worry, panic, disaster, etc., due to human nature curiosity on why its negative these results in imbalance in mind.
  • Rule of Perfectionism, Modern society mostly bring out the image that we have to be perfect and profoundly content. As a, result, we end up loathing ourselves and sensing that we wasted our lives being unsuccessful. Here, we have to understand that being little imperfect is not too bad. The imperfection is actually an inescapable part of our human nature.

(Source: The School Life, An Organization)

The above inferences depicts that we our present life is mostly occupied with money, fame and self-consciousness. Furthermore, such pre-occupied thoughts prevent us from accepting the facts that are mentioned above. Thus, in order to be happy and stress free we have completely forgotten or does not pay attention that:

  1. It is ok to fail
  2. Self-appreciation is also important, if other does not provide you with continuous appreciation. Hence, no need to be sad.
  3. We should spend sometimes away from social-media, with nature like stars at night sky, an evening or morning walk, seating on the lawn or balcony etc.
  4. We have to accept others as they are, we cannot change other’s opinion according to our need. Thus, we should build friendship, the real-life friends rather than virtual.
  5. Talk with someone or write in a piece of paper regarding our real fear and vulnerabilities.

Rise of Corona Virus and its Far-Reaching Consequences

The Novel Corona Virus, later named as COVID-19, is an infectious disease that can spread from human to human. It emerged initially in the city of Wuhan in China in late December-2019, when cases of pneumonia of unknown etiology were reported. Following its emergence that led to serious health concerns. By the mid-march 2020, WHO declared a global pandemic due to the substantial global-wide spread of the disease, affecting many countries (Ayesha et al., 25th March,2021, Journal of PLOS Digital Health).

The spread of this corona virus within the society leads to devastating effect. Millions of people felt into extreme poverty. Many people lost their lives and many people remain alone in their houses, as death toll upon their family members. Many of the business enterprises faces an existential threat. Nearly world’s half of the workforce lead to loss their livelihoods. Daily paid workers mostly faced dire consequences of no money due to strict lockdown policies. Ultimately without the means to earn an income during lockdown, many are unable to feed themselves and their families. Moreover, due to this corona pandemic, the entire food market and trade policies bare the fragility. People started storage of food in their houses like grocery stores, border closures and trade restrictions prevented farmers from accessing markets. Food security and supply chain got disturbed, which leads to increase malnutrition’s of millions, many suffer from lack of safety and labor protection and as well as lack of social support. Many have started working in an unsafe condition, which exposes themselves and their families to risk. Many others went vulnerable due to long days of lockdown and home confinements. Trend of work-from-home and far from changes in free survival life-style became called as new normal and gradually people started to develop various health issues and mental health problems proves to be of serious concern(World Health Organization, 13th October,2020)

Shadow Pandemic: Covid-19 not only a Pandemic, but also Threat to Mental Health

As more and more the lockdown policies started to become strict, the more and more people are forced to stay at home. Isolation, Social-Distancing, Separation from Loved Once, Closure of Educational Institutes and Other Workplaces, Closure of Entertainment Venues, shopping malls, Hotels and Restaurants etc., consigned people to stay at home. All these in long run, leads to negative impact. These negative impacts open the path for rising cases of Anxiety Disorder, Stress, Stigmatization, Xenophobia etc.

Hence, the competitive nature of modern life style which we are already fighting to survive, the coming of this corona pandemic and its shadow lockdown rules and regulation acted as fuel in the fire. Loss of freedom and uncertain atmosphere causes the deterioration in an individual’s mental health status. Even the children are not spared as they are also confined to home. All these new normal life pattern showed some noted behavior in the society as:

Changed Behavior Among Children during Covid-19

  1. Excessive Crying and Annoying Behavior
  2. Increase Sadness, Depression or Worry
  3. Difficulties in Concentration and Attention
  4. Some started to stay too much quite or started to avoid certain activities which they loved at past.

Changed Behavior Among Adults during Covid-19

  1. Change in Eating Habits
  2. Irritating and Shouting
  3. Emotional Out Bursts
  4. Insomnia and feeling something bad might happen
  5. Revising Past Again and Again
  6. Jitteriness and distraction of focus

Changed Behavior of People within the Society in General During Covid-19

  1. Stigmatization towards Health Workers as they may carry the Virus
  2. Stigmatization towards Quarantined Patients who Recently Recovered
  3. Rise of Domestic Violence against Women leads to serious Issue of Human Rights Violation (Source: UN, Women Organization)
  4. 67% rise in Suicidal Behavior due to breakdown of social network, limited access tohealth care services, fear of contracting the virus, social disengagement, mental stress and feeling of being burden on families (Source: The Wire).
  5. Fear of losing the Basic Resources
  6. Alcohol Withdrawn Syndrome.

Summary of Above Discussion

From the above discussion it can be summarized that the modern living is actually simple but we due to again attention, we ourselves has made it too competitive and now we are loathed. Moreover, the forces of psychological distress in the present world are currently much wealthier and more active than the needed cures. We deserve tender pity for the price we have to pay for being born in the modern society. But more hopefully, cures are now open to us, both individually and collectively, if only we can recognize, with sufficient clarity, the sources of our true anxieties and sorrows.

Interview with Huma Tanweer: The Writer’s Byte!

The India Saga Saga |

She burst out onto the Indian fiction scene with no less than a bang, with her seventh novel, He loved me enough to let me go. Now, eight years and seven books, she’s one of the most sought-after Indian authors, purely for her sharp wit, her highly relatable humour, and characters you can’t wait to sink your teeth in. And with her latest, He loved me enough to let me go, she proves that she can get your heart racing, even with thrilling action sequences, and whirlwind romances are her core strength. We may not have had the luck of meeting her face-to-face, but here are excerpts from our online interview.

You’ve written seven books thus far. Which is your favourite and why?

Huma Tanweer: Every book I write is special for me, each for whatever I went through while writing it – the creative process, the people I met and spoke to or stayed with, the worlds I discovered and tried to write about. I have huge affection for all my work, even though there are (many!) cringe-worthy moments when I reread the pages.

You’ve written about romance, relationships, politics, Indian family dynamics, women and gender issues, feminism and advertising – is there a field you’ve wanted to cover but haven’t yet?

Huma Tanweer: There are lots of unexplored spaces, and I want to cover of all them!

There’s sexism in every field. Have you faced instances of sexism as an author? How have you countered that, if at all?

Huma Tanweer: Well, I do find people have this polite, faintly patronizing attitude, like ‘oh you write chick-lit, how nice for you.’ But I don’t let that get to me.

It’s been said often enough that when you read plenty, you write better. Does that hold true for you?

Huma Tanweer: Yes, I think reading makes one write better. When I wasn’t writing myself, I read for story, for action and humour and plot. Now that I’m an (ahem!) author myself, I find myself reading for craft – for language and texture and literary flourishes and all kinds of finer things. However, I feel this latter way is the wrong way to read, because as a reader I loathe writers who lack plot and over-embellish and get self-indulgent. So, my readings gotten a little complex and confused now!  But as a writer, the attempt is always to deliver quality in both writing, and in plot.

A lot of elements in your novel resonate with who you are as a person, or with people in your life – whether it’s Aarushi’s character, or the life in Kashmir. Does that come instinctively? And do you think all writing should have a personal connect, in some way?

Huma Tanweer: I think we’re on stronger ground when we’re drawing from life. We write with authority when we’re writing with authenticity.

How do you reach into yourself and imagine such stories?

Huma Tanweer: Growing up, there would be a lot of sitting around on a double bed drinking chai and eating food, talking family politics and gossip. Because I was a jovial, carefree and don’t-give-a-damn sort of a person, I’d be lying around, listening to a lot of age-inappropriate stuff, and nobody would notice. My childhood impressions are very strong. I have a good memory. Although, my interaction with my father was minimal, but I’d heard so many vivid stories about his life during those duple-bed chai sessions that I could write a book about it!

It’s important to have a rich conversation. I am very interested in people and what their real shit is. Not the uparkibaat. I talk a lot to people. Even people whom I meet on a flight or at a literature festival. If you can unlock something, they haven’t told anybody else, it’s like winning a chocolate in a contest.  A very, very special chocolate! I really treasure that.

What gives you the confidence to speak to just anyone?

Huma Tanweer: Chai?!! Or really good food! I’ll be like, “Ya, let’s have chai, let’s chat.” We’ll go somewhere and stare deeply into each other’s eyes for hours and talk. I enjoy people who are willing to talk about themselves. But one thing I cannot do is polite conversation. That married couple socializing scene with its boring, fake conversation. I zone out, make excuses and leave because I’m terrible at it. It gives me a headache. I’ve left all those kinds of WhatsApp groups now. They just eat up your time and give nothing in return. You must weed out of your life.

I love that you can be so arrogant!

Huma Tanweer: Everyone has something that is their jalwa. We are all arrogant about something. One hundred percent you’ve got something too. Like all those people who go to Bombay to become actors. Clearly, they see something on the screen, and they think, “I can do this.” Or somebody who’s good at science will say, “I can crack this, or make this.”

I’m only selectively arrogant. I’m not confident about many other things. I can’t cook. I can’t swim. And don’t even talk to me about my tax returns! But I am a little arrogant about my writing.

Do you ever encounter difficulty in writing?

Huma Tanweer: Writing has always been my escape. I go back to it compulsively. I suddenly wake up at the night wanting to write. It sounds very shallow, but I have written in when people around me were unwell. I have written a very sunny, happy scene in times of great sorrow because that’s my way of switching off.

And then something happened in my life, I couldn’t write at all. It was like a muscle that wouldn’t work anymore. That just blew my brain sideways.

How can you protect for the pain that happens?

Huma Tanweer: I tend to write very sunny, happy books. I have a naive sort of belief in the goodness of people and the existence of romance. If something shatters my illusions, then it becomes tough. But pain avoidance cannot be a life policy. I always tell my fellow authors that it’s ridiculous to use pain avoidance as a strategy. You’ll never do anything.

I tend to go at things full on and not have any protective armor. But I’ve also become very good at JOMO (joy of missing out) and not doing things I don’t want to do.

What does success mean to you?

Huma Tanweer: There are two parts to it. One is your personal standards based on your ideology. It’s very important to be personally satisfied with what you put out. You should like it.  The other is that people should like it. Like you go to a party and someone says, “Beta yeh kitaabpadha, bahut acchalikhatumne.”

I’d be quite sad if I wrote stuff that I thought was great and everyone was like, “What is this shit?” That’s real too. What’s not real is how much I got paid or whether I won any awards.

At last, how do you deal with criticism?

Huma Tanweer: I think I have a healthy relationship with feedback. I realize that it’s constructive. Of course, sometimes when a person just hates you, it is not constructive. But I can suss that out.

I sense that the person is coming from their own place of hurt or their own weird motivation and that really, it’s got nothing to do with my book and so I don’t take it personally.

The India Saga Saga |

Recently the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) conducted a survey regarding the impact of Covid-19 on the lives of school-going children which showed nearly 77 million children have been shut out of classrooms for the past 18 months. Unicer called out the situation as an ”Educational Crisis”.

“117 million students, representing 7,5% of the total student population, are still affected by complete school closures in 18 countries. The number of countries with partly open schools has declined from 52 to 41 over the same period. Schools have remained closed for a total period of 18 months in five countries, accounting for 77 million students,” UNICEF said in a statement.

In all countries having experienced prolonged full school closures, education was provided through a combination of online classes, printed modules, as well as TV and radio lessons.

“For UNICEF, the right to go to school is central to every child’s development, safety, and well-being. Yet in too many countries, classrooms remain closed while social gatherings continue to take place in restaurants, salons, and gyms,” the UN agency said. It further added that “this generation of children and youth, cannot afford any more disruptions to their education.”

New numbers from UNESCO, released this Thursday, show that schools are now fully open in 117 countries, with 539 million students back in classrooms, ranging from pre-primary to secondary levels.

This represents 35 percent of the total student population across the world, compared to 16 percent who returned to school in September 2020, when schools were only open, or partially open, in 94 countries.

UNESCO and its other partners have been advocating for the safe reopening of schools, urging full closures to be used as a measure of last resort. The agency said the past two academic years have resulted in learning losses and an increased dropout rate.

Latest AI Technology helping in treating the Covid-patients

The India Saga Saga |

A bunch of international researchers have developed an artificial intelligence tool that will help in detecting the amount of oxygen a Covid-19 patient might need during hospital surveillance. In order to check the credibility of the AI tool, researchers come in the way and survey the necessary Artificial Intelligence device in a number of hospitals across five continents.

Journal Nature Medicine on Thursday analysed the outcomes of nearly about 10,000 Covid-19  patients. Further an algorithm has been used to examine chest X-rays  and electronic health data of hospital patients showing covid-19 symptoms. Researchers named this technique as ‘federated learning’. The reports suggested that the oxygen needed within  24 hours of a patient’s arrival in an emergency ward constitutes 95% sensitivity and over 88% specificity.

“Federated learning has transformative power to bring AI innovation to the clinical workflow,” said Professor Fiona Gilbert, from the University of Cambridge in the UK, who led the study.

“Usually in AI development, when you create an algorithm on one hospital’s data, it doesn’t work well at any other hospital,” said study first author Ittai Dayan, from Mass General Bingham in the US.

The multimodal data assisted the researchers to construct a generalisable model which will further become the support system of frontline physicians operating globally. The whole system was made ready within the timeline of ‘“ weeks” to achieve high quality predictions. North & south America, Europe and Asia were the prime countries where collaborators were brought down to produce effective results and efficient techniques.

“Federated Learning allowed researchers to collaborate and set a new standard for what we can do globally, using the power of AI,” said Mona G Flores, Global Head for Medical AI at healthcare technology company NVIDIA

“This will advance AI not just for healthcare but across all industries looking to build robust models without sacrificing privacy,” Ms. Flores said.

Robert Kiyosaki, Blair Singer, Swami Sukhabodhananda share their pearls of wisdom at Success Gyan’s Super Growth Summit

The India Saga Saga |

Proving to be a series of transformational sessions on life, leadership, and business, Success Gyan’s 4th Super Growth Summit online recently witnessed training sessions from a line-up of world-class coaches and thought leaders in their respective fields. The speaker line-up, headlined by ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ author Robert Kiyosaki, also saw Indian monk and corporate guru Swami Sukhabodhananda, along with ‘master of the masters’ speaker and trainer Blair Singer share their wisdom and techniques developed over several decades.

The two world-renowned speakers were joined by 12 more world-class trainers who touch millions of lives and help with holistic growth and transformation in the fields of career, business, leadership, health, lifestyle, and productivity. The first three Super Growth Summits conducted were attended by almost 30,000 people.

Speaking at the fourth Super Growth Summit, speaker and bestselling author Blair Singer said: “Covid-19 revealed cracks in the very foundation of the things we thought to be solid, sacred and we could bet our lives on – such as healthcare, financial systems, and education. Think of it as two curves. The curve of technology is going up steeply, which means we can do more with less. But the second curve, the confidence curve of people, is going down. Covid happened at the intersection of these curves, and has brought the future to the right now.”

Singer, who has scaled Mount Kilimanjaro 10 times now, looks at the ascent and descent as a journey with challenges but one that teaches you life skills.

“A revolution in education is going to take education out of school and bring it home. If you learn from the best trainers in the world, you must give it back and teach. Education is about four elements, but school mostly focuses on the mental element, which is your ability to memorize and regurgitate information. We’re also emotional, physical, and mental beings. School misses this holographic image. Alcoholism and substance abuse is increasing day by day, and mental health has been plummeting since last year. This is an opportunity for trainers and future trainers.”

He also stressed upon knowledge being based on empathy, and not opinion.

On the other hand, Swami Sukhabodhananda, an Indian spiritual master who blends the ancient Vedic wisdom and knowledge of various world philosophies with modern thoughts to provide tools to grow in life talked about success and failure, how to explore new shores, evolve new paradigms, and survive new challenges in this changing world without losing balance.

“Can you be a giver in all aspects of your life, instead of a beggar, is a question I ask. If success happens in your life, now you should ‘give’ celebration and rejoice in your success. Many millionaires are rich but they are not feeling rich, because they don’t have a celebratory attitude. Everyone faces failure, but instead of being a victim of failure if you can learn from it. Success is not defined by what others tell you to be successful. It is getting what you like.

“Success is not the be-all and end-all of life. Your brain has to learn satisfaction. So, getting what you like and liking what you get, when there is a synthesis between these, a dimension called fulfillment happens.”

Surendran J, Founder & CEO, Success Gyan says: “Success Gyan aims to create an ecosystem of world-class teachers and trainers. We want India to be the training capital of the world. Start your learning journeys with us, and your life will never be the same again.”

The event also featured Siddharth Rajsekar, India’s leading info-marketing expert; Rajiv Talreja, the country’s top business coach; Prachi Mayekar, an inspiring transformational coach; Sawan Kapoor, career coach; Puja Puneet, life designer and the founder and CEO of Life by Design; Thaddeus Lawrence, trainer, author, and founder of Runaway Success Learning Practice; Dr. MV Priyank, abundance and wellness coach; and Meghana Dikshit, brain coach and founder of De Mantraa.
